Great job! I am so glad you found a system that is working for you, and keeping

you from feeling hungry! Nice too that you are pacing yourself, so you don't

get frustrated. Store bought rice or almond milk is " ok " ...but just ok-it has

fillers and things you could avoid by making your own, which is much easier than

you might think, but store bought is certainly a MUCH better option than

commercial milk (for OH, so many reasons). I make homemade sunflower seed milk

daily-it is creamy and delicious, and ANY milk that you make in the Vitamix is

not only healthier, but wayyy cheaper :) As for nutritional yeast-VERY good

stuff, full of B vitamins, and not at all related to brewers yeast, which I

agree is just plain nasty, lol. Nutritional yeast has a naturally cheese flavor

and can easily take the place of cheese in sauces, soups, baking, etc. I use

NOW brand, which comes in a canister at the health food store-very versatile

stuff. Keep up the good work! Looks like you are off to a great start!

Hey, thanks for blogging your experience! You mentioned you were

tired. Have you calculated how much protein you are getting in a

day? It's pretty important for feeling energetic. I know, as I've

been vegetarian for 30 years, 9 of them vegan. I know I need to get

ample protein to feel good. I think the recommended protein for most

women is 49 grams per day, and for most men it's around 56 grams per

day. You can calculate your protein amount per day using any of the

tables available on the Internet for the foods and amounts you eat in a day.

Sure, happy to share! I just rinse and soak my raw sunflower seeds over night,

then drain them well (the rinsing makes for a clearer milk, since there is a lot

of dusty particles on the seeds-I grow my own sunflowers and save the seeds, so

I don't know if commercial ones are as dusty-mine are from the way I harvest

them from the head of the flower) In the morning, I just rinse them well, throw

them in the Vitamix and buzz them up with some good spring water and a pinch of

sea salt-I don't measure, but I am guessing about twice the volume of spring

water to the amount of seeds, more or less to your desired consistency. I will

pay attention tomorrow to see what the ratio is of water to seed. I used to add

a squirt of agave nectar to sweeten it a bit, and a touch of sunflower seed oil

for the mouthfeel, but now I just do seeds and water. It makes a sort of beige

colored milk-not pretty, but right tasty! Sunflower seeds also make a wonderful

pudding texture when chilled, if you buzz them with just enough water to cover-I

make an amazing chocolate pudding with the pureed seeds, cocoa powder and agave

or honey-yum!

Go back a step, please. How are you shelling all those wonderful seeds

you grow?

Sounds like a big job to me. I can buy organic sunflower at my local

Natural foods store, but growing your own would be fun if not for

shelling all those seeds.

How do you shell all your sunflower seeds?

It makes a sort of beige colored milk-not pretty, but right tasty! Sunflower seeds also make a wonderful pudding texture when chilled, if you buzz them with just enough water to cover-I make an amazing chocolate pudding with the pureed seeds, cocoa powder and agave or honey-yum!> >> > Well, day 1 went great except I was kind of tired. Wow, thanks for the info on nutritional yeast and making milks. I have a LOT of brown rice in my pantry so maybe I’ll start with that. Willing to give it a try anyway. I weighed myself this morning and I’ve lost 4 pounds in two days. Weight loss is a secondary goal of this challenge…more of a kick-start. The main thing is to shift to a healthier, more fit way of eating and to conquer some pesky food and environmental allergies. I’m amazed that after only 48 hours I’m producing way less mucus and some hives I’ve had on my tummy have disappeared. Keeping a diary of all the things I’m feeling and noticing as well as what I’m eating each day. Pretty easy to keep track of when it’s all fruits and veggies pretty much!

Thanks for all the info on making milks and the link. I’m going to try one today (brown rice) and see how it goes. I’ll let you know. And thanks, too, for all the encouragement. I will check in here with a progress report every couple of days then. One interesting thing I’ve noticed: I’ve always awakened in the morning very hungry and have eaten breakfast right away. Now I am not hungry in the morning until much later. I have a cup of hot lemon water and don’t make my first smoothie until well into the morning. Just noticing a major change…
