Guest guest
Norvasc is a calcium channel blocker. You came close--it's hydrochlorothiazide. Just abbreviate it HCTZ--that is much easier! Glad all went well on your trip. Cool that the drug company picked up your hotel tab. They can well afford to! Tues was labs, all day, ekg, all day, the infusion, barf, more labs, more ekg, then numb tongue. Wed. and Thurs same, labs, ekg, and a Dr. visit, and home. The tongue is seeming to get less numb as the day progresses. > So, it's go back every Thurs. Takes about an hour, a little more. > The nice thing was, the drug company picked up the hotel tab. Wow! that was nice of them. > Now then, on the down side, they had me quit taking Caduet, which is a combination of > Norvasc, for high blood pressure, and Lipitor for cholesterol. And today the U of Mich called , gave me my labs. WBC - 5, HGB - 10.6, PLT - 171, and LDH 289. They said I could not take a channel blocker, is that what Lipitor is? Or is that the Norvasc, anyone know? I 'spect my PCP will call me when he gets those labs faxed to him and have me come in for more labs. Not being on Caduet was OK with me, it's over 200/month, as compared to the hydrochlorathiaside (gee, if I spelled that right I will impress myself!) which is dirt cheap. Guest guest
Hi Bobby, It's so valuable to have your experiences so thanks so much for sharing them. It reminds me of when people started taking Gleevec for the first time, we couldn't get enough of the personal stories. The Norvasc is the calcium channel blocker and the Lipitor is a statin. Here's a good site that discuses calcium channel blockers and how they work if you're interested: http://www.medterms.com/script/main/art.asp?articlekey=26009 I don't know for sure but my guess is that if the cholesterol wasn't done while fasting for at least 12 hours, then it's not very reliable. Please keep us updated on any news you hear from Lottie. Guest guest
Hi Bobby, I don't know if the LDH is affected by fasting but I wonder why you are asking that--especially when you are talking about cholesterol meds. LDH is an enzyme that is high when a lot of cells are dying. Those cells can be any kind but they typically look for that when testing for cml. When someone has active disease and starts a new drug they would likely be interested in the LDH as it can indicate that cml cells are dying (presumably as a result of the drug). When people first start Gleevec I think they have raised LDH. I wonder if you are confusing LDH with HDL (which is a measure of cholesterol)? Are your counts being impacted by the drug? I'm really sorry to hear about the nausea and tongue numbing. I certainly hope that doesn't continue. Guest guest
Hi Bobby, Thanks for sharing all the information and happy you're doing okay in spite of the nausea and numbness which I'm sure is no fun at all no matter how nice the hotel room was! I look forward to your updates and have my fingers crossed for easier infusion side effects (or none, even better) and good counts. Guest guest
THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU DOROTHY EMERY, I KNEW SOMETHING WAS NOT RIGHT WITH ALL OF THIS!!!!! YOU WOULD THINK HAVING CML FOR 13 YEARS I WOULD KNOW MORE THAN I DO, BUT THAT'S THE WAY IT GOES. WHEN THE PERSON CALLED TODAY TO GIVE ME MY LABS, I DON'T THINK SHE WAS A NURSE, JUST SOMEONE DOING AS SHE WAS TOLD. WHEN SHE SAID THE LDH WAS 289, IT WAS YOURS TRULY HERE, THAT ASKED IF THAT WASN'T THE CHOLESTEROL COUNT AND SHE SAID YES.... SO I GOT MY SELF IN A SNIT, BECAUSE THE LAST TIME WE DID CHOLESTEROL IT WAS 146. BUT EVEN STRANGER IS THE FACT THAT WITH ALL THE LABS THEY DID THIS WEEK, I NEVER ASKED FOR A COPY OF THEM, AND THEY FORGOT TO GIVE ME ONE. SO I THANK YOU FOR CLEARING THIS UP FOR ME, AND NOW I WANT TO KNOW, IS THE 289 HIGH FOR LDH? I HAD BEEN ON SPRYCEL, BUT OBVIOUSLY IT WASN'T WORKING OR I WOULD NOT BE IN A NEW TRIAL. GUESS I'LL LOOK UP SOME OF MY OLDER LABS AND COMPARE. THANKS AGAIN, BLESSINGS, BOBBY Dorothy Emery <doemery@...