Guest guest
Before my achalasia was bad I used to get severe heartburn. Initially antacid used to work, but it soon stopped having an effect. I tended to get it more often at night, around 2-3am. At some point I think it stopped being heartburn, but spasms, although not knowing what was happening to me I'm not sure when. When my achalasia got very bad I stopped getting it very often, as my whole digestive system was pretty much inactive. After the dilation I had about a year ago, I now get spasms at least every week. I find that drinking a little milk or something else, or perhaps a little food helps, even if it just sits in the oesophagus. However, it is hell when I get them sitting in class or at work where I have no access to any food or drink, and have to wait an hour or so in agony for it to pass. Sometimes I also feel tension in my oesophagus, like my throat is tight - perhaps this is a minor spasm? I also find I tend to get them more severely when my eating habits change - if I go from a period of eating very little to trying to force a lot of food down, or vice versa. When I go for a run this tends to irritate it also. Others in this group have mentioned levsin for spasms, but I am yet to try this. Hope I have helped somewhere in this babble Lynley
Guest guest
, I too have had problems with spasms. They seem to have gotten worse since my last dilatation. My spasms seem to be different all the time. I get them where they start in my jaw also. Most of the time they are in the middle of my chest. I have been trying Levsin for the last few weeks. That has been working wonderful. I would wake up in the middle of the night having spasms that hurt so bad I felt like going to the hospital. They would last 2-3 hours. The next morning I felt like I ran a marathon. The Levsin I was prescribed is a little too weak so I just take two. The pain goes away within 5 min. I hope you will give this a try. spasm Hi, I was reading through the messages and I feel it is our desire to educate ourselves and to have insight from others who know more than most of the doctors as to what is available for this condition that have led us to find this site. Having said that I am on to my 2nd week since my op. and am happy to say that I am doing well as far as eating goes. I am now on oatmeal and mashed potatoes as well as fresh juices and soups. I have no regurgitation, and had heartburn once when I eat a bit of scrambled egg, my remedy for this was a cup of hot lemon and honey which worked very well. My question that have is about spasms, they have become more frequent since the op. For me they often start in my mouth, it feels like something is squeezing my upper teeth or lower jaw, then the pain travels down my throat to my stomach and back, Does any one else have an experience like this?? the thing that does help me is drinking cold water as soon as I feel one coming on. The other thing for me is that I will often get a spasm during the night which will wake me up or in the early morning, anyone else find that there are times that are better or worse for them?? Guest guest
Yes, quite often I will wake early, around 2 or 3 in the morning with spasms. I get up and take a slice of bread and a glass of water and the spasm stops almost immediately. Guest guest
I got spasms very like yours all the time for the first year. I found the very best way to deal with them was a soup spoonful of plain yogurt. Instant releif. I still get them about once a week. Especially at night. I do get them in my mouth too. In fact for the first while I figured it was a toothache from an open tooth Ive had for a couple of years. I figured that the pain in my chest was from the tooth draining. Well such is the way of denile. Aili It wasn't until I came here that I realized that it was a symptom. > > Does any one else have an experience like this?? > the > > thing that does help me is drinking cold water as > > soon as I feel one coming on. Guest guest
I get that also - someone suggested it's gas shooting through your system. When that happens I found the only thing that works is MYLANTA gulped down right away. It may or may not work for you. Warmest regards, Elena
Guest guest
I started on a new medication today called Nexium. It is supposed to reduce the acid that is on the sphincter which may cause the spasms. Is anyone else on this medication? Thanks for all the feedback. Please keep it coming. Guest guest
I don't get chest pain spasms much anymore. I used to and still occasionally get a wierd pain in my jaw and neck that now I'm thinking may be related. Its not a pain really, just a wierd, uncomfortable feeling, generally toward the right side (it doesn't seem like regular neck-muscle pain). No mouth pain though. > I got spasms very like yours all the time for the > first year. I found the very best way to deal with > them was a soup spoonful of plain yogurt. Instant > releif. Guest guest
Hi! Yes my husband experiences spasms after drinking beer. He is not a big drinker, but once in a while socially he does drink. Beer was one of the first things that my husband noticed he could not swallow when he started with his swallowing difficulties. He was on a business trip and they had all ordered a beer at dinner one night, and he said that it absolutely ruined his evening trying to take the first sip. Now almost two years post surgery, he is able to eat and drink everything, but he definitely notices that he has spasms if he has had a couple of beers. > > Does anyone ever experience spasm's a day or so after drinking > alcohol, beer wine etc...? Guest guest
Dear Carolyn, I am truly sorry that you are having a problem. I would be upset, too. When I had pneumonia on Sprycel, I could inhale, but not exhale. That scared me so, I called an ambulance. The doctor tried to make fun of me and said, " What's this with the ambulance? " I told him I was a charter member of the ambulance service and paid my dues faithfully for over 30 years and knew they had oxygen on board, so why couldn't I use it. Besides the EMT heard my chest rattle and told the dispatcher that I had pneumonia. He shut up, because I had seen him about my breathing problems, and he said he never heard anything. He did the same thing to Jimmy and when was summoned to the hospital to see Jimmy, he was embarrassed and said he had never heard anything in his chest before that time. I got another doctor to admit him and he told me he was losing his vital signs. He is NOT our doctor anymore. The last time I took penicillin was just before Jimmy and I got married. I had my wedding dress on a hangar in my bedroom and the doctor (they made house calls then) was admiring it, but he looked at my body and I had broken out in hives the size of a quarter. It was from penicillin for strep throat. He said if you had hives on the outside, you certainly could have them on your organs. We went ahead with the wedding and were on our honeymoon when the doctor called and asked my mother how I was. He said he was surprised that I revived enough to go through with the ceremony. I hope your doctor prescribes something else for y ou that works, and congratulations for kicking CML to the curb. Take care of your pipes and don't be afraid to speak up for your needs. Blessings, Lottie
