Guest guest
Oh great, now I can add that to my stress list. The last year I have had trouble sleeping more than 5 hours in a row. Doesn't matter what time I go to bed I'm wide awake and ready to go between 3:30 a.m. and 4:30 a.m. I've tried staying up later, drinking herbal teas, taking herbal remedies, exercise, no exercise.......... Guest guest
Well, my advice after nearly two years of not sleeping (the first year+ I averaged 2-3 hours per night!) is – don’t stress about it! I fought it for 1-1/2 years…took every herbal/holistic remedy I could find, tried everything I could think of, even went to the allopathic doctor and got ambien. Nothing worked. I now go to bed whenever I’m sleepy, between 10:00 and 11:00pm…generally awaken around 2:30am or 3:30am…I tell myself I’ll lie in bed for a half hour; if I’m still awake then I’ll get up. I get up, make myself a cup of hot herbal tea (usually with a shot of brandy), and pick up a good book. I’ll read for a couple of hours and then go back to bed. Will awaken at 8:00am when it’s time to get up, refreshed and ready to start my day. Without stressing about not sleeping I’m now averaging 5-7 hours per night, albeit not all in one fell swoop. I found when I stopped stressing about not sleeping I got more rest. Plus, I’ve come to really enjoy my middle-of-the-night solitude, and miss it on those nights when I *do* sleep through the night. Well, I never sleep totally through the night, but I miss it on those nights when I don’t feel the need to get up. My best advice is to relax about it…get up and enjoy that solitary time in the middle of the night…find yourself an engrossing story to read and enjoy yourself. It’ll be worth it in the long run. Guest guest
Hi Shari, Since childhood I have always been a "bad sleeper." I wake up many times a night and sometimes cannot get back to sleep. I have 2 things that work for me. The first I use when I am having an anxiety attack in the middle of the night; I pick a word or phrase to repeat over and over like a mantra until I am calm and fall back to sleep. I use words like love or God, and phrases like thank you for my healing or thank you for my abundance. Whatever you want to focus on. I often say simple prayers for those I love or the planet. I recently found out that this is called a "centering prayer" in the Christian tradition. The other I learned from a Wayne Dwyer lecture. He said that when you wake up and can't get back to sleep easily, to think of it as a wake up nudge from our Creator. And to take the opportunity to sit quietly and breathe and listen to the silence. I can't tell you what a beautiful experience this can be. I sometimes wake up and smile realizing I can take a few minutes to sit quietly with Great Spirit. I fought my fitfull sleep for years, but now I relax into it and focus on making that time work for me instead of against me. Best wishes to you, Shari! Peace on Earth. Guest guest
That's pretty much what I do Sharyn, just go out to the couch and channel surf or read a book. However, I do not have the luxury of going back to bed until 8! I have to be at work with very active teenagers at 7:30 a.m.! I usually sleep in my car on my lunch 1/2 hour break. I have a 30 minute self-hypnosis cd and it works great for a quick nap. Shari
Guest guest
Salam, dear Lady This is so beautiful, the way you come along with your unrest. When the same happens here, we recite some of God's Names, and we think similarily about His Greatness and Kindness. The happiness occured with that makes you forget sleep, and you wish to continue that glorious closeness. Then you fall asleep again, happy and content. You do that before bedtime, too, to avoid nightmares, after washing yourself as if going to pray. We do believe if you do so, your soul will sit under the thrown of Almight God, instead of being kept away to face nightmares alone. Guest guest
Thanks Cheryl. I've used the mantra before, but that even doesn't seem to work any longer. I'll give it another try. And I like the laying in the silence, except the dog must hear my eyes open because he's at my side wanting out! And I know he's not the one waking me up because I hear him get out of his bed and walk over to me. Shari

Guest guest
I'm sorry that some of you have sleep problems, but sincerely I can say that at least this makes me feel less miserable knowing that others have the same problem. I have tried lots of things. I have periods in which I sleep a little better and others, the most, when I sleep almost nothing. I try not to give it importance, but the fact is that I feel horrible all day long and my mind is not clear enough after a sleepless night. Without going into details, I can say it affects my entire life in a negative way. Guest guest
I’m surprised at how well I function on very little sleep. I have lifestyle in which I could take a nap in the afternoon if I felt the need to, but I don’t. (I’ve never been a napper anyway.) Sometimes I’ll fall asleep very early in the evening (9:00 or 9:30), then I’ll still wake up around 3:00am or 3:30am. When I was fighting it, I had a more difficult time…now that I’ve accepted it – I believe it’s menopause in my case and may well work itself out in the next year or two – I seem to have less negative consequences from lack of sleep. Believe me, Rena, there are *lots* of people out there not sleeping at night! Guest guest
In my case, what it helps me one night not necessarily helps me the next time. Sometimes praying or repeating a mantra does the trick, but other times I can pray the whole night and nothing. The same happens with food. Lettuce, onion, garlic, oats helps me sleep, but other times they do nothing. The same I can say about valerian, Passion Flower and other herbs. Guest guest
I've found that if I really need to sleep, the Nerve Sedative Formula in the Files section helps. It also gives vivid dreams. I take in in capsule form when I take it. I sleep an average of 3-4 hours a night, but nap twice a day for an half an hour at a time. I wish I could sleep more, but don't really feel bad when I don't. When I work hard physically, of course I sleep more. When we do our catering for the church, I sleep like a baby. And of course, "being" with Marilyn sure helps!! It also makes us miss sleep, though. I don't know. Is it just age? I'm on the downward slope toward 50. Is it normal to need less sleep as one gets older?. I'm reminded of King's "Insomnia". Peace, love, laughter From: Sharyn E. Guest guest
::pfft:: Downward slope toward 50…I’m on the downward slope toward *60*! My mother, who is 77-1/2, is wide awake at night, goes to sleep very late (1-3am), and sleeps like a baby until it’s time for her to get up at 7:30am. Guest guest
In one occasion I decided to continue active during the night instead of going to bed. The next day I felt even worse, but the next night I scarcely slept anyway. I know people who say: "I have 20 minutes to sleep" and they do even sitting on a chair. Some people sleep while traveling, or in noisy environments and so on. Even if I sleep more or less ok one night, anything can wake me up.
