Just my opinion...

orth-O-tist sounds so Canadian (no offense anyone)

I always thought it was or-thought-ist.

tomato/tomahto

I don't think it matters...

LOL Kerri!

Although most DOCband technicians are actually Physical or

occupational therapists & not technically orthotists, I've always

pronounced it " orth O tist " , but what the hell do I know? I called

the DOCband, D.O.C. band for years, not til I went to Phoenix did I

learned it's called the " DOCKband " ...boy was I embarrassed, here I

was, group owner at the time, been around for 2+ yrs and NEVER

pronounced it properly....D'oh!!!

Debbie

Good luck tomorrow :)

When I called my orthotist's voicemail on, she said "orth" a "tist" with the emphasis on the middle syllable. I like it better the other way- so I think I will say it my way!

Hi-

If you look at the pronunciation key on dictionary.com, the first way is right, with the emphasis on the second syllable.

Thank you Dora,

This question came to me in a private email and I addressed the non-

removal of the silicone coating. But what you have explained gives

me a better picture of what they are asking. So Hemali the alcoholl

pad is wrapped somewhat like a book cove over the 'connection' to

prevent mist or spray of the withdrawl process from contaminating

an area, or leading to a safety issue.

" Chemo Pins " have been used for years to help prevent this spraying.

Some techs have told me that it is difficult to find such safety

devices any more.

Phaseal is a great device that 'captures' the fumes and mist and

therefore aerosolized solids. I first heard of the Phaseal in 2000

at the ASHP Mid Year convention and First reported on it on Pharmacy

Island during my chemo discussion. I have a demo kit for my class

on it.

Keep an eye on changes in laws and practice regarding chemo

prepartation. It is my goal and my prediction that you will see old

hoods being replaced by new ones with gloves attached. SElf -

contained hoods you might say. Also there are much better gloves,

masks , gowns etc which are more chemo repellant for a lack of

better description. I think we will see a whole different way

of 'thinking' about contamination in the near future. This has

already occured but only a few facilities have implemented ways to

change the exposure levels. We will have to change location of chemo

IV making, air conditioning and heating ducts, exhaust

hoods/scrubbing hoods etc.

A great hot topic!

> Hi Hemali-

> Some publications suggest wrapping (cupping) a sterile gauze

around the vial and needle will help avoid spread/spraying of

aerosol droplets. I don't believe one is supposed to actually

touch/grasp the needle with the gauze---sounds like an invitation

for a needle stick to me! I know there are a few " chemo "

preparation/dispensing products out there to reduce staff/patient

exposure to cytotoxics. I'm trying to persuade our pharmacy to use

the " PhaSeal " system by Baxa--its a really great set up ,but its

expensive---adding between $6-$10 to the cost of each prepared

item. I hope the administration will recognize staff/patient safety

is worth the investment.

Excellent summary of all the houston products. The only thing I would add is

that Zyme Prime is good for carbs, proteins and fats. It does not contain DPP

IV so if helping stay off a GFCF diet is a goal, one of the Peptizyde products

is necessary.

it would help if you talk about your your son a bit more esp the

digestive side.

houstonni pep and zyme seem to be a good place to start.

there seem to be issues with doctors pushing enzyme formulations that

they get a mark up on rather than what works best. bascially you are

Hi Coral,

> Hi, I am new here, so please forgive my silly question...

Welcome! No question is too silly here, yadda yadda, lol.

> If I want to give my some digestive enzymes, which one should I

start with? Are there different kinds, as there are vitamins?

Yes, there are many different enzyme products, some better than

others. I think the general consensus on this board is that the

Houston enzymes www.houstonni.com are by far most effective.

Occasionally a gut can be damaged enough that a more " gentle " enzyme

is needed until enough healing has occured to use the Houston's. We

use Houston's AFP and No-Fenol very successfully, but my son has not

done well on Houston's Zyme Prime or Enzymedica's Carbo, both of

which target carbohydrates. If you think your child could tolerate

Houston's you should probably start there.

> How do you find out which one is the one that is needed?

It depends on what you're trying to achieve. Here's a little cheat

sheet (Listmates, keep me honest!):

Zyme Prime -- targets carbs; easiest entry into world of enzymes for

many kids (though my son couldn't tolerate it)

Peptizyde (or AFP Peptizyde if you know phenols are a problem) --

targets gluten, casein, soy, proteins when given with food; if given

in between meals, is a great virus fighter ( " digests " the virus wall

to allow your body to fight the virus better) and some report mood

enhancer; Zyme Prime and Pep together can create the " Happy Child

Effect " -- very powerful combination

No-Fenol -- targets high phenol foods and possibly chemical

additives; reportedly great for ADHD; given in between meals, combats

yeast by breaking down the cell wall to allow the body or your yeast

product to better fight the yeast; can be the most difficult

adjustment for some kids (my son had no problems)

> If I wanted to take my son to a doctor who may know about this, who

would that specialist be?

