Guest guest
Janet, I don't know if this would help your daughter at all, but some autistic kids who have problems with sounds like the ones you describe have found at least some relief with auditory integration therapy (AIT). I have always wondered if it would work for similar oversensitivity in people with OCD - my daughter has also suffered with this symptom, especially when it comes to chewing sounds or other things that she interprets as " disgusting. " Her reaction is like what I would have from someone running their nails across a chalkboard - I suspect you know _just_ what I mean. I think some info should be available at http://www.autism.com. You might ask someone at the Center about AIT also. I know a mom from near KC whose son (Tourette's, OCD, possible Asperger's) did really well with services from there until just recently. I think he is 16 now. I met him this summer - delightful kid, obsessed with weather and wrestling <grin>, very smart and funny as Touretters tend to be. You might ask if your therapist at JC would put you in touch with Diane Bonner, his mom - she works with the Kansas chapter of TSA and makes herself available to other parents in need of advice. PS about residential - a parent I know here (Oregon) is trying to get their son into a residential program in Kansas called, I think, Heartsprings. It is supposed to have real expertise in working with kids who have neurological disorders (their son has Asperger's syndrome and OCD). Might be something else worth asking about if residential is an option you need to pursue. I don't know anything more about it than what I've heard from them. This is something your school district should pay for if they agree that she needs residential care.
