Hello Everyone,

Australias Talk Blood Cancers Chat Group (CML) and other blood

cancers have just launched recently a new website for young adults to

35 years - fantastic information - so all of us should have a look at

the website.

I just wanted to let you know there is a section in our newly

launched 'REVIVE' website regarding exercise and considerations

associated with low red blood cell counts etc. I have included the

link below.

Thanks for the link Sue. I talked about that quite a bit with my drs,

as I restarted the sports I like pretty much in the month after dx.

The main concerns were anemia and platelets. Exercising too much with

anemia can be dangerous for the heart and there's a risk of bruising,

or more seriously, internal bleeding with low platelets. Also I had

lost a lot of weight and was pretty weak, and I started exercising

gently to avoid joint/ligament/muscle injuries. I do think getting

back into physical shape helped me a lot both body and mind. 3 years

later I am exercising as much if not more than before dx, swimming 5

days a week, climbing every other day, and of course diving :-), and

so far I am doing good. I had a heart check up in May and everything

was fine. With the gleevec working better this last year all my counts

went a little bit lower, on the low edge of normal, and cuts and

scraps don't clot so well and are a little slow to heal, I am more

careful with infection. I am 41, dx in march 2005, on 400mg/day of

gleevec.
