[ ] Letter to Senator/Representative Hi gang, OK, we're not even close to 50 who've agreed to send a letter but I can't let those down that have agreed so I did write a letter and it's in the " Files " section on the website for the list. It's called " Advocacy Letter for list.doc " . You should be able to download this to your own computer (double click on the file, then " Save as " to your computer). If that doesn't work, open it up and copy and paste to a document on your computer. Here's what you need to do: Find out who your 2 senators and 1 representative are. Find your senators and their addresses using http:// directory.usayfoundation.org/ and find your representative using this link https://forms.house.gov/wyr/welcome.shtml Change the name and address information in the letter, the salutation, and your own name and address on the bottom. Also change anything in the body of the letter that you want. Or elaborate on your own personal story if you like--just try to keep the letter to one page as that's kind of a rule of thumb for these types of letters. Print and sign your letters. Address an envelope for each letter and mail the 3 letters. Let me know that you've sent the letters and I will let the LLS know that you've done this. They would love to know that patients out there are getting involved. If anyone needs help with any of this, please feel free to email me on the list or privately--I'll be happy to help in any way I can. Thanks so much for the help of everyone who is doing this. Believe me it really does make a difference. We are alive because others have fought for funding for research in the past and we really do need to get involved if we want to find a cure. Guest guest
For those of you who don't read online here's the link for the website where you can find the letter: /?yguid=55763903 You might have to sign in if you haven't been there for a while (I hope you remember your password). Look for a link that says Sign In if you aren't logged in. Then over on the left click on the " Files " link. Then you should see the file called " Advocacy letter for the list " . If you can't figure out how to get to the website and the letter--here's what the letter says: 4/14/08 The Honorable Dole United States Senate 555 Dirksen Office Building Washington, DC 20510 Dear Senator Dole: (or Dear Representative xxxx) As a leukemia survivor I strongly urge you to support the public policy initiatives of The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. I was diagnosed with Chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML) and am alive today because of our country’s willingness in the past to invest in basic research at the NIH and NCI. Before 2001 when the drug Gleevec came on the market, my disease was considered “invariably fatal” as it had a very low survival rate. Now the survival rate at 5 years is over 90%. I know first-hand how very important medical research is and I urge you to do everything possible to assure that we will not fall further behind in research funding. The discovery of Gleevec would not have been possible without 40 years of basic research done primarily by labs funded through the NIH and NCI. There remains much work to be done and I am very concerned about the decreased purchasing power of the NIH and NCI since 2003. I ask that you support at least a 6.5% increase in funding for the NIH and a 9.5% increase for the NCI. The negative effects of the decreased purchasing power over the past few years at the NIH and NCI are being felt in various ways. The percentage of successful grant applications has dropped from 1 in 3 to 1 in 4. Many are funded only after prolonged delays and burdensome reapplications. Young researchers are leaving the field. We are losing a whole generation of medical researchers who see no future in medical research. The average age of NIH grantees has risen from 39 to 51 in the last 25 years. Patients in clinical trials in the Community Oncology Program have been reduced by 800 slowing progress toward new treatments. Surely this isn’t good for cancer patients, our biotech industry, or the overall prosperity of our country. We all benefit from medical research when our tax dollars are used to add years to our lives and the lives of our loved ones. Please help stop the decline of medical research. Thank you so much for your support in this area. Your Name Your street address City, State 28037 You could copy and paste from this email or copy and write the letters. I hope this helps.
