The good, the bad and the ugly.

Contrary to earlier studies, beta caretone supplements have more recently been

shown to increase lung cancer risks and vitamin E has been found to increase

heart diesease risks. (Isn't that a surprise)?

The good news: Vitamin D may reduce the risk of colorectal cancer.

Dr. Mayer suggests that supplements are no subsitute for a healthy diet.

You can visit www.health.gov/dietaryguidelines for more.

He also says to skip those megadose vitamins unless directed by your doctor.

His suggestion for calcium and D is to take vitamin D doses of 400 IU for people

under 50 and 800 IU for those 50 and older. Calcium doses of l,000 mg. daily

for people under age 50 and 1200 mg. for those 50 and older.

I found this information in my son's company's newsletter and thought I would

pass it on, as some of it is contrary to what we have been led to believe.

Diabetes PHD (Personal Health Decisions) is a free online site that can help you

calculare and lower your risk for diabetes and other health conditions linked to

diabetes. They take into consideration all of your medications, history, and

lifestyle and let you see how losing weight, not smoking and getting regular

foot exams can lower your risk for diabetes and its related complications like

heart attack, stroke, kidney disease and eye and foot problems. Log on to

www.diabetes.org/diabetesphd/default.jsp for more information.

If you need help remembering to take a daily medication, send yourself a pop-up

note through your email or daily planner. Set an alarm on your cell phone or

ask your voice mail service to call you with a reminder. Sticky notes all over

will help, also, even on your steering wheel.

FYI,

Lottie
