Guest guest
Hello and Welcome. I am Beth, mommy to Austin ds, and Dakota, (4) twins...Gee, life on the farm sounds really nice. I would give anything to move my boys out to the country. Hope there are some good services for you there. This list usually is very entertaining and informative, and I hope you liked 's list...LOL...It's just that the list is really quiet right now. We live in Indiana, just northeast of Indy. My husband is retired Navy, though he works 6 to 7 days a week at another job, (If he didn't, I'd go crazy), and I am a vet of the Navy myself. We never managed to get to Texas, but I have driven thru it many times. I love it. Welcome to the group, and just wait, it really does get exciting. Guest guest
Thanks Beth We do love living here. I think we have some great services, but living in Texas one must always expect to spend a good amount of time in the car. It is a big place. We live about 2 hours from a major children's medical center where they have all kinds of special DS clinics. Nina has had two surgeries there. We have Early Childhood Intervention which provides OT, PT, ST in our home (and other services I'm sure). The children's medical center provides clinics in several locations which are only about 36 miles away (with no traffic). I am lucky to have a pediatrician who stays on top of new things. There is a new facility being built about 20 miles from us that will offer EquiTherapy and the university which is 30 miles the other direction already does offer a program. Nina is not ready for that - she has not had her neck x-rayed yet and won't until after she is 3. If we lived somewhere else we might find that we don't have the services available closer to a city, but this is where we are. Kind of like you don't know what you're missing if you've never had it!! The one thing I think we lack is a group of other DS families to meet with. I look forward to all the excitement to come!! Thanks.
Guest guest
Dear Sue G, You should ask about the diet, she has had the best luck. I did try it, not very strictly though. I couldn't find much of a difference because I had so many polyps and I was so congested. But I did find after fish and rice (no spices)! it helped. The first or second day of fish and rice (plain) I noticed a little bit of improvement. You might have meant the from New Mexico. Today was my first day of desensitization! All went well! I started out on 1/4 of a baby chewable orange flavored aspirin (20 mg) . All ok. I had to wait 3 hours for a reaction that didn't come. We broke for lunch, (Kentucky Fried Chicken, which later after an hour or so I didn't feel so well ). After the lunch break I had 1/2 of a baby aspirin (40 mg). After about 2 1/2 hours I had a runny nose, sneezing, and "bug" eyes. So then they gave me 4 prednisone tablets, a singulair, and a Zyrtec. After 1 1/2 hours I felt better and I got to go home. Still feeling GREAT! Can breathe through my nose! No sense of smell though. P.S: Today my Aspirin desensitizing doctor told my family and I that my ENT told him that I had the most polyps in my sinuses than anyone else my age that she has seen. Guest guest
K, Yes, I didn't have much weight to lose, but I had a LOT of fat to lose. I'm one of those classic " skinny fat " people. I was " blessed " with a slim (or should I say " skimpy " ) upper body, but all my weight goes to the legs. So, I looked really unbalanced. I can't tell you if losing 20 lbs is realistic for you or not. Sure wish I could! I think what's more important is that you like how you look. That's what I've found out the hard way. Two years ago, I did drop down to 118 lbs (my " ideal " weight) doing just cardio (no weights) and I didn't like how I looked there either! I think muscles are so much better looking than just being a certain weight. I think it was skinnieme who listed her weight as 130 or so(correct me if I'm wrong, skinnieme). And I'd LOVE to look like she does in her pix! I know there are other bodybuilding ladies whose " off- season " weight is in the 130-140s. And again, I'd love to look that good! (I will look that good...I will look that good...LOL) Marie > In a message dated 2/17/2004 7:08:58 AM Eastern Standard Time, > writes: > started at 128 lbs and about 23-24% body fat. Guest guest
Hi Alice, Actually, I see my audiologist next Wednesday to try on and discuss each of the different implant devices. As of now, I've decided to get Advanced Bionics' HiRes 90K because of the features it offers (T-mic, direct connect, Powercel battery life up to 17 hours, rotary controls on their PSP). However, if I see or learn something new about the Nucleus, I may change my mind. I've already made a list of the features I like from both implants, so now it's time to compare each one in terms of comfort, ease of inserting/removing batteries, maintenance and customer service. Alice, I have a question. This may vary from center to center, but is insurance approval usually submitted before or after a CI candidate views each of the devices? Guest guest
, I am not sure about this as I don't have information about all centers but I believe the majority, at least, submit the claim to insurance as soon as the patient is a qualified and has decided to have the surgery. I appreciate the information you gave me. I do think that the biggest step is the one you will be taking next week (sorry - I thought it was yesterday or I wouldn't have asked). Good luck! Guest guest
Alice, No problem. Thanks for asking! I will be sure to inform the list about my final decision next Wednesday.
Guest guest
Alice, Now that I think of it, when I saw my surgeon last month, he asked me if I still wanted to go ahead with the surgery. I said yes and he responded that he and my audi would send out the appropriate paperwork. That probably means the paperwork was sent in, but I'll double-check on Wednesday to make sure I'm understanding everything that is going on. Guest guest
Hi, , It's actually almost 7 months now, and, yes, time flies when you're having fun! <smiles> My audi wrote everything down for me when I did the testing, but, of course, I can't find the paper he wrote it on now! (cursing under my breath) It showed VERY good results, though! I got 100% sentences in quiet with the 3G and the Freedom, separately and together. I got in the 80% range for the Freedom and 70% range for the 3G in the single words. (Although in real life it seems the oposite so far) In noise it was somewhat less all around. While in real life I still struggle to understand when I'm with more than one ot two people, but it is MUCH better than ever before. While I'm always thinking and saying that it is not perfect, I'm noticing lately that in the car I am understanding a lot on the radio (speaking, not so much music lyrics) and I couldn't do that with hearing aids or as well with just one CI. So I'm really trying to be more appreciate of how much I AM hearing. Believe me, I thank G-d and my hubby, doctors and everyone else who helped me learn about and get this modern miracle of technology. That includes everyone here on the forums. I am so happy to know that you are benefitting so much from going bilateral. It may take a bit of time to get the best map for the Freedom, but it will come. I'm still working on mine. Funny, I like the high frequency sound, so we do maps that " emphasize " the highs. You can have the same done with the lows, " emphasize " them (by giving you more and bringing down the highs) to get to the sound you want. Again, it's trial and error, but it will come. To you, too, continued good luck with all your endeavors! ) Jackie
