Guest guest
Bobbie, They are both good omega 3's. Flax seed comes in 3 different forms. There is the oil, which I have tried in the past, and don't care for the taste. It is cold pressed, and is used and mixed with fruit juices then drunk. I didn't like this, so I went into a health food store called: " Whole Foods, " and found whole flax seeds. I used a coffee grinder and ground the seeds for the flax meal. I don't eat much white bread, but used it in a mayonnaise, it tasted better for us, in whole nut, because it has a nice nutty flavor, and it is crunchy. I enjoy the Irish oatmeal that is callled steel cut, where one needs to cook the oatmeal for about 1/2 to soften the oats, not like the Quaker Oats. I happen to like the nutty taste of the flax seeds and throw maybe 2 or 3 table spoons after the oatmeal is cooked to consume with unsweetened soy milk. I have also used the flax seed in making gluten-free muffins, cookies, and in pound cakes. Many people like using the seed in cereals, muffins, and in pasta, with steam veggies, and in salads. Flax seeds are like walnuts, almonds or even pecans, they are protiens, with the good fats, not the ones from meat. They alkaline the body, as a cancer patient on medication has a very acidic reaction to the cancer drug, and other over the counter, and other medications. When taken with foods minus the meats, and or dairy products they help your digestive, and or stomach manage the foods and nutrients without problems. You should also look into probiotics, as they help restore the digestive flora, as many of us need this when in taking antibiotics. The reasons why most people take Whole Flax seeds, or oil or even the flax ground, is that it is a natural source of fiber ( including mucilage), it absorbs excess liquids in ones stomach protecting the digestive tract, and promoting bowel regularity, while the oil is pressed from the flax seeds. Flax meal is the ground up part of the seed that turns into a meal. It is more absorbing, and I suppose you could make or dust your whole wheat bread with it. My package of flax seeds come from a company called: Spectrum. You can go on their website: www.spectrumorganic.com for more F.Y.I's. Most cancer patients choose this because of the natural sources, and all of it's benefits. My last cancer support group, in Illinois at a Cancer Wellness Home, all used this product brand so this is what I buy. It reduces inflammation and improves cellular integrity. Protein is necessary to build muscle mass, which in turns help burn fat. Lignans are phytonutrients that exhibit strong antioxidant properties and can have a much better balancing effects on one's hormones. The seeds are also a concentrated source of lignans phytoestrogens. Hope you find more resources which will help you determine if this is something you would want to continue with, in the mean time you can go on www.about.com and asked what is FLAX SEEDS? to help you find other links which describes the nutty flavor it brings into our foods. In the summer time my children and I add walnuts, dried cranberries, dried cherries, and dried blueberries, with unsweetened granola, and sometimes dark unsweetened chocolate chips, pumpkin seeds, and we consume this as a snack, after we hike into Wisconsin territories woods. I find that after eating handfuls of the mixtures, we tend to eat less when we enter the restaurants.
