Hello Lottie, I don't quite understand the whole medicare thing. I was finally

approved for disability last may which was 4yrs 3 mos. since diagnosis. And

almost 7 years from BC dx. I was told that after receiving disability for two

years i will then get medicare. This is different from what you said. Can you

make sense of any of this? Debra

Would you like to learn about resources that may be available to you- ease some

of the pressure and help prevent huge debt at the end of your treatment. This is

what you or whoever takes care of your medical expenses needs to do right now.

Medicare is a federal program for people who are over 65 years of age or have

been permanently disabled for more than 24 months (a fact many cancer patients

do not know). Medicare covers more than 1 million cancer patients per year. If

Medicare covers you, you should know that there are many additional Medigap and

underinsured benefits for cancer patients. http://www.caring4c ancer.com/

Debra,

Pardon me if I'm sticking my nose in where it isn't wanted, but I worked for the

Social Security Administration for ten years.  Admittedly, this was almost

twenty-five years ago, but the link following my comments tells nothing as to

your issue  has changed in this regard.

In short, as the link states, you become entitled to Medicare twenty-four months

after your date of entitlement for Social Security disability benefits.  That

date of entitlement for disability is the date of the onset of your disability

as established by the Social Security Adm. PLUS the five-month waiting period.

The date of your disability per Social Security  isn't necessarily the onset of

leukemia.  If you have questions, though, call your Social Security office and

discuss it with someone there.  If you think your date of disability onset

should have been established earlier, you can appeal the administration's

decision on that score.  Discuss that with Social Security, too.  Note, though,

you have to appeal within a certain time from notification by the administration

of the date they've established, so do this right away.  Good luck.
