Guest guest
Hi Steph, so sorry your boy friend has cml, is he going to a cml expert? When you take Gleevec you must take it with a substantial amount of food. Like a large breakfast, maybe with some milk too. And he should not lie down directly after taking it, this too can make him sick. It does take a while to get used to this drug, it took me almost 2 months. I had nausea, headaches, pains in the upper back and in general sometimes wanted to die. Does he split his does? Like half in the morning and the other half in the evening? Some times, I would eat a bit, take a pill, eat some more and take another pill. But he will get adapted to it it believe me. The yellow is something someone else will have to answer. Br patient, this is a powerful drug and the body takes time to adjust to it. Good luck, Bobby stephzour <stephzour@...> wrote: Hi everybody. Guest guest
Steph, The only thing I know of that would make someone yellow has something to do with the liver. Like babies when they come home from the hospital they are watch for jaundice . Be sure to let your dr. know. Guest guest
Thanks Bobby. So far is he taking the whole pill at about 9pm. We thought since fatigue might be an issue its better to take it at night and he can go straight to sleep. But maybe we were wrong. I am not sure if our doctor is a CML expert. We are going to in Hamilton, Ontario. However I also pushed him to make an appointment with Dr. Lipton in Toronto at Princess Margaret. From what I hear, he is great, and definitely an expert. Maybe breakfast is another time we should consider. Thanks for your input! Steph > Hi everybody. > My boyfriend has just started gleevec, it has been 2 days now. Guest guest
I think everyone finds their own 'time' to take Gleevec... I usually take mine about 11:00 pm with a bowl of cereal. (Raisin Bran will NOT work. Fruit loops, apple jacks okay. Cheerios with bananas - NOT okay. ) So, you'll have to experiment with what foods work. Then, I go to bed about 11:30 or midnight. After waiting 1/2 hour. I do NOT eat anything after I take the pill, unless it is a bite or two to get it all the way down. Sometimes it feels stuck. In the early days, I had to eat what felt like 1/2 a loaf of bread in order not to feel sick. Journal what foods work and what don't... you'll see a pattern. Steak and brocilli, though very filling, do not go well with Gleevec. I don't know about the yellow. Guest guest
Sharon, I have not been on Gleevec since 2004, and was on 600 mg. a day. I took 3 and 3, as each capsule was 100 mg. What dose is your friend on? I would think taking it at night would be ok, but does he eat a large meal before bedtime? If you wait to long, and your stomach is empty you will get sick. Dr. Lipton will have all your answers, and this group will help give you all your questions, so be of good cheer, help is near! Bobby stephzour <stephzour@...> wrote: Thanks Bobby. Guest guest
Hi Steph, The yellow color is a sign of liver toxicity (jaunisse). It may or may not be serious but you should let your dr know quickly to have liver enzymes tested. A significant minority of people are intolerant to gleevec, what is ok now as there are other drugs that work as well as gleevec and do not have this side effect. A few people on this list had the same problem and are now doing fine on Sprycel or Tasigna. Marcos. Guest guest
Dear Steph, I was one of the ones who suffered from high liver enzymes. I guess it's possible to turn yellow after 2 doses of gleevec but, I really think it would take longer. What else has he been taking? Is he drinking alcohol or taking tylenol? These probably should be avoided until he finds out how he will tolerate the gleevec. I really didn't turn too yellow but I had horrible itching and that is what sent me to the ER. He really should be checked out by a doctor. If it is the gleevec, there are ways of making the body accept it. Lynn F. [ ] Gleevec concern Hi everybody. Guest guest
Steph,if you look at the signature at the bottom, it will tell you ALL the trials I have been in and the drugs. I am now on a new one, it's an infusion, once a week in Ann Arbor MI, and it's known as XL228, have NO idea what it is. Except after 3 infusions I am back in CCR, or complete cytogenetic remission. It is not without it's complications, I am anemic, and now I am neutropenic. Low blood counts, and low neutrifils, and will get a transfusion Mon. It all sounds real bad, but I feel pretty good and after the transfusion will feel much better. There are lots of things out there now, so if Gleevec is not the answer, there are other ways to go, and the appointment with Dr. Lipton will put you at ease, I am sure, Good luck, Bobby ps, if you dont mind, it would be easier to say a name, rather than , your boy friend, so do you think you could tell us his name? Also, it's much nicer to say a name in a prayer rather than Steph's boy friend!! If I missed it, sorry, I am very forgetful.... stephzour <stephzour@...> wrote: Bobby, what are you on now since you have stopped Gleevec in 2004? Guest guest
Steph Yellow - Have no idea - is that like a jaundice colour -.Jaundice is a liver issue. I don't ever recall turning yellow as glivec side effect. I would suggest you contact your specialist asap Bobby has given you good advise You must eat stodgy food - not salads etc with glivec - you need carbohydrates, something for the chemicals to hold onto. You also must be hydrated. Be up and about before you have your meal and as suggested do not go and lay or sit down - you need to move about. Try different times of eating (some people have lunch, dinner, early meals - etc) I have mine at breakfast with 2 pieces of toast with jam - I take 600mg so I take 600ml of water I no longer take any milk fats with glivec Milk, yoghurt etc was making me queesy. After taking breakfast, glivec, water I then go for a walk. I only have hot chocolate with milk and any milk products in the afternoon . The yellow colour is an issue that must be sorted as soon as possible - could be another medical problem. Nothing worse than feeling queezy Sue

Guest guest
Steph, My doctor said take it with largest meal of the day--about halfway through the meal--so you have some food, take your Gleevec, then have some more food--it sort of protects your stomach. Also, take an acid blocker--Prevacid or something similar--that really helped me feel better. The yellow skin is definitively something to talk to the doctor about. Could be jaundice. I have had vomiting too--but only when I neglected the taking with food part. That is very important. Good luck. Let us know how it goes.
