Guest guest
Gretchen, Have you heard anything recently about the publication status of the Italian ascorbic acid trial? Thanks for any information, Matt

Guest guest
Another study from 2008 (although in french) can be found here: http://cmt-france.org/index.php?option=com_content & view=article & id=93:essai-news\ & catid=71:actualite & Itemid=67 CMT1A: First results of l' test Vitamin C L' Public assistance - Hospital of Marseilles announced, this day, the first results of l' test carried out by l' equip with clinical pharmacology of Dr. le Micallef-Roll on l' action of l' ascorbic acid (vitamin C) in the disease of Charcot-Marie-Tooth of the 1A type. This randomized test, as a double blind man against placebo, allowed l' inclusion, of 2005 to 2008, 180 patients from 18 to 70 years out of 3 sites in France (Marseilles, Lyon and Paris). The patients were divided, in a random way, in 3 groups: placebo/amount of 1g /dose of 3g, each one taking 3 gélules per day the morning during one year. A good tolerance was observed, whatever the amount, during this period. No significant difference between the 3 n' groups; was observed on the principal criterion of l' test (scale CMTNS which measures the symptoms driving, sensitive and the speed of nervous conduction), nor on the secondary criteria like the muscular testing, the up time or the scales of quality of life. However, in 12 months, an effectiveness of the strongest amount d' ascorbic acid (3g) appears on the driving and sensitive symptoms patients (through score CMT-ES). These results are a first stage: they show the need for setting up, subject to l' opinion of the authorities of health, a new longer-term test (over 2 years) to confirm these new data which must now be validated by a publication in an scientific magazine. L' AFM and CMT-France, which gave their support for this study, make a point of recalling that l' ascorbic acid (Vitamin C) should not be taken without medical monitoring. Recent work, indeed, showed that this molecule, could, with very strong amount, to have toxic effects, particularly in the children and the expectant mothers. Recall: This test was set up following the publication into 2004 of experimental work in the mouse showing l' improvement of the driving functions and the lifespan of the mice following l' absorption d' a strong amount d' ascorbic acid. This molecule would allow, indeed, l' inhibition of gene PMP22 and thus a repair of the sheath of myéline which surrounds the nerve. In the CMT1A, the sheath of myéline is, indeed, affected causing a deceleration of nervous conduction.
Guest guest
I'd ask my naturopath, but right now he's taking a trip up or is it down the Amazon ! Shari
Guest guest
I was on the Vitamin C regime from my neurologist at the Universty of Chicago. I am diagnosed with CMT 1A. He told me to stop the Vitamin C. He stated that the study he was following, there was no help. He said he was afraid of the kidney stone implications. I hope this helps.
