splenda or sucralose can have unpleasant gastric side effects.

Deus -

Can you elaborate? I ate tons of Splenda when I was on a lower-carb

diet and never had any noticeable side effects. I still use it in

decaf coffee and on grapefruit. The biggest side effect I've noticed

is my wallet shrinking! :)

Too much stevia can make you go number 2 (this is the PC version)

alot more than usual <hehe>.

it even warns you on the label with some of the products, that it may

have a laxative effect if too much of the product is ingested at one

time ;>)

HI Vicki,

I use Stevia extract by the brand name NOW in my teas once in a while. I even

bought a small plant and dried the leaves, but was to lazy to process them, LOL.

;) Here is a website that has some questions/answers to stevia. Seems it's

safe for diabetics. ;)

Love,

I have never used the fresh plant or the green powder, however I do use the

bitter. I use the tip of a teaspoon for a bowl of cereal. Also, you can cook

with it.

I'm a diabetic and use stevia for almost everything. I do like it, although it

tends to taste a little too " green " sometimes. I began using it hoping to go

all-natural, but the processed stevia does not have the same plant-y taste. Oh

well. It does add a nice color to soap, too. :)

I agree, Rose . The processed Stevia seems to have the same bitterness that

saccharin does. It's not pleasant.

and everyone else who responded to my question,

Thank you very much for the information. I will forward that web site to her

so she can learn what to do with her plant...

Check out the Center For Science in the Public Interest's Guide to

Food Additives.

http://www.cspinet.org/reports/chemcuisine.htm

They give Splenda (sucralose) a thumbs-up as safe and stevia a big red

X for concerns about it interfering with fertility and carbohydrate

absorption. Aspartame, saccharine, Ace-K also got the big red X.

Lately I've been using sugar as a sweetener. Since you're having such

serious trouble maintaining your weight, you might want to consider

it. Or maybe the splenda/sugar blend. At least it has some calories.

> Are there any adverse effects to consuming a lot of Stevia? I have been using

that instead of Splenda, but I use ALOT of it and wondering if that's ok or if

I should cut back.

stevia is labeled as a dietary supplement - not yet approved by the FDA

to be labeled as an artificial sweetener. It is the extract of the

stevia leaf. It has a bitter flavor - some people use it often - I

can't seem to use more than a little sprinkle before if ruins my

coffee. :)

how about agave nectar? The glycemic index is 19 and it has a clean sweet taste. I use it in hot as well as cold food items.

Lea Ann..I took your advice and ordered some liquid Vanilla Stevia on line. I

saw some on the bottom shelves at Sam's and WalMart had to search for it. But in

packets and powder form. Reading reviews and your suggestions I saw I needed the

liquid. I have been using it three or four days now and like it very much. I

have a raging sweet tooth..and drink my coffee every day as a 12oz mug. That is

the acid test for a sweetener..Habit of too many years, no ifs ands or buts, I

know exactly how I want it to taste. Seven drops is perfect. If I " miss drop " by

one or two it's still good. No bitterness or aftertaste. I ordered mine through

a LuckyVitamin Com. and elected to be on their mailing list. This morning I got

a listing for the NOW company's EIGHT oz. bottle of Stevia. And since I am not

used to all this yet..the price seems good. $15.64 but its called Better Stevia

Liquid Extract, no vanilla.

In everyday usage for the Stevia is it worth the extra for 2 oz. of vanilla. I

think it was around $10. I don't want to spend money I don't need to..but I want

what tastes best too.

Maybe the 8 oz size for things like smoothies with fruit and other cooking and

the Vanilla for my coffee?