Umm, sorry, but you're about to become the specialist. Most doctors

will envision a third eye on your forehead if you start talking about

this stuff... You could try a DAN doc, some are better than

others... You're probably better off just reviewing

www.enzymestuff.com and reading DeFelice's book Enzymes for

Autism. Then you'll be the expert and have the control and means to

help your child.

Good luck and let us know where you start.

This is a very interesting comment. When I brought my daughter to see a

gasterentologist (sp?) for traditional tests-you know the only ones the

insurance company will pay for-, she wrote something on the final doctor's

report that I found to be odd/CYA. She found nothing wrong by her standards;

ignored the stool test showing bacteria overgrowth and low good bacteria by

saying " all stool consists of bacteria " ; claimed yeast overgrowth is ridiculous

and sited a study from 15 years ago that she claims proves there is nothing to

it; and lastly claimed there was no problem, except behavior. But on her

report, she wrote " and I did not (something couldn't read the word) yeast or

prescribe chelation " . We had briefly talked about yeast, but the word chelation

NEVER entered the conversation. There clearly was a hidden agenda with that

one, just not sure what.

Thank you all for your wealth of information!!!!

There are not DAN doctors around here, and I was hoping a

nutricionist, endocrinologist or gastroenterologist would know about

enzymes... not????

My son has been GFCF since July. Last December he had worse behavior,

and we started to notice red cheeks on and off (specially when eating

at other people's homes...) I ordered the Feingold book and cut off

the little " box " food we were using with him. Haven't gone full

Feingold yet because he loves candles, and also I haven't had a

chance to compare the GFCF diet with the Feingold list!!!!

In January he started having flat stools, I started reading about

SCD. We tried Epson Salt baths, which he enjoys. We went corn free

and soy free at the end of January. His behavior improved a little. I

finally took him to pediatrician, and she ordered KUB, which

confirmed he has a large amount of stool in colon -- yet he goes to

the bathroom once, if not twice a day!!!! Hospital stool tests were

negative for yeast (culture), blood, bacteria. We started milk of

magnesia about 3 weeks ago... His behavior got a lot better.

My son is 9 years old, 86 lb (he is a little overweight) - went from

eating only chicken nuggets, pretzels, crackers and fish sticks to a

more varied diet including lettuce, spinach, celery, every day. He

always hated bananas, but he now likes them. He eats liver, lamb,

pork, chicken, any type of fish... But he always asks for bread,

potato chips... Carbohydrate addiction (like his mom!)

I haven't been able to notice any specific reactions to foods, except

that sometimes he gets the red cheeks and ears, but the next time I

give it to him (if I do) he seems fine... for example nuts,

chocolate and Walmart brand potato chips.

So right now I am just worried about this constipation, and I am

considering options: SCD diet? Enzymes? SCD diet + Enzymes?

Feingold first? Should we do OATs first? Would a Food Allergy

panel tell us what to avoid or supplement?

Can Anyone tell me what size the Kirkmans Super Nu Thera are.... i.e Are they

bigger than a tylenol caplet or are they REALLY big?? I have taught my

daughter to swallow m & m's & she does well and since we are almost out of the

yucky

tasting liquid Super Nu THera. I was hoping to make the A.M's more pleasant by

not having to fight to get her to drink the " yucky Vitamin Juice " as it is

referred to in our house...

Thanx!!!

Best wishes to you all!!

AFP worked for soy for my kids, so if you have not removed soy [which

is commonly not tolerated] then it would be good. I used Peptizyde

for many things, not necessarily just gluten/casein.

Yes! You can eat pretty much unlimited quantities of green veggies,

tomatoes, etc. did you see that menu Mina had in her post? She was eating up

to 3 cups of veggies in a meal... and look at the results she got!

Silly Question

Ok, BFL states you should add veggies to at least two meals per day.

My question is - can you add veggies to 5 meals? I eat a lot of raw

celery, raw tomatoes, raw cucumbers. I do not add salad dressing or

oil to them, sometimes vinegar or a fat free sour cream.

