Guest guest
Welcome Adam, Everyone is welcome here. I don't really know too much about Asperger's but I am sure it has been difficult for you growing up with it. This is definitely a friendly and caring environment! I'm and I am 46 with fibromyalgia, asthma, allergies, chronic sinusitis, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, low thyroid, overactive bladder, gerd, insomnia, sleep apnea, depression & anxiety. I think that is most of it. I have 2 kids, my son Nick is 24 and healthy, he works as a pharmacy tech and plans to go on to pharmacy school (he is a college grad). My daughter is 22 and has cystic fibrosis, she was born with it so knows what it is like to grow up "different". She is now in college and wants to be a mechanical engineer. My husband is a mechanical engineer and she has his sort of thinking. Anyway, glad to have you! I have a friend Bree with fibro and some other issues who may be joining us soon. Just a heads up! love,

Guest guest
Welcome ! I'm with all sorts of problems, fibromyalgia being #1 I guess, I am also fighting a bad sinus infection. I have 2 kids, Nick is 24 and healthy and is 22 and has cystic fibrosis. Recently I have started to think I may have cf as well and I want to be tested for it. My daughter has a mild form of the disease and a rare mutation and I could have it as well. Well I don't have Peripheral Neuropathy but I did use to take Neurontin--it didn't really help me and I got off it. We all have a hard time making people understand our illnesses especially our own families!! Join the club. love,
Guest guest
Hi , welcome!! I'm a single mom with 3 sons - ages 17 and 21 (twins are 17; not identical). (17) began with his OCD in 6th grade. I *think* that I would see about trying some medication for Tyler for his OCD. His doctor should be able to help with that, as I guess he may need to balance between the Concerta and the OCD medication. Was his ADHD pretty bad before going on medication? Asking, as sometimes you need to treat what is the most " bothersome " which right now would be the OCD/anxiety. The doctor might try Tyler on the same anti- depressant you're on if it works well for you with no side effects and is one that is also prescribed for OCD. It does take higher doses to treat OCD than it does to treat depression/other, dosage just varies per person. You might also ask his doctor if he/she knows of anyone experienced in treating OCD in kids with CBT (cognitive behavioral therapy) and ERP (exposure & response prevention). " Talk " therapy won't help OCD although it can help with other things (like any problems he's having due to family/divorce, school...). We didn't have anyone in our little area to do therapy with and had to manage on our own. So I read & researched, joined this great group which gave lots of support and suggestions to try and we somehow managed to slowly have things turn around for the better! But just this year he began having bad thoughts, scrupulosity/religious OCD issues. So he's dealing with that. In middle school he went through rituals/compulsions. It was like 24- hour OCD. School actually was easier for him than being home, the distractions there at school I guess. But we had to set up a 504 Plan for him (sort of like an IEP) and get accommodations and modifications as his schoolwork/grades really suffered, he couldn't even write hardly or read, etc. Stress can definitely make OCD worse, and the Plan really helped ease some of that for us both (though it was still really hard getting the work done - long story). Anyway, there are definitely depressing times for our kids when suffering with OCD 24/7. 's going through some depression now. His eyes look so sad. He doesn't want to go back on medication right now, but we shall see.... Well I'm glad you are all safe now at your parents!! Divorce is emotional, stressful on everyone. I separated from 's dad when the twins were just 2 months old (my choice). Oh, has a thing about blood/food. So now he won't eat bone- in chicken, just boneless. Chicken's a favorite food of his too. Hope to hear more from you, hang in there! > > Hi. I am a new member, I am , mom to 3 kids ages 15,11,6. I > live in Arizona. Guest guest
Oh my goodness, my heart truly goes out to you. That is a really tough situation and how awful for your son and rest of your family. I hope your psychiatrist can come up with a solution quickly. My thoughts are with you. g_mart1971 <g_mart1971@...> wrote: I am a new member to this group and have found reading everyone's postings very comforting so far. We had to begin him on medication in order for him to be able to begin Kindgergarten at the age of five. Over the years his OCD has been well-controlled by meds with a few ups and downs requiring a slight medication adjustment. However, this summer we've been blindsided. In June he had major reconstructive chest surgery for a birth defect and the surgery went wonderfully and the results were fabulous! However, four weeks after surgery he hit rock bottom with depression and his OCD reared it's very ugly head. The doctors think the stress of the major surgery triggered it. He began have obsessive repulsive sexual thoughts about a good friend of his who once " mooned " him (1 1/2 years ago). He ended the friendship abruptly because of the OCD. He now hates the friend with a passion. Whenever he had these thoughts everything he was wearing was contaminted, everything he touched, anywhere he'd been was contamined. As you can imagine our lives became very restricted. We could no longer go anywhere, the store, church, the YMCA, etc. The past 7 weeks have been spent trying a new medication (Anafranil---he was on Celexa before) and we have seen very little improvement. He has not been able to return to school because his anxiety is thru the roof and he doesn't want to see the friend. We tried taking him to a different school and that didn't work either because he feels anything to do with any school or school work is contaminated. We are extremely frustrated and it has been really hard on our close-knit family. My nine year old daughter doesn't understand what's going on. Guest guest
