salt substitute/weight gain

I have been following the weight gain thread with interest as the

scale keeps rising even though I am trying to watch what I eat and

walking a ton (we have 4 dogs that need to be exercised A LOT). This

has always worked in the past but no longer. I know I have water

retention as my ankles feel like weights on the bottom of my legs

sometimes. I am on 400 mg of gleevec and have been since Feb 2008.

I eat very little sodium though and haven't for years because of my

husband's diabetes and high blood pressure. He has never liked the

salt substitute. We have a very extensive spice cabinet and use a

lot of different spices such as garlic powder, a mixture of garlic

and herbs (Mrs. Dash makes it), basil, Italian seasoning and so on.

My children don't really know what salt tastes like!! You might try

this instead of the salt substitute.

So the salt thing won't help me. Someone told me to drink a lot of

water to help lose the fluid so I have been trying. I think my one

downfall is cola (diet drinks don't agree with me and I don't like

them anyway). It is a godsend when I feel very nauseous.

Hope this helps and I will keep following weight tips from others.

It is driving me bonkers even though I would never give up my gleevec

because of the weight.

Jill, do you think you could adjust to a sparkling mineral water?

I don't like diet soft drinks either. They leave such a medicinal taste in your

mouth! But regular soft drinks pack on the pounds like nothing else. If you

could do without or cut down on them I think you might notice a big difference.

Hi all trying to fight off the pounds.

I too have gained 15 to 20 pounds since starting Tasigna. I am sick of

myself. Can't get into all my clothes and actually HAD to go out and buy a

size larger.

Finally-finally it is coming off.this is what I am doing.

NO CARBS or at least a lot less carbs.

We go to In- & -Out and I order a " No Carb Burger " it is fabulous. And Burger

King does one also. I eat no bread and stay away from my favorite thing -

chocolate. I also quit drinking cokes and juice. I only drink water. When we

go out I drink water with my dinner. I am amazed at how much I do not miss

the coke.

I have lost 5 pounds in the last two weeks and I already feel better.

This works for me and maybe it will work for some of you.

Just wanted to put in my two sense.,

Aloha Sharon

Hi Sharon,

Congratsw on the weight loss! I was doing a no-carb Atkins diet but didn't lose

anything at all. As a matter of fact, I gained a couple of pounds in 10 days.

I'm so glad this is working for you, though.

I do believe that the weight gain on all of our targeted meds has something to

do with the drugs. However, in addition to that we all have our own " bad "

eating habits to overcome plus our own genetics AND our own basic metabolism.

I am 62 years old, not too physically active but not sedentary, and healthy as I

can be with CML. Younger folks with a more active lifestyle are apt to lose

more than me anyway -- regardless of our meds. Everything in the mix seems to

work against me! :(

Ah, well, I'm glad you're making progress. I do watch my carbs but now that I'm

off Atkins I do eat some. Watching carbs, calories, sugar (always) and sodium

now.

Hi ,

I am 65 years old. I am glad this is working for me - at least right now it

is. I know part ofi it was I was eating anything I wanted. Sweets, pasta,

drinking starbucks mochas. Etc. etc. and I was not gaining. Then boom all of

a sudden it started coming on. And my appetite was horrendous!! I think that

is what the Tasigna did to me. Gave me a huge appetite.

I am an active 65 year old. I walk, I watch grandkids, and I still work. I

am a realtor here in the Bay Area. I will keep you posted on how the no or

less carbs works.

Good luck to you.

Cool! We should get together some time!

My weight has been steadily creeping up, even while I keep my calorie counts

low. But I have not tried eliminating carbs from my diet before. Here's hoping!

Hey, I lived in LA for 24 years prior to being diagnosed which sent me on a

countrywide move because of clinical trials. I do love SF, too.

I'm working, too, but just take care of 2 cats instead of grandkids! Much

easier and less active, I'm sure. :)

The big disappointment for me is not so much the weight gain which was no doubt

at least partially my fault. It's the inability to lose this tummy and torso

fat!

I do have an aerobic metabolism-boosting 10-min exercise that can be done in the

a.m. and then multiple times during the day. I think I'll be more " religious "

about that.

Smiles,

Hi again, Sharon!

Even if we do find out that targeted meds cause low metabolism, it doesn't mean

that we're off the hook in any way. It just means we'll understand everything

better. Of course, it's very possible that weight gain or low metabolism is not

being tracked by Novartis or BMS. We'll see, I guess. :)
