Guest guest
SharonS, You have a good doc there my dear. I have had 4 BMB since being dxed in 04 and have never been knocked out. They give me a local and some other stuff to make me loopy, but otherwise I am awake. Not to scare you(you will be knocked out so you will not feel a thing) but BMB to me are very painful even with being medicated, and I was stabbed once in my youth...lol. I love my docs but I always have to remind them that if they do not want me to come off the table they better drug me..lol. Take care and hang in there:) Terry On Sat, Aug 2, 2008 at 11:58 AM, serenitywon <serenitywon@...> wrote: > Hello, > First I would like to thank everyone for the positive feedback from > my update.I also have a BMB quetion. > What can I expect with my 1st BMB? Guest guest
Sharon: BMBs are part of who we are, for the foreseeable future, and some facilities do them better than others. While they are uncomfortable, you will get used to them and learn how to prepare. I like to take my iPod and listen to Christian music as they prep the area and insert the Lidocaine, when they prepare for the aspiration (which is the most uncomfortable part) then I switch to heavy metal and turn it up loud. The aspiration is always over before the end of the song and the uncomfortableness only lasts a short period of time. LET THEM KNOW IF YOU ARE UNCOMFORTABLE AND THEY WILL TRY AND GO SLOWER OR GIVE YOU MORE LIDOCAINE. I have tried various drugs before hand and for the duration, it really was not worth it to me. It was over and done with before I knew it. I have been sedated for one and that was not painful, but it was cumbersome as it took time for the medications and prep and oh my, that back- less gown showing my now plump rear to everyone. If you are going to big cancer centers like MDACC or Sloan Kettering, try speaking to older patients and they may be able to tell you who to ask for to do your BMB/BMA. For instance, I learned that at MDACC was virtually painless and he did 6 or 7 of mine. Other patients will fill you in, good advice for us all as we move from place to place. Guest guest
Sharon: Like any procedure when you are knocked out, you will be a little " foggy " for a while, so unless your procedure is done really early in the day, you may not want to return to work. Having had this procedure as well, it will be painless and when you wake up you will be still have the local. When the local wears off, just remember to walk around a little bit as that helps it from hurting. There is nothing to be nervous about, this will be a walk in the park for you. Guest guest
Sharon, ditto to what Matt said. It is not worth being put to sleep. Most technicians give you the lidocaine, then check it out to be sure you are numb, if not, they give you more., After the numbing, the procedure does not take that long, and maybe if you are that nervous you could ask for a tranquilizer, like Valium? I have really never had a bad one, and hate being sedated, it lasts too long. When I was in the Gleevec trial and had to fly to Oregon all the time, I would get a bma/bmb procedure done at 10 am and fly back home on the 1 pm flight, no discomfort at all. So, good luck to you, and try not to worry about it, when it's all over you will laugh and say, that wasn't all that bad!! Bobby a (Bobby) Doyle Brecksville, Ohio, USA DX 05/1995 02/2000 - Gleevec Trial/OHSU 06/2002 - Gleevec/Trisenox Trial/OHSU 06/2003 - Gleevec/Zarnestra Trial/OHSU 04/2004 - Sprycel Trial/MDACC, CCR in 10 months #840 -  Zavie's Zero Club 09/2006 - out of CCR 04/29/08 - XL228 Trial/ U.of Michigan 06/02/08 - CCR ( in 4 weeks)  > > > Hello, > > First I would like to thank everyone for the positive feedback from > > my update.I also have a BMB quetion. > > What can I expect with my 1st BMB? Guest guest
Hi Sharon, As others have said, if you get someone who knows what they're doing, there is no need for sedation, let alone general sedation. I've never had any kind of sedation, just the lidocaine. Once the lidocaine wears off you might feel like you've been kicked in the back side, (a lingering achy kind of feeling) but it's very tolerable and many people do go back to work right away. Since you're already on narcotics, you may not even feel that much. The entire procedure from start to finish shouldn't last longer than 15 mins so it would seem a shame to be knocked out and have to deal with a day of lingering effects from the sedation for something that can be finished so quickly but it's up to you. As for your bad hips, is it your joints that are bad or the hip bones themselves? The biopsy is done in the middle of the hip bone and has nothing to do with the joint so hopefully it won't be a problem but if it is, you could ask your doctor if he/she does sternum biopsies. Guest guest
Tracey, Thank you and all who have taken the time to respond to my questions. I don't have fluid left between the joints and my bones themselves are deteriorating. So I believeit is joints and bones tha I have issues with.I will ask about the sternum bmb.Anyone here have them done? Maybe I shuld just try the hip BMB and see how it goes? The Dr. said he would use the better of the two bad hips..My left is worse than he right.I will keep everyone posted as what happens. Thaks again to you and everyone for responding. Guest guest
Hi Sharon, L has had sternum biopsies, hopefully she'll post about it but I do remember her saying that she prefers them over the hip ones. They do come with an increased risk for problems though so not all doctors will do them and those who do, REALLY need to know what they're doing. You don't want anyone putting a needle that close to your heart without REALLY knowing what they're doing! As for the no contact with water, that's just to avoid infection because the biopsy will leave you with a little hole (open wound) that needs to close up a bit before you start immersing it in water.