> wrote: Hi Bobby, I don't know if the LDH is affected by fasting but I wonder why you are asking that--especially when you are talking about cholesterol meds. Guest guest
Hi Bobby, I hope I don't confuse you more here but could you possibly have mixed up LDL with LDH? LDL does refer to your cholesterol, it's the low density lipoprotein which is known as the " bad " cholesterol. LDH is known as LD here in Canada and that's lactate dehydrogenase which is invloved in cell break down but it's not very specific so you could have a high LD count when you're having a heart attack, when your liver is strained, when your having a lot of cells dying because of leukemia or when you hurt a muscle doing exercise. I can't say from your count of 289 if it would be either of the tests because you could actually have that number for either of them. I guess the moral of this story is....always get a copy of your results Take care, Tracey > > > Hi Folks, well, I've been to the U. of Mich. and back, and I'm still > > alive and kicking! > > The drug had a weird effect on me, aside from tossing breakfast, it > > made my tongue numb! > > It feel like I was at the DDS and had Novocaine, and the numbness is > > just starting to wear off. Guest guest
HI TRACEY, I WAS IN PHASE 11 OF THE GLEEVEC TRIAL IN PORTLAND, AND HAD NO IDEA THERE WAS A CML WEBSITE I COULD GO TO. I NOT ONLY HAD NO ONE TO TALK TO ABOUT IT, I HAD TO LEAVE MY FAMILY AND MOVE THERE FOR TWO WHOLE MONTHS. WHAT I WOULD HAVE GIVEN FOR THIS SITE AT THAT TIME, SO IT IS WITH GREAT PLEASURE I AM ABLE TO SHARE MY NEWEST TRIAL EXPERIENCES WITH THE GROUP. FOR SOME REASON, IN PORTLAND, AT OHSU, I ONLY MET ONE PERSON IN THE TRIAL. BUT WHEN I WAS IN THE SPRYCEL TRIAL AT MDACC, A WHOLE GROUP OF US MET ALL THE TIME AND STILL KEEP IN TOUCH. I SPEND TIME IN ANN ARBOR WITH ERNIE AND LEN PASCHAL, SHE IS IN THE TRIAL, AND ANOTHER COUPLE FROM ALABAMA, SHE IS ALSO IN THE TRIAL. IT WAS LIKE OLD HOME WEEK. I AM ALL IN FAVOR OF A GROUP MEETING, IT WOULD BE NICE IF WE COULD WORK ONE OUT, IT IS NICE TO MEET EVERYONE ON LINE, BUT EVEN NICER TO LOOK THEM IN THE EYE, SAY HELLO, AND SHARE LUNCH OR DINNER WITH THEM. WE'LL HAVE TO WORK ON THAT EVERYONE. BLESSINGS, BOBBY Tracey <traceyincanada@...> wrote: Hi Bobby, It's so valuable to have your experiences so thanks so much for sharing them. Guest guest
Right on, Tracey, I did get them mixed up, thanks, but I still don';t know, if it is the ldh pertaining to cells, is 289 bad or good? Guest guest
Hi Bobby, I'm afraid that I can't help much since every lab seems to have its own reference value for LD. I've had mine done at two different labs (in the same city) and one had 200 as the upper limit of normal and the other had 600 as the upper limit of normal. Don't worry Sharon _____ From: [mailto: ] On Behalf Of ROBERTA DOYLE Sent: Thursday, May 01, 2008 7:29 PM Subject: Re: [ ] Dr. Talpaz/XL228 Right on, Tracey, I did get them mixed up, thanks, but I still don';t know, if it is the ldh pertaining to cells, is 289 bad or good? Bobby Tracey <traceyincanada@ <mailto:traceyincanada%40> > wrote: Hi Bobby, I hope I don't confuse you more here but could you possibly have mixed up LDL with LDH?