I did the challenge once before and I did add veggies quite a bit but

can't remember if I did it at that many meals or not!!

I pronounce it kum - boo' - cha

kum sounds like " Come unto me "

boo like " Boo, did I scare your? "

cha like " Let's do the cha-cha-cha "

" Silly " question

How do you say kombucha?

I've been saying it

" comb - boo - shuh "

(but maybe its more of a " cha " at the end?)

and since I've been talking about it non-stop lately

I thought I'd make sure I was saying it " right " !

I have found that there are many ways of saying it. and IMHO all are

acceptable. Just as there are so many names for it, so are there so many

pronunciations. So until someone invents a time machine where we can go

back and ask " Old Doc Kombu " how to say it, we have to go with what

sounds right to ourselves and what we are comfortable with on an

It's not a silly question at all! In fact, I have list on my FAQ list

in the files section.

The difference between en bloc removal and a total capsulectomy is

strictly in how they accomplish the same goal. In en bloc removals, the

capsule is NOT cut into. It is left intact around the implant, and

both the implant and the scar tissue are removed at once. Usually the

doctor will follow the scar tissue around its perimeter, effectively

removing the whole unit of implant and scar tissue in one piece. The

advantage of this removal is that if there is a spill or rupture of the

implant, all of it is contained within the capsule. The capsule serves

as a " container " of sorts.

In a total capsulectomy, the scar capsule can be cut into first to get

at the implant itself. The implant can be either drained or removed at

that point. Then the surgeon will have to go back in and get all of

the scar capsule out. It is a rubbery type of tissue that can be thick

or thin, and may have some involvement with blood supply. That is why

many doctors are not very interested in getting it all out. It can

present some additional effort and make the surgery more involved when

they have to get it all. The best doctors are the ones that are not

afraid of putting out the effort to get it all.

Hopefully that clears it up for you.

As we've said often, the only way of knowing if you scar tissue was

completely removed, short of surgery to go in and open you up, is to

get a copy of your operative report from the explant surgery. Read it

and find out the status of the scar capsule. The discussion will refer

to its removal or partial removal because the doctor HAS to cut into it

to get at the implant if they are not doing an en bloc removal.

thanks patty - this is all still so confusing to me. I do feel good that my implants did not rupture while being taken out. I will request a copy of my expant surgery report. However, I do feel good thus far about my PS. I know I would feel better had I been able to use Dr. Feng but I am not dwelling on it and feel confident in my PS thus far. No reason not to.

Just out of curiousity - why can a mammogram not detect remaining scar tissue?? Does it look to much like breast tissue?

You guys are great - thanks soooo much.

Love,

Beth

Beth,

A mammogram will not be able to detect the difference between calcified scar tissue and a benign or malignant tumor, and that would be the main issue. This would only be after a number of years, because over time the scar tissue may become calcified and be dense enough to show up on an x-ray.

But in the early stages after explant, it is not definable on a mammogram.

This has been plaguing me for months. I reach down and pick up something from carpet. Within seconds I feel like something bit me and I have bumps on my hand. If I put something on like tea tree or neem, a couple of little black specs come out. Is this possible. Can they burrow into your skin this fast . . . or is there some other explanation? I just had to ask this before I forget - again.

From: fritolay66 <fritolay66@...>Subject: Re: Re: Salt & Clorox - Loubird mites Date: Friday, July 4, 2008, 3:40 PM

I don't know if this may help your situation Lou, but use visine or clear eyes. I have had numerous and very bad problems with these things attacking my eyes. It really does help the socket and eyeball itself. If these are biting your eyeballs like mine did, they are in your lashes. I have struggled with them in my lashes and tried everyone's suggestions to no avail. The only things I have found to work, are painful and not something I'm sure I would want to recommend on here. The recipe I posted for lesions, leave the vicks out of the mix and use it on your eyes. The rubbing and the mustard will burn and it will take those nasty things out of your eyelashes. You may be tender due to all the rubbing. Don't rub so hard as to cause injury. The burning dissappates with the rubbing off of the recipe and the "whatevers". Find a way to do this without coming into contact with your

eyeball. When done with this treatment, wash with noxema or something mentholated to get the last remnants of the mustard. Top with visine or clear eyes. Also, something to look out for, my eyeballs were like a mini race track for these things. They enlarged to include the track around my ears. Stay on your ears. Also, I have been working out lately in the 90 degree heat. I noticed with my sweating, it runs straight down my dang forehead to the tip of my nose. They could also be coming from your scalp. I am going to add this recipe minus the Vicks, to Rita's epsom salt and do a full body treatment this evening, ....well, tomorrow, when I get home........ and see what that gets me.

