Results of decreasing Gleevec

I started Gleevec in 1999 in December. It took me 5 years to achieve

cytogenetic remission on 600 mg of Gleevec daily. One year ago my pcr

reading was <.01 and I asked the doctor to try reducing my dosage to 400 mg

per day because the side effects had gotten worse, especially the acid

problem in my stomach. In June my pcr reading was .06 and I really expected

it to be higher this December, meaning I would have to increase the Gleevec

again or change medicines. The good news is that the pcr reading from a

week ago was .03, so I am still OK with the 400 mg and will hopefully be

able to maintain my remission on the decreased dose. I hope that this is

good news to other Gleevec " long timers " like me.

Hi Gay,

That is great news.

In a recent telecast, Dr. Druker stated that being at CCR (PCR of 0.1) for a

long time (4 years) affords the same protection as being at PCRU.

Zavie, That's great news for me. I haven't kept up with everything in the

CML field lately. Bye the way, I still have my tee-shirt my daughter made

for me, declaring me to be #788 on your Zero list (12/18/84). What a

journey we've had.

Best wishes for a great 2009,

Hi Gay,

Congratulations on the great results! I can't say that I'm surprised

though because the longer people are on Gleevec, the better their

responses get.

Even after 7 years, I'm finding that my results continue to improve

year after year.
