Re: rheumatic Saw Palmetto

Ike,

All I can say is that my brother took 2 capsules in the morning and 2 in the

evening (I do that as well,as a preventative). My brother is 52 and has

problems over the years. He claimed this worked astonishingly well. I don't

know for sure what brand he was taking - I'm taking a standardized version made

by Spring Valley (bought at Walmart). Each 2 capsules contain 80mg of saw

palmetto extract (standardized for 85-95% Fatty Acids and Biologically Active

Sterols). I think 100 capsules sold for around $10.

Hope this helps,

Mark

My belief is that that they are all good for you. Saw Pawmetto lowers your

DHT, or rather it locks up the receptors that would receive DHT.

Quercetin is an anti-oxident found primarily in onions and related. It has

a number of health benefits.

Lycopene is an especially potent anti-oxident, carotene. It is the red

pigment in tomatoes, strawberries and watermelon. One of, if not the best,

indicator of whether a man will get prostate cancer is the level of lycopene

in their blood. The second best indicator is the level of Vitamin D which is

why the incidence of prostate cancer increases in populations as the

distance from the equator increases. Vitamin D is formed in the oils of the

skin from sunlight, unless taken by supplement.

Saw pawmetto works against BPH, benign prostate hypertrophy, which is

enlargement of the prostate but usually not correlated with cancer, although

a serious health issue for other reasons. The other supplements protect

against cancer of the prostate.

Should I supplement with saw palmetto in addition to my arimidex

bought " Nature's Prostate Remedy " , which has 320mg saw palmetto

along with other supplements such as stinging nettle and zinc. I

stopped taking it partially because of impatience, and partially

because I was trying something else. " Less is more " is an approach

I try to follow as well, so everytime I try something new, I stop

everything else. That way I can pinpont what's helping and what

isn't.

Any thoughts? Thanks

Before attempting to lower your DHT you should get it measured first.

On the Fin group, for some people saw palmetto reduces sex drive. Saw

Palmetto is the herb form of propecia.

From my understanding, it works differently in that it blocks dht

from binding, whil propecia blocks the enzyme. You may want to look

into this.

However get your DHT checked, maybe its not an issue.

Just like E2, it will go up and down with T. So, if your T is lower

than before, then your DHT will be lower, too.

BTW, Dr. Shippen told me that he doesn't believe that high DHT in the

blood bothers the prostate or even affects the prostate. He said that

the prostate makes its own DHT inside and its not affected by DHT

outside. That's my recollection, but I'm not positive of it so don't

quote me on it.

> Bee, since my prostatitis has been bothering me would it be okay if I started

taking saw palmetto?

+++Hi Tom. Yes, it won't hurt you, however healing still has to come from

within, which takes time, and that is when your body has finished detoxing in

that area. So the symptoms may come and go for some time.

You could take it, but it should only be as a " tea, " and have a maximum of 3

cups per day.

All the best, Bee

Only as a tea? Is there a special reason why I can't just take a softgel? Thanks

again.

Thanks again.

+++Tom, your body is better able to absorb and utilize the tea form of any herb,

and softgels contain too much of it. More is not better.

With natural healing you " nudge " the body with helpful things, but you don't

push it.

I take whole leaf saw palmetto (capsules), it has been a miracle

herb for me.. about 12 years ago I began having prostrate problems

(age 44) and the urologist claimed it was infected and prescribed

antibiotics. Symptoms kept returning and he prescribed longer and

longer courses of antibiotics. Took them off and on over several

years then I changed docs and the new urologist said I'd been taking

too many antibiotics and put me on Flomax. It fixed the problem but

kept me dizzy all the time. A year later my regular doctor suggested

Saw Palmetto, and I was able to quit Flomax and for the past 3 years

I've had no prostrate problems and no side effects whatsoever. I suggest whole

leaf in capsules though rather than the extract in

softgels, if you want convenience, or tea should work just as well

but not as convenient. I do believe though once I'm on Bee's plan

for a good while and cancel out all the past mis-eating and

antibiotic use, that I may be able to do away with Saw Palmetto

as well.
