Guest guest
Shirley, I'm not Lea Ann, but I do freeze fruit. Among my favorites for the VM are: peaches (pitted and cut up) cherries (pitted first, mainly in mid summer when they are so wonderful) watermelon (cut up) also other melons in summer I buy Mangoes, mixed berries, strawberries, peaches any any other mixtures Costco comes up with, in reclosable bags at Costco. I don't freeze bananas, because I am allergic to them, but you certainly can, peeled first as they are a royal pain to peel once frozen. I don't freeze apples or grapes (although I have frozen grapes in summer, I prefer them fresh). My question may be answered on your pages someplace, but I am not sure quite how to get the info I am looking for yet. I am wondering what fruits I can freeze to use in Smoothies. Sometimes we have a great sale on grapes, pears, and other things that we have a lot of at 1 time. Some seasonal fruits will be around later as well. What can I safely freeze to have on hand. I know I can buy a lot of frozen fruit but hope to prepare my own when I can. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated! Guest guest
Gosh, I freeze most any fruit. Right now I am freezing chunks of apples for ice cream. The only thing I do I squeeze a little lemon juice on them. In summer I freeze berries when they are plentiful. Peaches and plums. I take the pits out first. Bananas, of course but not because I can't get them year but I always have a few that are eating too ripe to eat out of hand. I've even frozen grapes. I love snacking on frozen grapes. I'll be curious if there is a fruit you can't freeze.Sent from my iPadHDOn Apr 14, 2012, at 9:24 PM, Shirley <jallen03@...> wrote: Dear Lea Ann…I am waiting (im)patiently for my brand new VitaMix. Guest guest
If you find certain mixtures you like, and are buying fresh, I like to freeze on a piece of parchment on a cookie sheet, then put together mixtures and amounts I like and put i ziplock baggies to dump into smoothies. I like carrots too (use them fresh) esp the organic one's as they are so sweet. Unlike some others, I almost always add a cup or so of filtered water to my frozen mixture and unfrozen ingredients, as it helps me get it spinning. I dilute to the consistency I like. I also like putting a spoonful of flax seed (whole) in and the VM grinds them along with the other ingredients. One thing I hear consistently when people start, is, not running long enough to grind stuff like flax and firmer fruits and veggies. Don't be afraid, as you won't break the VM. Add ice or frozen fruit as needed to keep it cool, if you need to run to smooth out chunky stuff. Velda On 4/14/2012 7:47 PM, Shirley wrote: Thank you! Guest guest
Hello Shirley,Sorry for my late reply, but I see there are a lot of great answers already! As everyone mentioned, just about any fruit can be frozen:http://wiki.answers.com/Q/Can_you_freeze_fruitAnd as Velda recommended, I like to "flash freeze" the things that might stick together. Here is a past thread kind of related to this topic:/message/22024Be sure to read the follow up comments to mine additional gems of useful information! Guest guest
Yes, the VM allows me to save all those fruits that have become too ripe and I used to throw out. When they are nearing the end of their fridge or counter life, I chop them up and put them in the freezer for use in the VM. Right now I have a bunch of pears that need to go into the freezer. Also, I hate eating an apple with a mushy consistency. If I get an apple that I don't like the texture of, I quarter it and throw it into the freezer for my VM use. Then I get another apple cut up to enjoy raw. I recently found a bag a pineapple in the freezer that had gotten lost in the depths. It must have been in there a long time as I had a bag of frozen, recently cut up pineapple that I've been using. Anyway, I did toss it because it looked less than appetizing. So my advice on pineapple is to use it within a few months.
