Guest guest
I would like advice on what I should put in my smoothie to help me with my anemia. My ferritin level is 2 and needs to get into the 70's, so I have got to get busy. I am thinking kale, 1/4 of a beet and an apple to sweeten it. Also started taking Hemo-Plex supplement, next blood test is in 2 months hoping for good news. Thanks in advance for your help. in CT
Guest guest
I googled *anemia* and came up with this site which explains what it is all about and the treatment for it.... http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmedhealth/PMH0001586/ Then, the following site which explains what foods are good to replenish iron, folate, B, and minerals: http://www.livestrong.com/article/288208-b12-folate-iron/ = liver, dairy, eggs, meat, fish, dark green leafy vegs, asparagus, broccoli, cabbage, clams, steak, shrimp, poultry Shouldn't be too much trouble to get the right foods; seems to be lots of choices. Hope this is helpful...
Guest guest
Hi, Vitamin C always helps with absorption of non-heme (plant based) iron sources. So you can choose to take a Vitamin C pill with meals, or try to squeeze lemon, lime, or grapefruit juice into your water or beverages when you drink. Don't go over 1000mg of C per day or you may get loose stools. The link below gives info. on iron, and has several tables which list the iron content of various types of foods. Try to eat foods with higer iron status. If your cycles are heavy (sorry to any guys out there), you may need to increase your dosing those few days and perhaps the week after. Always be consistent with pills, and check levels in the blood with the doctor. Just as too little is not good, too much is bad as well. Please click the link to learn a little more. http://www.vrg.org/nutrition/iron.htm Heme vs. Non-heme Iron Iron is an essential nutrient because it is a central part of hemoglobin, which carries oxygen in the blood. Iron deficiency anemia is a worldwide health problem that is especially common in young women and in children. Iron is found in food in two forms, heme and non-heme iron. Heme iron, which makes up 40 percent of the iron in meat, poultry, and fish, is well absorbed. Non-heme iron, 60 percent of the iron in animal tissue and all the iron in plants (fruits, vegetables, grains, nuts) is less well absorbed. Vegan diets only contain non-heme iron. Because of this, iron recommendations are higher for vegetarians (including vegans) than for non-vegetarians. The RDA for iron is 14 milligrams per day for vegetarian men and for women after menopause, and 33 milligrams per day for women prior to menopause 1. Guest guest
Aloha, I had a problem with anemia in the past. My midwife told me to use a cast iron pan to cook in a couple of times a month and that the iron would take care of it. She was right. I use it once a week, on average, and have never again had a problem. Using the cast iron pan is better than supplements because it doesn't , umm, stop you up, which ive heard the pills do. Guest guest
Supplementing your diet for anemia related diseases is tircky and depends on the type of anemia that you have. I have an anemia called thalessemia, which cannot be treated with iron supplements. Not for the back up reasons, but because my body does not assimilate the iron and it would only make deposits in my liver which would make me a whole lot sicker than anemia every would. Instead, I go the leafy green route cause my body will assimilate iron from food stuffs. Be careful out there and always find out your specific quirk to the anemia issue and how best to pump up the iron. > > > > > ** > > > > > > > > > I would like advice on what I should put in my smoothie to help me with my > > > anemia. > > > My ferritin level is 2 and needs to get into the 70's, so I have got to > > > get busy.
