Guest guest
Most bags are some combo of nylon and polyethylene, sometimes more of one or the other. But if you are willing to futz around just a bit, nearly anything can be sealed in glass jars. I have the regular Ball jars in all sizes and also use gallon and some old 5 gal glass jars. In the 5 gallon jars I keep my dried fruit/veg/whatever for long term storage; I just today opened the last one from last summer. The other sizes hold everything from spices to grain. There are various ways to seal containers with lids too large/otherwise the wrong size for the attachments made for sealers. First you'll have the make sure the lid is sealable; old pickle jars, etc. The easiest thing is to punch a small tack hole in the lid, somehow rig the hose attachment on the sealer to fit tight to the lid so it can suck the air out and when you are satisfied all the air is out (mine changes sound) very quickly remove sealer hose and stick a small piece of flexible, airtight tape over the hole. I have some tape here that was pitched at the doctor's office where I used to work because it stuck so tight it pulled off skin--works perfect. And only takes a tiny bit for each lid, often reusable. Several people I know use electrical tape. You'll see the teeny dent where the hole is if your vacuum job is sufficient. SJ
