Guest guest
I've had major problems with diarrhea for as long as I've had all the other symptoms. It's possible I had C diff the whole time. I had numerous ear infections as a child. Perhaps those antibiotics set me up for the C diff. But I had the worst episodes (shedding my intestinal lining along with what might as well have been motor oil) since my mino/tini/azithro combo in February. Tini, like Flagyl, works against C diff, but the funny thing is they don't reach notable concentrations in the colon (where C diff lives) unless you have diarrhea. I.e., C diff creates the diarrhea that allows tini/flagyl to reach the C diff itself. So just because I was on tini (which you might think would've protected me) in february doesn't mean the combo wasn't responsible. I didn't have diarrhea at the time, so it may have been that only the azithro/mino were actively decimating my colonic commensals. But this is just guessing. Like most every other condition it seems, scratch the surface of the C diff literature and you find medical incompetence underneath. Here's an exerpt from an email I sent someone on C diff: The commonly used test (ELISA) for C diff toxins is quite insensitive (as low as 64%). Unlike the Lyme wars, the GI researchers don't seem to even dispute how insensitive the test is, but it's much cheaper than the sensitive tests so it continues to be used clinically: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/query.fcgi? db=pubmed & cmd=Retrieve & dopt=AbstractPlus & list_uids=15673515 But perhaps the most interesting thing about C diff is that a lot of people are asymptomatic carriers and that it is the people who don't seroconvert adequately to the toxins that have the most problems: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/query.fcgi? db=pubmed & cmd=Retrieve & dopt=AbstractPlus & list_uids=8300199 It's also interesting that many Cdiffers complain of fatigue. Here's some quotes. You can find a lot more by using the search function. The worst part is a persistent achiness and fatigue. http://www.cdiffsupport.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php? t=1775 & highlight=fatigue It started after being off of vanco for abt 10 days, the " gearing up " symptoms prior to the major D were nausea, stomach cramps, fatigue, dizziness, and low grade fever(these are " typcial " signs for me). http://www.cdiffsupport.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php? t=2325 & highlight=fatigue I found out I have C-diff a few weeks ago, was treated once and now the C-diff is back. My glands below my ears are so swollen I though I had mumps. Is this normal for C-diff? Also, the fatigue is terrible. http://www.cdiffsupport.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php? t=2193 & highlight=fatigue I was going to the bathroom about twice a day, weak and fatigued. I called my primary care doctor, deciding to deal with the cost of the appointment. I saw her a few days later. She explained that my fatigue was indeed due to the Bacterial Colitis http://www.cdiffsupport.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php? t=436 & highlight=fatigue Unfortunately for me, getting rid of C diff did not alleviate my fatigue/brainfog, as would be implied by the above testimonials. Matt > > Wow. You really did have c. diff.! That's really dangerous. So glad they gave you vanco and it cleared up. Was it from taking a particular abx? > > Thanks for your thoughts on the chiari and csf, spinal taps, etc. Keep us apprised of what you learn. Wheldon has said on cpnhelp that the nitroimidazoles actually can paradoxically bring on C diff. Perhaps even (I forget, or else he just didn't say) when used alone. Guest guest
From what I understand -shedding the intestinal lining - as I did 5 years ago at the end of a bout with Salmonella - is pretty serious. But not totally a bad thing. (assuming you haven't had to be hospitalized for severe dehydration and electrolyte imbalance) It took me 6 or 8 months just to be able to eat normally again. I assume this was repopulation (that's how I treated it). And I saw the intestinal lining - oh my god- was bright orange and very gelatinous (sorry you guys with a queezy stomach). The only good thing about this- if you can call it good- is that everything- including the bad bugs usually come out with that lining. Matt.. are you severely underweight.? Do you think your intestines are now healthy? Barb > > I've had major problems with diarrhea for as long as I've had all > the other symptoms. It's possible I had C diff the whole time. Guest guest
Hey Barb I haven't studied the mechanics of this for different pathogens, but I think Salmonella and C diff may do it differently. Here's a brief description for C diff: " With advanced disease, the pseudomembranes may coalesce and eventually slough, leaving large denuded areas. " http://www.emedmag.com/html/pre/gic/consults/061503.asp C diff operates only in the colon. I'm guessing that Salmonella covers much more real estate. I only lost about 5 pounds. I sloughed off lining multiple times. They were reminiscent of jelly fish, though exceptionally fragile. I tried to save one to show the doc (who didn't believe me; I had to refer myself to a GI specialist and pay out of pocket) but color (brownish yellow, not the orange you saw; the tissue itself was mostly white) would leach out of it over time and I changed the water it was suspended in. Each time the water caused vortexing and would shred the sample into smaller pieces. I'm sure it was just a single, exceptionally thin monolayer of cells and couldn't hold together in large sheets when disturbed. I think my intestines have long healed from the C diff toxins, but I think chronically ill folk have problems with their intestines independent of C diff. Guest guest