I live in Medicine Hat, we went to pick up our DD from the airport and I convinced DH to stop in at Fitness Plus and a couple of fabric stores. Jari stresses that you should know how to do the deadlifts with proper form and suggests that you see a trainer to make sure you are doing them right. I don't think I'll go as fast as they do in the workout and I will probably start without weights or go very light. Yes, it will be nice to talk to you here as well as FitFirmies. Guest guest
Welcome to the group. I'm sorry about what you're going thru with your dear daughter. My son is 12 and has had OCD since age 4----usually well controlled with meds. This summer it got out of control again and we just can't seem to get ahead of is this time. We're not sure if puberty triggered it or the fact that he had a major surgery (stressful) in June. It's very important you find the right doc. Keep searching until you find the one that fits. It will make all the difference in the world to your whole family. Best of luck to you, Glenda redolliet <KLThieme@...> wrote: Hi I am a new member to this group. My daughter is 13. Her ocd is not visible to other people becuase it is in the form of negitive thoughts that she can't get rid of. It breaks my heart to watch her suffer. I have started her on natural meds. fish oil, st. s wart etc. I can't find her old counselor so I am searching for one...It is hard. Guest guest
Hi, welcome! I guess puberty is at it again with OCD. We've discussed that here about OCD, does going through puberty make it worse, trigger it, etc. And with girls, add the menstrual cycle! My son, now 17, had OCD begin in 6th grade, he was around 11.5. So, a new school/middle school, new kids, teachers, plus puberty...I always wondered if all this triggered it. But, oh well, OCD was here no matter the cause. My son is also now dealing with bad thoughts, religion/scrupulosity. Back in 6th grade/middle school it was mostly compulsions/rituals, a feeling that something bad would happen to him and a " just right " feeling along with it (had to do something until it felt " right " ). The bad thoughts/scrup began the first of this year. OCD being visible to others - even back when 's was visible to me and his brothers (compulsions, hesitations, avoidance, repeating...) his teachers and I guess others didn't see it all because they just didn't know what it was. 's twin, , was in a lot of his classes back then and he could see 's OCD all the time. Though the actions that were obvious to others probably seemed more like oddness or weirdness (which is how a lot of peers viewed him). Another thought - putting up with the typical teen puberty/hormonal changes and the moods and sometimes " attitude " that comes with it and having OCD thrown in! Hang in there!! I hope you find a therapist soon. You're right, a knowledgeable, experienced one can be hard to find! Have you checked the OCD Foundation website for a list? single mom, 3 sons , 17, with OCD, dysgraphia and Aspergers/autism (mild) > > Hi I am a new member to this group. My daughter is 13. Guest guest
Thank-you for the tip. I will check their web site. My daughter also struggles with religion/scrupulosity. She is now obsessing that she might be gay and of course feeling guilty for thinking that. She dosn't want to hang out with her friends any more becuase she is worried she might think thoughts about them. Religion is a big part of our lives, so I am hoping to learn what I can do or say. Guest guest
My oldest daughter, Hannah, thought she was gay for awhile also. I told her that if she was my feelings for her and about her would not change and that worrying that one might be gay was one of the most common OCD thoughts around. This seemed to alleviate the worry in her mind. I also tell my girls regularly that sexual thoughts are completely normal and that it is the OCD that makes them seem bad. I know that both of them are frequently bothered by sexual thoughts and that they feel very guilty. It sounds like your son is bothered by them too. Have you ever come right out and said that many many people with OCD have sexual thoughts that bother them? My oldest was pretty sure she was the only one! Guest guest
My 12 year old son has also been worrying that he might be gay. He will not hang out with anyone male (except family) because he thinks he might have bad thoughts about them. He has even asked if they can test him for being gay. Alhtough I don't think he has the religious/scrupolosity obsessions, he has told me that he's afraid God thinks he's bad for thinking these things. We told him the same thing you did, God understands OCD and knows the real you. At this point, he won't even watch a show that contains anything as mild as a kiss between a husband and wife. He's pretty much restrincted himself to the Disney channel or any cartoon because he knows there's no chance of something popping up that will trigger bad thoughts. She is now obsessing that she might be gay and of course feeling guilty for thinking that. She dosn't want to hang out with her friends any more becuase she is worried she might think thoughts about them. Religion is a big part of our lives, so I am hoping to learn what I can do or say. Guest guest
Hannah is fifteen and she was diagnosed at eleven. She has been on medication for four years now (Luvox and Abilify) and goes to therapy sessions twice a month. She improved a lot with the medication and has her ups and downs. My other daughter, , is thirteen and she was diagnosed at seven. She too takes meds and goes to therapy. I just take the meds and get what I can out of their therapy! Both girls have the sexual thoughts but Hannah experienced it first. It sounds like you are telling your son the right things--hang in there. Maybe he'll switch to something new soon.
