Hi all

I was told by my oncologist that Sprycel has 10 times the chemo effect of

Glivec. That's why most people who don't get enough of a response on Glivec

have had to turn to Sprycel, which would make sense.

Is this true?

In vitro Dasatinib (brand name Sprycel) is said to be up to 300 times more

potent than imatinib (Gleevec), but that's not the reason it may be a

solution for people that fail Gleevec, and dose limiting toxicity is well

below the concentration corresponding to 300 times imatinib. The main reason

is that Sprycel is active against more mutations of the leukemia cells

(BCR-ABL cells). The other reason is the side effects are different and

people that are or become intolerant to gleevec may do well with Sprycel.

Same thing with Tasigna (nilotinib). But these two newer drugs don't have

yet the safety record of Gleevec, so if Gleevec is working and side effects

are ok it's still a better bet. And financially, the pattern for imatinib

(the molecule in Gleevec) will be over sooner (around 2012 ?) and it will be

available as generic for a fraction of the cost of Gleevec. With the current

trend in health insurance to push cancer drugs to less covered tiers it may

be a big factor for many patients.

Marcos.