If you or someone decides to try this, do not leave any white specks on your lashes, get them all. If you keep getting them, keep doing it until gone. If you have to do as much rubbing as I did to get to that point, you may also encounter some swelling due to all the mechanical activity.

You will need many Q-tips and a bag of cotton balls. I used so many I ran out, and had to go to a washcloth, in which by the way, I threw it out!!!! The ingredients are cheap, you don't have to order it online, and if it doesn't work, your not stuck liquidating your assests for more stuff.

Re: Salt & Clorox - Lou

Hi Lou,I'm so sorry to hear about your eye! I bet that hurts! :( Hopefully the new salve that they gave you at the emergency room will help. During our infestation we were never bitten in the eyes. Although we could feel on occasion, bits of what felt like gravel. You know... that "gritty feeling"... We would flush our eyes with Thera Tears at night and first thing in the morning. That seemed like it would solve the problem for a while. The Clorox and Salt is something that I'm still doing. I had all of the carpets taken out of the house. We were pretty heavily infested.Since we were living on subflooring, I started bleach mopping and spraying the salts directly on the subfloors. Then one day my husband said why don't you just mix them? So I did and that saved me so much time, which was something I was short on! :)But yes... from that day on.. that killed what few stragglers we had

after the Pest Control Co. spraying. I slop mop now about every 4 days. At first I was doing it either every day or every other day, then down to every 3 days. So keep the bleach and salts going and hopefully you'll get rid of this demon! Mites in the skin... I'm really not sure if we did Lou. I know I could soak myself down with Baby Oil or Cocoa Butter or something greasy afer a long soak in the tub and then a while later I could "roll off" what felt like little granules. They were bright white in color. It could have been eggs or It could have been just dried flaky skin... I truly don't know. We knew from the beginning that whatever it was that we had, we could not let them reside on us. We were takng 3-4 showers a day and slathering unappealing creams, salves and lotions all over us. Then Ray suggested using "Original Listerine" to spray on all over before you take a shower. We

started doing that and it really helped. My husband swears by the Gold Bond Medicated Lotion (Green Bottle). He rubbed this all over him before bedtime, and they wouldn't bother him. Another thing we did was to take a q-tip and either using Vaseline or Aquaphor, rub this just right on the inside of our nostrils and our ears. If you feel any of them in your sinuses, then gargle with the Listerine AFTER you put the salve in your nose. They'll get stuck in the salve trying to vacate! It's a stange feeling...Hope you have a great 4th! >> thank you so much trlyblest. Did you have to do it more than once. Tonight is the first night I have walked into back bedroom and not gotten bit. I did my car today also. Now if I can just get

them out of my skin. I went to eye dr. yesterday. I think I must have gotten bit in eye because I thought i had infection and dr. in urgent care gave me antibiotic salve, then I got worse and wnt to emergency and I was given a different antibiotic salve. I was in so much pain and my eyelid was spasming. Eye dr. took a look and said no infection, but cornea was extremely irritated and salve was making it worse. Finally today the pain subsided and no spasming. I can't believe this hell. I lost my job due to downsizing but I don't know if i could have worked and fought this much longer anyway. I am raising my 4 yr. old granddaughter and she has only had a few bites where I have been covered. Did you have them in your skin?> lou>

Yes, what ever we had on our skin when exposed to the "thing" the reaction was fast and immediate. Nothing worked on us but the Clorox. My husband's way of soaping up his wash cloth and then squirting straight Clorox on the wash cloth was an easy way of Cloroxing the eyes, lips and ears. When we started doing this every night our face and head became clear of the things. What ever they are they are fast and dig in to the lower layers of the skin. Very hard to get at. Rita

:)But yes... from that day on.. that killed what few stragglers we had after the Pest Control Co. We started doing that and it really helped. Now if I can just get them out of my skin.

Ditto that. Lightning fast. I have watched a few and it only takes seconds. They seem to melt right on in. I did want to let everyone know, I did a whole body treatment last night without the salt. After showering and light scrubbing, I am still having these things pop "out like daisies". Black specks and white specks. Rita, we may well have two methods that work. I am curious if anyone here will experience what I have. I did want to add, I have empty capsules in which I filled two each of the mustard and ginger. I am hoping to get them from the inside and outside. I plan on taking this once a day. These freckles are disappearing too. The clorox does work also........I did try it Rita,....;) Have a good fourth

everyone.
