Guest guest
> So are you going to make the sprouter or just write > the plans? Well, I have a lot more plans around the house than I do hydroponic systems, geodesic structures, greenhouses, composting toilets, and human-powered-vehicles. ;-) Plans first, then a test system. Right now, I will be going as cheap as possible (until a new job/ further funding comes available). I have seen some interesting ideas, but I haven't picked one as a final. I have my " fastest to build/slap together " in my head, and I'll give a run-down in a later post this morning (hey, it's almost 1 am!). > I ordered the plans from Val and got so > many good ideas that it was well worth it even if I > never make an automatic sprouter. (But I will make > one. Just trying to figure out the cheapest route.) Ditto. What does she use to time/ control her misting? > I spray manually with a pump sprayer several times a > day. That's one way. ;-) But, my next job will probably be outside the home, and I will have more than enough on my hands bringing up another hydro system, working, taking care of the kids, etc. Automatic is the best way to go for me. > And no mold for once. Tell me how you control the mold? The only thing I've read is, air movement helps prevent mold. Of course, air movement also carries moisture away, but that's why automatic operation is " the bom' " . The example she shows looks like there wouldn't be enough air flow w/out forced air (fans), but that is one more level of complexity (and more power requirements). So, how's it done? Does anybody have an Evergreen? Do they need to be attached to a faucet in order to water sprouts? Can water come from a nearby jug? What quantities of sprouts do they yield? Guest guest
Hi , I live close to the Tribest Co. and have made friends with the staff. If you want the sprouters fixed let me know and I'll put you in contact with them. If you don't want the machines anymore, send them to me and I'll have them fixed and will donate them to someone in my garden club that would like to have them. ew Automatic sprouters Date: Tue, 22 May 2007 13:12:34 -0000 My two Tribest sprouters are broken now. Guest guest
Automatic sprouters Date: Tue, 22 May 2007 13:12:34 -0000 My two Tribest sprouters are broken now. And, I am wondering how the Ever Green ( I believe that is the name) fares as an automatic sprouter. .............I really like mine. I've had 2 used ones for 2 yrs. I really like sprouting and automatic sprouters take over nicely in my busy life. ...............ditto Does anybody have an Evergreen? ..........I have 2. Do they need to be attached to a faucet in order to water sprouts? ...........no. I don't have the counter space for that so I put them on a buffet near the front door, but I stack them as 2 individual units with 2 drain tubes into 2 gallon jars on the floor, instead of them being connected to drain together etc. Can water come from a nearby jug? ......... absolutely. I use a funnel and big jug to fill, usually once a day before I go to sleep. I like to let it run down in the unit as much as possible so as not to have any 'old' water left in with the 'new' water I'm adding in. Depending on the size of the drain jugs would depend on how often you would need to dump them. What quantities of sprouts do they yield? ............ each container growing space in a 'regular tray' is about 12.5 " x 2 1/4 " . Then 5 trays fit in each unit. The idea is that in 5 days the sprouts would be ready. So you put seeds (no soaking required) in one container and into the unit, next day add another and move the previous one over. Now you have 2. 3rd day add another one with seeds and move the other 2 over. By the time all 5 are in there, when you go to add the 6th one, keep moving them over and take the 'ready' one out etc. So if you continued like this, you would have 1 tray ready each day. ......if you consume more sprouts than that in a day, you could in fact plant ALL 5 containers at the same time, but then they would all be ready at the same time too and your next crop would need 5 days to grow. So you could have more than 1 unit if you are a huge sprout eater. I really don't need 2 for our needs, but I like it as I'm experimenting with wheatgrass right now... which did awesome until day 5 or 6- but I think I had the timers on to water too often.... once I took it out, sprayed the undermatt with 3% peroxide - the slimyness disappeared and I left it out on the counter to continue to grow. Of course then the cat slept on it!! so I have no end result to juice. ;-( ...... I don't have anything else to compare it to in terms of automatic sprouters but that has been my experience so far. ......... They recommend that you put it through a disinfecting cycle after 1 or 2 full crops (can't remember) with bleach I think. But I have found using 10-20% hydrogen peroxide solution seems to work just fine. In between crops if it is muggy hot weather season I also just spray the inside with a 3% solution quickly but quickly take out my sprouts while doing it and then put them back in. Also when I harvest my sprouts, I also put them in a bowl with a little peroxide to rinse the hulls off etc. ........maybe I'm too careful, but with little kids, I want to be sure I'm not 'growing' anything other then sprouts ;-) hth Canada Thank you for your all your honest answers.
