Guest guest
CONGRATULATIONS !!!! Wonderful to hear these accomplishments and achievements, helps those of us just starting out on this journey have hope and strength for our own children. ~ Pruden From: cindytens <cindten@...>Subject: ( ) Good News!!! Date: Saturday, May 29, 2010, 3:04 PM My 19 year old AS son just got his California Driver's License!!!The best thing I ever did was take him out of school, away from "The Experts and Professionals" and the horrible middle schoolers. Took him off all meds and just let him be for a year. I would take him everywhere with me. Made him talk to clerks and pay for things himself. I told him that in College I was a sign language interpreter and now I was here to be his interpreter. Then we started an intensive Homeschool DVD program. He started growing up and going to a Youth group at church. He just finished his 2nd semester at Community College and has friends and an active social life. I NEVER thought this would happen. During the dark days I wanted to die. He has always been the kindest, sweet, gentle person and I think that's what was the saddest thing. He is gorgeous and the girls love him!! He said to me, "It's a good thing I'm a good guy or I could really have a lot of girlfriends at one time." But like Pavlov's dog I still react if something seems wrong. The 10 mins waiting for him to do his driving test was like reliving all the phone calls and problems at once. I told the examiner, "The next 10 mins could change my life." I am so proud of him and just wanted to share some good news!!!
Guest guest
So great to hear!!! Your son sounds like mine. He's starting high school in the fall and it scares me, but I don't think it can be as bad as some of the kids he had to deal with in middle school. Guest guest
Congratulations to you and your son. That is wonderful. My own son is 20 and in college (lives at home). We have gotten him through making transactions himself and similar things, but, he still has trouble developing close friendships. I am hoping he can move to that next stage. Thanks for the encouragement and I am happy for you!On Sat, May 29, 2010 at 5:04 PM, cindytens <cindten@...> wrote: My 19 year old AS son just got his California Driver's License!!! Guest guest
Congratulations to your son! And to you! My son, 21, has his license but hasn't had any practice on major highways (our city is small, more rural county). Has your son driven on them much, done well on them? > > My 19 year old AS son just got his California Driver's License!!! > > The best thing I ever did was take him out of school, away from " The Experts and Professionals " and the horrible middle schoolers. Guest guest
– This question was not directed to me but I will shed my experience with my son. He turned 20 last week and has had his driver’s license since he was 17½. We live in a Houston which is a huge city (over 6 million) – actually live in a suburb but in Houston they all just run together. LOL. Anyway, he does drive on busy roads and some major highways. But, there are highways, toll roads, and even sections of the highways he does drive on that we don’t allow him on. For example, my husband (Tyler’s step-dad) and I just moved about 60 miles away and one of the interstates that leads to our new home is very busy, has miles of major construction going on with no shoulders, and the traffic moves very fast. So, we have him come an alternate way when he comes to visit. It is still a four-lane highway but it goes through small towns with traffic lights so the traffic doesn’t move as fast and it is definitely less crowded than the interstate. While he has had a couple of wrecks he is for the most part a very safe and conscientious driver. From: [mailto: ] On Behalf Of Chris Sent: Sunday, May 30, 2010 4:18 PM Subject: ( ) Re: Good News!!! Guest guest
Hey We live in San Diego and my son has driven on the freeway many times, never with me in the car. lol It isn't easy to get around without going on the freeway. We have found alternate routes but then his older friend who is a Marine took him driving many times and they went on the freeway. He did fine and I think it's great that he has that confidence to do it. My son explained to me when he first started driving and I was holding on for dear life, that, he plays video games where he has to be aware of his surroundings and process a lot of different things at once. I have played some of these games with him and realized that he can process information coming in from all around him. That helped me settle down a bit. But as a driver of over 35 years I know that the only way to get better is experience on the road....
Guest guest
Thanks , that helps. I'd being doing that " alternate route " too. With , I've noticed that he just does not " take in " everything around him, all you need to be aware of when driving. He's " focused " but too narrowly I guess. Has a lead foot too, but will deny, says he can handle it, he's fine, etc. (Even his twin told him he was taking curves and all too fast, so wasn't just " me " ) Also noticed when at a new intersection or some new place, he can be confused as to what lane or who goes first.... AND he apparently never has paid attention when others drive as to how to get to/from places, places he's been to multiple times, because he has to ask how to go when he drives! Since little, it seems multi-tasking is a weakness, one reason I finally stopped baseball for him at a certain age, soccer was a better sport for him. I didn't let him have his car at college yet. He'll be home in a couple weeks and I'm going to tell him to drive, drive, practice, practice. Hoping he's maybe a bit more mature after a school year away from home and will do better. His twin did tell me that said he wouldn't feel comfortable driving to college & back, so that made me feel better. Yet he once told me he thought he could handle it. Ugh! I don't want to underestimate him, I've learned that, he can surprise me. But I don't want to overestimate his abilities either. But I do feel lots better after your post, thanks!!! > > – This question was not directed to me but I will shed my experience > with my son. Guest guest
Thanks, everyone is making me feel better. Yep, have to get to practice this summer. Now - will I be in the car? Considering what I tend to say on short trips in our town...LOL. Guess I better be with him though. > > > Hey > We live in San Diego and my son has driven on the freeway many times, never with me in the car. lol > It isn't easy to get around without going on the freeway.
