Guest guest
Great recipes! What is the shelf life of the shaving creams? Also, I am a little confused about how much of the scent blend you add to the first recipe. It says 20 drops of the blend, yet the blend equals less than 20 drops of different oils? Also, how do you know how much of an e.o. is enough/too much to add to a recipe so it is not dangerous for the skin? Sorry, I am a novice to this! Thanks! Guest guest
Hi : No apologies necessary...we all had to start somewhere! :-) I haven't made the shaving cream yet, but I suspect it would probably have a shelf life similar to an unpreserved lotion. In other words, a preservative of some sort should be used. (ok, I have no experience here...can someone suggest what type and percentage of preservative would work?) For the scent blends, the recipes require the absolute minimum number of drops (or " parts " ) for each oil. Once you make the " test batch " and decide you like it, it can be made into larger quantities by converting the " drops " or " parts " into millilitres, teaspoons, ounces, etc. Just be sure to keep the measurement the same throughout the recipe. You can then bottle your signature scents and use them as needed in the recipes! Generally, essential oils should be kept at a dilution of around 5 (for the strong or spicy oils) to a maximum of 10 drops (for the lighter oils like citrus) per ounce of product (lotions, creams, massage and body oils, powders and soaps). A maximum amount of 10 drops per 2 oz. product for bath salts, fizzies, etc. Avoid using very sensitizing oils when making products that are applied directly to the skin: (cinnamon, benzoin, lemon to name just a few). If a question arises if a particular oil is safe to use, I recommend these sites: http://www.andybarson.dial.pipex.com/oildata.htm http://members.tripod.com/~oilprince/essential.htm http://www.imm.org.pl/bird/list1.htm http://www.cp.duluth.mn.us/~cappy90/news.htm > Great recipes! Guest guest
Cat, Good stuff!! The only problem is that you forgot the bentonite clay in your shaving soap recipe. Without it, the blade(s) won't slide over the face as well. Guest guest
Hi Cat! It's difficult to find almond oil here in the Philippines. What would be a good substitute? Guest guest
Any bland vegetable or nut oil like apricot or peach kernel, jojoba, avocado, olive, castor, etc. could be used. I didn't realize that almond was in short supply over there! :-) Cat > It's difficult to find almond oil here in the Philippines. What would > be a good substitute? Guest guest
I am wondering if anyone has a recipe for making an after shave that would be as close as possible to Wild Country. Guest guest
Cat- Your blends always sound so beautiful, I always save them to experiment with later. Thanks for always being so generous with them. I only want to offer one caution to those not familiar with safety issues and essential oils - both Peru Balsam and Benzoin are BIG skin sensitizers, and shouldn't be used on the skin, and any Bergamot EO should me marked 'bergaptene free' if it is used on the skin. Guest guest
They say that if it is in a 'wash off' product that it would be okay. I did specifically ask that question myself just because I have always avoided the sensitizers even in soaps, etc. HTH- Lynda silverstoli@... wrote: >In a message dated 10/21/02 11:21:46 AM Central Daylight Time, >lynda@... writes: > > >>and any Bergamot EO should me marked >>'bergaptene free' if it is used on the skin. >> > >If the Bergamot or other citrus eo's are used in soap, is this a problem too? > I have stayed away from them because I wasn't sure. > Kay and Stoli >Please visit our Soap for Hope site >Selling soap for weimaraner rescue > <A HREF= " http://www.weim.net/stoli/ " >Soap for hope</A> > > >

Guest guest
Hi : Excellent suggestion! How much would you recommend? I have revised that recipe so many times....I originally used 1/2 cup shredded (commercial) castile soap and 1 cup water that was whipped in the blender into a frothy concoction that set up in the mug. People wrote and said theirs never set up. I found out that they were using their homemade soap in the recipe, which would contain more water and glycerine than the commercial soap I used, so I reduced the amount of water to 1/2 cup, then to 1/4 cup. Using the bentonite, I might increase the water back up to 1/2 cup. Aloe vera gel might be a nice addition too. I'm going to tweak the recipe some more...in the meantime, let me know how yours turns out! :-) Cat > Good stuff!! The only problem is that you forgot the bentonite clay in your shaving > soap > recipe. Guest guest
A Tbs/lb of oils would be okay. I've heard that a tsp works, but decided on the Tbs.
