Guest guest
I was taking one prenatal vitamin, one multi vitamin, and one iron supplement (Chromagen Forte). When my OB checked my iron level, it was to high. So she had me quite taking the Chromagen. To those of you that do have to take an iron supplement, you might ask your doctor about Chromagen Forte. It's a liquid filled capsule and should be easier for us to absorb. in OK

Guest guest
We crush a tablet for one of our kids, and the other two get liquid form. If your child can take the tablet whole it probably wouldn't discolor their teeth. Even with the tablet crushed, I find that her teeth are less discolored than the kids that take the liquid. Guest guest
I read that if you brush the teeth right after taking the iron, that will help prevent discoloration. --- what can you do to help the discoloration of the teeth In @y..., M Pappadia <pappadia@j...> wrote: > We crush a tablet for one of our kids, and the other two get liquid form. > If your child can take the tablet whole it probably wouldn't discolor > their teeth. Guest guest
Nothing - it goes away when the iron supplement is stopped. If your child can swallow a pill, that probably wouldn't discolor their teeth. Guest guest
True, but it's prescribed because I'm anemic. The diet was bringing my hemoglobin up, but not fast enough. You may be right. This is a hard call. Low iron causes real problems, but also reduces oxidative stress and the body dumps iron to control that when toxic with other metials it can't dump. Guest guest
I too was anemic, but Dr. Rutledge prescribed an Iron prescription called 'Chromagen Forte' (or generic Ferrogels Forte). This is faster than supplements. It took about 3 months for my iron levels to increase and show up on my blood work. Try this is may help. I am still taking this Iron prescription. Hope this info helps. S in Florida Re: Iron supplements i am 46 and became anemic.... you do NOT want to go there!! Guest guest
Hi, Im 3 1/2 years post op, I could not tolerate any of the iron, it basiclly made my stomach cramp, my bowels stop moving, and sometimes it would my me throw up.I tried 2 over the counter kinds, and 2 Rx, I finally had to take it with ivs.My blood count was so low I was passing out, after 8 treatments, and 3500.00 later, I feel normal again, the doc said they will check it every few months, but the treatments would contiue to work for a couple of years, hopefully. Guest guest
I'm 2 years out and am taking six to eight ferrous sulfate (65mg) tablets per day. I was diagnosed as amenic almost a year ago. I took 3 tablets for six months after I was diagnosed but then I bumped up to my present level about three months ago (my blood tests showed no improvement with just three tablets per day). I have no side effects whatsoever so I'm wondering if the 6-8 tablets are being absorbed. I'm having my iron levels checked once more in about a week and if they're not up, then I'm going to need the intravenous treatments. 1/12/04 246.5/160 laura saia <todds340wedge@...> wrote: Hi, Im 3 1/2 years post op, I could not tolerate any of the iron, it basiclly made my stomach cramp, my bowels stop moving, and sometimes it would my me throw up.I tried 2 over the counter kinds, and 2 Rx, I finally had to take it with ivs.My blood count was so low I was passing out, after 8 treatments, and 3500.00 later, I feel normal again, the doc said they will check it every few months, but the treatments would contiue to work for a couple of years, hopefully. Guest guest
I understand the COST involved, but if your insurance covers the infusions, I can't recommend them strongly enough. There are iron " shots " which I have heard are not fun and stain, but trust me, Iron Infusions are a no brainer as far as I am concerned. I felt TERRIBLE, tired all the time, exhausted, hateful, just not good....I can tell when I need them usually because I crave red meat and iron rich vegetables...really weird how the body works when you start listening to it. The infusions are a QUICK fix, your numbers bounce b ack almost immediately, like in a few days you feel better. There is a RISK of allergic reaction, it does NOT involve a blood product, so no risk of Hep C or HIV...They do a sample dose to test for an allergic reaction and that is it. It takes a while depending upon how low you are, it can take several hours. Usually given in a cancer center or at a hospital as an outpatient. I go back every 4 months to keep an eye on it and end up with an infusion once or twice a year. My thoughts, I would do it every week to stay at 150 pounds instead of 380! No complaints here. Guest guest
