Association Develops National Network of Neuropathy Centers

The Neuropathy Association has established “Neuropathy Centers” at and

in affiliation with four of the nation’s most prestigious university medical

centers: The University of California at San Francisco, Cornell University in

New York, The University of Florida at ville and the University of

Michigan.

The Centers are the first in what is expected to become a national

network of centers affiliated with the Association. Their purpose is to:

Encourage and organize and patient support activities Educate

physicians to better evaluate and treat patients Partner with key health care

thought leaders.

Raise general neuropathy awareness at grassroots level Support

research into the causes and treatment of neuropathy Access institutional

resources to help fight the disease Neuropathy afflicts 10-20 million Americans,

yet most people have never heard of it. Too often, this illness is discovered

after it has already done irreparable harm. Education, care and research are our

frontline defenses against this " stealth " disorder. We believe these should

begin at and extend from our nation's leading medical institutions, which are

the nerve centers of medical opinion and policy.

With nearly 100,000 members and 245 support groups and affiliates,

The Neuropathy Association will serve as a vital two-way communications link

between these centers and patients. Each center will be managed by a Director

appointed by the host institution, and its day-to-day activities will be

conducted by a Nurse Coordinator who will work closely with The Neuropathy

Association. The Association will provide “seed grants” over three years to help

the centers get established and to become self-sustaining within that period.

Funding for the UC-SF Center was provided by friends and family of

the late S Loeb of Sparks, NV. The Center at Cornell is funded by Bayer

Healthcare LLC and the other two centers are funded by a friend of the

Association who prefers to remain anonymous.

I can't believe this. My daughter is graduating from The University of

Florida on August 5th! What are the odds out of all the schools in the

country, she's going to this one. I'm so excited I haven't even read the whole

article yet. I already e-mailed her. I'll let you know what comes of this,

(I'm going to call myself spoolie julie in the future, since there are

two of us, if anyone cares...The other , " hi " , seems to know more

than I do).

take care,

spoolie ( in Key West)
