Guest guest
Thanks, Velda for looking that up. The guy who gave me the grains sees whey as a " by-product " so he throws it out. Not exactly sure why it seems bad (or perhaps just inferior) to him. I am going to try shaking up my current batch and see what I think. It would sure be nice to have a quart or so of kefir instead of just a couple cups (if that). RenaIf God brings you to it, He will bring you through it.Happy moments, praise God. Guest guest
Rena, My Kefir smoothie routine is this:In my VM I throw a handful of frozen berries of choice (sometimes I also add a handful of fresh baby spinach),Add jar of finished kefir (including whey): smooth/chunky/separated,doesn't matter.I add a few drops of NuNaturals alcohol free Vanilla Stevia if needed to my own desired sweetness, give it a short whirl in the VM.Then I usually slow the blender down and add about 1/2 teaspoon or so of Konjac Glucomannan (sometimes chia) as a thickener and to keep me feeling fuller longer. Drop it right down the vortex (keeps it from getting so much on the sides of the jar). If I'm wanting a pudding for dessert, I add more Konjac. (Cocoa powder or nibs and some expresso coffee powder makes a great pudding when you are ready for more expiramentation.)Lately I have been adding a little vanilla almond milk; changes up the flavor a bit and is also really yummy. Guest guest
Thanks Carol for those suggestions. Do you soak your chia, or grind them before you add them to the smoothie. I have been adding just about a cup, maybe 2 (I don't measure) to a blender full of ingredients. My family isn't quite on board with the kefir so I don't want the flavor overwhelmed with it and yet still give them some of the benefits. I haven't had breakfast yet - I think I'll go make some right now!Rena If God brings you to it, He will bring you through it.Happy moments, praise God. Difficult moments, seek God. Guest guest
I would like to say I soak my chia, but I'm not usually that organized so I just chuck them into the container, as is! I don't notice all that much flavor difference with chia. I have one grand daughter who won't try the kefir, and one who will drink/eat as much as I give her. Try starting your family with the almond milk trick. Also fresh strawberries seem to add the best, fruit off the vine taste!! Guest guest
Hi Carol,Good suggestions. Thanks! I usually soak a batch of chia and keep it in the refrig to use when ever I want to add them to my smoothie. RenaIf God brings you to it, He will bring you through it.Happy moments, praise God. Guest guest
That is amusing he thinks of it as a by product to be tossed. Has he not noticed how popular whey powders are these days with fitness buffs? I would stir or shake it back in, as I do with yogurt. Guest guest
When I first read this, I thought you meant a cup of chia seeds! Now that would be a thick mixture! Guest guest
Well, that's kinda his point. Now that somebody has figured out a way to make money off it they dehydrate it and sell it as a supplement. I guess he doesn't feel like it has that many benefits. BTW - I am pretty disappointed in the kefir I have been making. It is not smooth and creamy at all. Whether I shake back in the whey or siphon it off, it is clumpy and feels more like drinking curdled milk. Am I using it too soon? Does it need to sit in the refrig longer to thicken up? The last few batches I have made have been over half whey. The one I did last night (which is still on the kitchen counter) at this point hasn't separated at all (and usually it starts separating right away). What are the benefit differences between kefir and yogurt? I have been thinking about buying some starts that will process on the counter without preheating the milk. I don't necessarily want to do both and wondered which is best (if there is such a thing). TIA!RenaIf God brings you to it, He will bring you through it. Happy moments, praise God.
