Guest guest
Hi Amy, I understand somewhat what your going through, but not because I am not on Sprycel. However, long before I went on any of the Gleevec drugs, I started a anti-oxidant called: Coenzyme Q-10, which has been the right supplement that prevented me from having a heart murmur, and/or taking the antibiotics when you have to have your teeth cleaned. Which for me, was diagnosis when I did the Chemotherapy drug called Interferon. I thought I was really in bad shape, so I joined a health club, and did a route on weight equipment and hired a coach, who would educated me to bring back the strength in my body, and especially the heart. I soon became bored working on the equipment, but decided if I was going to live, I needed something to built back everything that was depleted from Interferon, and found at a Wellness Cancer Home, searching for other exercises like Tai Chi, and Yoga, that helped me feel more energized, and everybody I worked with was cancer patients of other types besides CML. Now you don't have to be this drastic, however, both exercises and anti-oxidants did help me. As it stand today, I do not belong to any health club, however, once every 2 years I have the EKG, and a battery of several test, which reveals to the Cardiologist that I no longer have the heart problems, because I am taking Coenzyme Q-10. I am only 135Lbs. women who is rather petite, only 5 " 3 " , I use 150mgs. of Coenzyme Q-10, every night before I sleep with AAcidophileswhich are probiotics with bifidius, for the stomach and adding the right bacteria to consume foods. I could not take yogurt, because as I got older I became lactose intolerance, so all dairy products and cheeses were removed, and I don't miss cows milk in the least! Now you can go into Internet and asked a question through ggogglesearch engine, like: how safe is Coenzyme Q-10? ...and you will find really good research which will tell you how this does correct or provide you with healthier arteries. As far as your problem with pancretitis, I stopped consuming any meat, ( even though I was buying my family hohormoneree, grgrass-fedeats) because I ran into Acute Pancretitis diagnosis, and was hospitalized. What I don't think people realize when they have a very serious condition in health is the way we use to consume our foods. All medication no matter what kind of medication your on, produces a very acidic environment, when your constantly consuming cows milk, or meat products. It is more beneficial to do some anti-oxidants when you are doing the cancer drugs, because they deplete the right things in our bodies to enable us and stay in a remission, that is my belief. I have also in the past had bouts of consuming white gluten, like bread, bagels, pie crust, anything that had wheat gluten. Today, I avoid consuming anything in the food group of white potato, white flour, white rice, due to the glycemic reaction and because due to age, we are prone to diabetes. To keep a healthier diet, I consumed more greener vegetables by steaming, sauteed, and stir fry. The only exception to meat is free-ranged turkeys, and no lunch meats because of susulfidesand I don't drink alcohol either. To prevent another epepisoder attack of pancretitis, I went to a book store and asked for everything about anti-oxidant, bought vitamin bibles, and read everything in sight to learn how to enable my body better with supplements and vitamins, while I was taking the cancer drug. I found food enzymes, which helped me digest the foods that I wanted to eat, and also neutralize the cancer drug so that my body would not be so acidic it would prevent me from consuming food, which is how we heal our body, and or how we nutritionally enable to live on these cancer drugs. It takes much research and more education to learn how we can best benefit with things, that enable us to take those cancer drugs, and stay in a remission. I hope you find another solution to help you work out the side-effects of Sprycel, and or if you think you can't manage Sprycel, talk to your Oncologist, and maybe change to Tasagna. There are many Cmlers who went to this drug instead of Sprycel, because of the negative black box warning about the heart damages. I hope you find something that works in your favor, in the mean time you are welcome to write to me again for anything else, as I thought I would be on a long journey of dealing with Gleevec. Just so you know I had relapse while I was taken off of Gleevec, for 1 week and when I had the acute pancretitis attacks. I was bumped up to 400mgs. of Gleevec, when the cancer return, however, I am back in remission again, so I work hard to keep myself stabled. I had gone to a larger Cml hospital, in New York City, Memorial Sloan Kettering, which gave me all the neccessary blood testings that my Chicago could not have done. It provided me with better tools to enable me to stay on Gleevec, despite the swelling when in contact with humidity, as changing my diet did provide better! Guest guest
Ann, I'm sorry to hear about your situation. When i was worried about possible heart problems I contacted Dr. Force by email in Philadelphia at Jefferson Hospital- I could probably find his email again if you can't locate it on the internet.. He was the researcher Novartis hired to see why the people had heart failure. He said the 10 were treated, survived and were able to remain on gleevec. If I remember they all had problems with the left ventricle. I had an echo done but my GP said you could have one done today and the problem could come up tomorrow. So I guess we should all be vigilant and pay attention to our bodies; and ask our docs about monitoring our hearts. Guest guest
thank you so much for any help you can give. i will be going in for a heart cath next week. they have found something wrong with the arteries surrounding the heart. the heart is still enlarged and i still have pericarditis, the inflammation in the sac. my cardio doctor needs to get in there with some die and may be able to shore up the arteries in question. i have been taking the nitro pills each day now and can only wait until i get this done. they stopped sprycel for a week because of prolong qt readings with the ekg. ever since i was released from the hospital from the congestive heart failure/pancreatitis my eyes have been unable to focus they will just blurr out. i went to my eye doctor and i have edema in the back of the eyes with what appears to large deposits of plac. a test to determine the cause of the edema will be run after the heart cath. ann grimm [ ] request for past articles Date: Saturday, September 20, 2008, 8:53 AM good morning group: this is a request to anyone that may have an article in " your archives " about gleevec, sprycel causing heart disease. i was in the hospital for two weeks fighting pancreatitis, followed by congestive heart failure. i had ekg at the hospital showing no signs of damage but had a stress test done and as i increase my activity and the heart rate goes up, the heart is struggling to pump enough blood. i have pleural effision in my left lung with pain at rest on my left side. any infomation would be appreciated. ann grimm dxd 10/2002 gleevec till 07 sprycel currently 140mg 48 yrs old
