Guest guest
Good Morning! Just a quick question....Is there anyone in the Rochester area that sells tallow? I was pondering whether my ambition level was high enough to render some beef fat myself but have decided that I am way too lazy! Guest guest
There is a Mennonite bulk store (Oakhill) just south of Penn Yan on route 14A that carries tallow or did a year or so ago. Are there any Mennonite bulk stores in farming communities aro. Rochester? I did render some beef fat some years ago and it's really quite easy. Just boil it a long time, put it in the fridge overnight after that and remove the beautiful white fat from the top of the pan the next day. It did smell a bit beefy though, even in the soap I made with it. You would have to scent it with something strong like peppermint. It made a beautiful hard bar of soap. Guest guest
I got past that by triple-rendering it. No scent. > > There is a Mennonite bulk store (Oakhill) just south of Penn Yan on route 14A that carries tallow or did a year or so ago. Guest guest
Never. Mine is white like shortening and doesn't really have an odor, especially not meat-like or off, nothing unpleasant. Did you send some of it back to them? I ordered from Columbus Foods and both 50 pounders had black specks in the bottom of the pot once melted. I contacted CF and someone contacted me and said he'd have his lab look into the matter. Has anyone else run into this issue? I already know about the smell of the tallow but the gritty specks concern me.
