Guest guest
Hi , Have you had your thyroid checked? An underactive thyroid can effect your ability to lose weight. Take care, Tracey > > Hi All, > > I finally heard back regarding my question to Bristol-Meyers regarding the possibility that Sprycel lowers our metabolism making it easy to gain weight and hard to lose it. Well, I heard a pro form answer that the only way we might gain weight because of Sprycel is through fluid retention. It indicates that there's been no investigation of Sprycel and metabolism. > > I intend to follow up on this with my onc at the trial because I really do believe there is something to it and that BMS and Novartis simply haven't really studied the issue. I may be wrong, of course, but there's a lot of anecdotal evidence. > > FOr myself, I'm eating a normal, watchful diet that is low fat, low salt and as high in fiber as I can make it through eating bran and vegetables and fruits. I'm not gaining any weight. Since I've quit " dieting " my focus is not on food and I find that I'm actually eating less. > > Smiles, > > >
Guest guest
I'm going to do that, Tracey. I had an underactive thyroid with a previous medication (unrelated to CML) and it may be playing a role here. If that is true (don't know yet) then that's important to know. Thanks, Tracey! Guest guest
My Granny had been taking Gleevec for a year and all of a sudden she got very weak. I took her to the emergency room and they found out that she has an overactive thyroid and they told us that the thyroid controls all sorts of thing in your body. In her case, she would have eventually had a heart attack. But, it also controls your metabolism and if I were you, I would get the thyroid checked. All they have to do is take some blood. Guest guest
Hi everyone. Been awhile but I wanted to comment. I had a very similar experience with the Sprycel: I had a huge tummy and I would look 6 months pregnant. I think I gained around 10 lbs which I eventually lost with little dieting AFTER I went back on Gleevac. Sometimes my weight would bounce around though. I also had some bad gnawing belly pain that was unrelenting. I finally went off the Sprycel because of the pain. I kept wondering about it. My vague impression was that my gut was not moving like it should...quite possibly just a lot of fluid somewhere... At one point they couldn't hear any bowel sounds when the pain was really bad. Didn't get any imaging like I should have though cause of ins etc. I think it has something to do with motility and fluid accumulation. (not necessarily ascites...anyone get a GI opinion on it? That's a bummer...somethings up with this... > > I agree with you , I have a bowling ball stomach and have never ever in my life had this sort of problems..Like I told you before.
