I was reading the post on grapefruit, but I recall when I started Gleevec

being told to avoid garlic as well. Does garlic have the same effect.

While I am asking my old school questions, what was the deal, again, with

avoiding too much sunshine? Was the purly because of blistering, or is there

some additional interaction? I love the sun, being in it and always wanted as

much as I can stand.

Hi

I'm not aware of any interactions with garlic. I certainly wouldn't

worry about any garlic you might add to foods such as spaghetti

sauces. I'm not sure I'd take the garlic pills though.

The issue with the sun is that Gleevec inhibits melanin production to

a certain degree so you could burn much more easily than you would

have otherwise. Melanin is what turns us brown when we tan so if the

melanin is inhibited, the brown colour doesn't come as

easy .....meaning that the red colour will result sooner (burn).

For the first years I was on Gleevec I avoided the sun like a vampire

but this year, given all the positive reports about vit D, I've

decided to go out for 15 mins a day and much to my surprise, I've

found that I have been able to " tan " . I use quotation marks because

it's not really a tan, but it has given me just enough colour to say

that I look normal now and not like a sheet of paper anymore.

You have to keep in mind the risk of skin cancer though and balance

that with the benefit of Vit D. I've decided that 15 mins a day is

the balance that I'm willing to take but to each his/her own.

Take care,

Tracey

After a transplant sun is really not a good thing, but on gleevec I

have never read. I am outdoors all the time, ocean, swim everyday in

an outdoor pool, and I don't have special problems so far. I do avoid

getting burn but that's bad for anyone. I do have a very fair northern

europe skin.

thanks Marcos. I honestly do not think I have burnt once since Gleevec and I

think I do stay in the sun as much as I ever had in the past. Just did not

want to do anything that might interfere with the Gleevec.

You burn - good reason to stay out of the sun

I also have experienced lightening of skin - so cover up.

Grapefruit also be aware of not to eat Starfruit which is in the same family

Garlic - not sure of that one
