I have heard not to take gleevec with coffee but I thought that was a nausea

thing.

[ ] Gleevec and Caffeine

Does anyone know if you can take Gleevec with caffeine? I've read

online that you shouldn't have any form of caffeine and hour before or

an hour after you take the drug. Folks I've spoken to have never heard

of this. I would appreciate any response, as I am trying my best to

reach remission.

The only thing they told me not to eat was grapefruit, or grapefruit juice,

coffee was fine.....

Sheesh! I never heard that. I take my gleevec at night, and I drink a couple of

cups of coffee in the morning. Nausea comes and goes.

I take gleevec (400mg) at lunch immediately followed by a cup of

coffee that I like strong, and I have no problems. But it is true that

coffee is bad if you have nausea, it's a no no before getting into a

boat for people that get sea sick.

Yep they only told me to stay away from grapefruit.

I always drank my coffee in the mornings. Glevic was nasty to me anyway.

It never agreed with me in any way!!! It just did not like me.

The other issue with caffeine is that it can sometimes be a laxative so

if you have a problem with diarreah, caffeine can potentially aggrevate

that.

I drink coffee with some regularity because I find it works great as a

diuretic and I've had no problems....mind you, I don't take it at the

same time as the Gleevec but later on in the day.

I tend to have 'cyclic' symptoms from the Gleevec -- a month or two of nausea,

then of diarrhea, then soreness... I have been on Gleevec since Dec. 03 and

suddenly a couple of months ago I found I was getting instantly sick, as in

vomiting, the minute I had even a small drink of coffee. I was really, really

bummed about that, because I love my coffee. Not a lot, just enough to make me

human in the morning, if you know what I mean. So started drinking tea and that

helped a lot with all the nausea I normally have. Now, a few months later, I

have noticed that I am tolerating coffee again.

Also, I am convinced that the memory thing some folks have been mentioning is

related to Gleevec. Before taking this med, I had a memory of an elephant --

every one knew it. I was already that way as a child. Now, I am often

'missing' whole things that have happened or that I have said or that someone

has told me. Missing as in totally wiped away. This is very upsetting to me,

but I too have begun to write down things and have even go so far as to tell my

sons or a friend or my husband where I am putting something for safe-keeping,

should I later forget when I need to retrieve it.

What a change in life....

C'est la vie...