Hi Louise, I've had the same problem with iron pills plus the inability to actually absorb any iron from them - all that suffering for nothing! My GP has now prescribed me Galfer Syrup (flavoured with chocolate and peppermint flavouring). This is Ferrous Fumarate to be taken as 2 X 5ml spoonfuls twice a day. Each 5ml contains 140 mg of ferrous fumarate equivalent to 45mg of ferrous iron. This means I'm taking 180 mg each day as opposed to 600mg in my previous ineffective iron pills Hopefully it will be better absorbed.Last year my ferritin level was 18. I managed to get it up to 30 by taking spatone so I know that I can absorb liquid iron without stomach problems. Spatone was just too costly to take on a long term and my endo and GP said I needed to get my iron levels up much quicker than I have been doing. A lot of the iron pills contain substances in the filler - eg-lactose, maize starch, etc - which people can be sensitive to. Also, they have a tendency to contain pork or beef gelatine which rules them out if you are veggie, Hindu, Moslem or Jewish or anxious about BSE - so WHY is bl**dy gelatine in everything?!! Galfer syrup is vegan but can turn your teeth and tongue black. (Someone else on this forum recommended using a straw.) Don't know how effective it is yet because my blood test is due in February. Still, my guts feel heaps better! Tracey Sent from - a smarter inbox.
Guest guest
Hi Louise, I used to take Florisene (from nutricentre) which would not upset your stomach. I stopped this recently after being on it for years because I was trying to reduce my pill costs & I have moved on to something cheaper which is Source Naturala advanced ferrochel (iherb.com), which is also supposed to be easy on your stomach, although I find it not as easy as the other. Some people take 6 a day of this, but I have worked my way up to 3, which is also what I took of florisene (when I could afford it). Val I've just had a blood test and managed to get them to test the ferritin and it's still only 16 (it was 12), and I notice they've increased the range: 22-200 it used to be 13-200. I've been taking iron that I get on prescription (ferrous fumarate) but it has always upset my stomach so I'm probably not taking it as regularly as I should. Has anyone got the same problem and does anyone know of anything else I can try? TIA,Louise
Guest guest
Thanks both. I've had Iron problems for years and I've tried the Galfer syrup (and had the black teeth/tongue thing). I can't buy anything off the net but I wondered about the Spatone. How expensive is it? And can you get it from Boots ect. Also I think someone once mentioned it's not all that strong. Thanks, Louise.
Guest guest
Many thanks for this information Val - it is very useful as finding a really good iron supplement is not easy. Some people have problems in tolerating some brands. Do you have a link please to save me looking this up.We could do with putting good sources for supplements in our Files so it makes it easier for our members. Luv - Sheila Just wanted to say that my ferritin has gone up to 88, which is very high for me, because it had always been very low despite supplementing since the beginning of 2003. I have changed my iron to Source Naturals advanced ferrochel (iherb.com), from about 6 months ago as this was loads cheaper than the one | had been taking, and I have been taking 3/day. I guess I can now reduce this to 2/day. Val No virus found in this incoming message.Checked by AVG Free Edition. Guest guest
http://www.iherb.com/ProductDetails.aspx?c=1 & pid=1021 & at=0 As you can see they are very cheap $6.04 for 180 tabs. I tend to buy a year's supply at once. I always choose DHL for transport as they are very quick & do not delay delivery to wait for payment of VAT. I receive an invoice for this later - anything from a few days to several months. And their charge for this is very low in comparison with all other transport people I have come across. They took about 3 days for delivery last time, which is very quick from the US. I also like the B100 & Ester C (Now brand) from this suplier - very cheap & this raised my B12 blood result, which did not happen when I was taking Lamberts. They also do melatonin & most of my other potions. Val Many thanks for this information Val - it is very useful as finding a really good iron supplement is not easy. Guest guest
Dear Vicki, I thought I might be low on iron since I needed so many transfusions, so I ordered 5 bottles of iron. Every time I took it, it made me sick. I hope I can return it because I won't be using it again. Some said it caused diarrhea, but I thought it caused the opposite. Some people (like my husband and son) cannot absorb iron, so I buy vitamins without iron. Nothing is either black or white, is it?