Thank you all for sharing your thoughts, experiences with c diff. The 2 antibiotics are really messing up my tummy...have 6 days to go for 1 and 5 for the other. Sue, it is always sweet that you remember me. I do still write occasionally, but this year has required my attention mostly for my daughter's struggle with MS and other serious struggles she has had. I think of us 'old timers' : ) who have been here, at least off and on, for many years. Any of you, I would welcome personal email at mercycove at comcast.net.I think of a, Heidi Steppe Horeau, Kathy in Ok, Judy Indiana/Georgia, Pat in Oregon, yikes my dear sweet friend in Florida whom I am completely spacing her name I am sorry...she had an amputation, oh my gosh I apologize if I have 'brain cloud' with any of your names. : ( There are so many more! But I absolutely carry you in my heart. We all went through so much with each other. Always.. Cheryle aka Tess -- " The path before all of us sometimes is strewn with shards of glass and this world does not always provide strong, protective shoes. So as the poem " Footprints " says, God will carry me, when I cannot carry myself. He loves me enough to do that for me...I surrender this struggle and am crawling up into His arms. Guest guest
LOL Jolene....love the brain part..I am so happy how the MTX has helped you. Thanks for your support....MTX is just an overall evil drug that helps!!! .....all we can do is offer suggestions, but ultimately it is what works best for that individual. I had talked to someone who tried the all at once before bed and spent hours throwing up , nauseous, etc....but was fine the next day....so I guess it's all about experimenting, knowing what you can and can't take, and taking something from the many suggestions presented to you on this list. The reason I do mine the way I do, is that my stomach is a mess , bleeding ulcer, half a colon, etc. I don't want nausea, vomiting, or anything to upset that volcano in any way! Guest guest
Lottie, Thank you for the information about c diff. It is becoming very common to catch c diff during a visit or stay in a hospital. I saw a segment on abc news about this last week. Unfortunately, I caught c diff last year when I was in the hospital for an infection following outpatient surgery. It was awful! It took me two rounds of flagyl to get rid of it. I think that was about 20 days. I lost so much weight and was so sick for a long time. I'll try to include a link to the abc news site here. If it doesn't work you can google abc news c diff. _ABC News: Intestinal Infections on the Rise_ (http://abcnews.go.com/Health/story?id=6223223 & page=1) I hope everyone else is able to avoid this problem. in NY **************One site has it all. Guest guest
Hi, I did not get a chance to see the original post, but I have a lot of experience with Cdiff. Both of my elderly parents have passed this nasty infection back and forth several times. It is very aggressive and can be life threatening. Diarrhea, stomach pain, weight loss, and nausea are all big symptoms. Antibiotic use is usually a precursor although not if you contracted it from someone else. For my mom the diarrhea was profuse. She had several in the span of an hour. She got dehydrated and weak. There are several things that do help. Allimed( a powerful garlic extract) is good for cdiff. Culturelle(2 per day) and florastor( up to 6 per day) show effectiveness against cdiff. Personally I would combine the 2 because my parents did not clear the cdiff with just florastor as their probiotic. My mom is doing significantly better on the culturelle/florastor combo, Cholestyramine is also good for cdiff. It helps to bind the toxins out of your system. It is a script, but it is non antibiotic. I agree with the kefir suggestion as well. Kefir is very powerful and great against many gut infections. Be careful with the probotics and kefir though. You can get die off and diarrhea form them when you first start building up. It can be a catch twenty two. Hope that this helps. If you are really ill, do not try to avoid the ER or antibiotics. I have seen cdiff almost kill my parents. It is not something to be taken lightly. Peggy P.S. Spores can live on surfaces for weeks. Alcohol based cleaners to not touch it. Although I am not a fan of bleach. It is necessary to scour all hard surfaces to prevent reinfection.

" Jeannie - it is an infection (I think bacterial) that people get when they are on certain types of antibiotics, especially if for a long time or at high doses. I believe it is common in hospitals, esp. when people are on IV antibiotics. It can be somewhat prevented I believe with probiotics. It causes major diarrhea, and can be life threatening if not caught, diagnosed, and treated properly - usually done with (yes you guessed it) more antibiotics - Jen

Guest guest
The full name is clostridium difficile. Per Mayo's site: Clostridium difficile, often called C. difficile or " C. diff, " is a bacterium that can cause symptoms ranging from diarrhea to life-threatening inflammation of the colon. Illness from C. difficile most commonly affects older adults in hospitals or in long term care facilities and typically occurs after use of antibiotic medications. deb > > Never heard of C Diff. Guest guest
I had no idea that there was such serious stuff to be aware of. I'm starting a binder (book person) and writing all that I'm learning in that. It amazes me what this illness entails with all the other illness you can get some serious. ....then you have the medications, the supplements to learn about, the herbs, on and on it goes. Thank you for sharing your knowledge, it's appreciated. Jeannie
