Guest guest
My school burned down on Tuesday night. I'm still in shock, but we're still in school! Luckily it was just building #1 that housed robotics, web design, computer repair, dental assisting, medical assisting and nurses assisting and of course my class, culinary arts. A remodel was being done and they took an awning down and were in the process of grinding the supports away. One spark was all it took and the roof was on fire. The fire department was there in 6 minutes, but it was a never ending battle that lasted for 36 hours and 4 fire districts, 12 trucks and aide units (NO one was injured save for a fireman who slipped and fell on the flat ground! go figure). Luckily it was after school and there were four office personnel in their offices and they all got out safe. The state gave us two whole days to get school back in session!!! Or lose money and make up the days. Sheesh they are too kind. Lucky our school is more than one building and the classes were dispersed among the other rooms. And it is the end of the year so a lot of the assisting programs are gone because they are out doing internships. We were fortunate in that the school district I work for has their main kitchens right next to us so we are meeting in the dry pantry! What a hoot. I'm in the closet! Plus they have a catering kitchen within the huge kitchen that we can use for the kids' final practical test. Chef and I were bemoaning the fact we weren't going to be in on the remodel except for new carpet and paint. Now we get an entire new kitchen and restaurant! Should be exciting as all get out. Now I just have to worry whether I'll have a job next year because I really don't think they can build a new school between now and September 2. It would be perfectly fine with me if I could draw unemployment for a year and then go back into some dandy new digs. I was hired to run the restaurant and if there isn't one........................... Will keep you posted...........Shari
