I don't like the sugar part but at least you're not eating it.

By Annie B. Bond

OK, folks. Get ready for almost unbelievably soft skin (even for those of us with older skin).

The other day I was speaking with Larry Pleasant, CEO of The Vermont Soapworks, and he mentioned that he and his staff had spent the morning testing homemade sugar scrubs, and that everyone was commenting on how incredibly soft their skin felt. Aware that sugar cane produces glycolic acid, one of the natural alpha hydroxy acids that exfoliates the skin, I was immediately curious about his recipes.

Ingredients

50 percent white cane sugar (note that organic sucanat, while the best choice for food, doesn’t work as well for this recipe) 50 percent vegetable glycerin to moisten the sugar (I used avocado oil since I was out of vegetable glycerin and it proved to be a successful substitute) Small amounts of aloe vera gel, vitamin C crystals, or anything healing that dissolves in water 1 or 2 drops of essential oil if desired (Larry recommends combining orange and lavender) Enough ground hibiscus powder for pink color (if desired)

Combine the ingredients in a bowl. Scoop some of the scrub onto your hand and massage gently onto your skin for a minute (the scrub will actually tighten onto your skin like a masque). Leave on for 3 to 4 minutes before rinsing.

Let me warn you in advance that you’ll want to use this sugar scrub on your entire body. I started on my face, returned to my desk, and my skin felt so baby soft that the skin on my neck felt like sandpaper, so I needed to use the sugar scrub there, and on and on.

This is almost the same recipe I use for my sugar scrub. I just use a cup of sugar and two tablespoons of olive oil and two tablespoons of raw honey and mix. I never thought of the Aloe gel though. I'll have to try that and this scrub you just rinse off right after scrubbing. No leaving it on but maybe that might help in making the skin even softer. It makes my skin feel great. Suzie, why don't you like the sugar for the skin? I find that it's a great exfoliate. I use this scrub especially before shaving my legs. they come out so much smoother after shaving than without it. Anyway, it works for me. Maybe someone else here can give it a try and let me know how you like it.

You girls are nuts! I tried it and it felt like I had sandpapered my face!

I will admit I have never used an exfoliant before, so I did not know what to expect. But not pleasant by any means. Softer skin? Yes, some. But not worth it. The next day it felt windburned. Not my cuppa tea.

Hi Gayla,

I thought the sugar scrubs were just for the body! I could be wrong... I use baking soda with a few drops of water to scrub my face. Works fine as a gentle exfoliant. Also Also, a little pure aloe gel and a few drops of jojoba oil in the palm of my hand and rub on face for a good moisturizer.

Peace on earth.

I have used the sugar scrubs but only on the soles of my feet. I can't imagine using it on any other part of my body! Ouch! Oh well yes, I have used it on my elbows also!

Cheryl, this started with Suzi's post of facial sugar scrub. Being a person of known bravery and adverturousness, I tried it. Not again.

Oooh Gayla

I think you must have scrubbed way too hard. When using something like a sugar or a salt scrub you need to go very gently over the skin on any part of your body. You poor thing. I don't even want to imagine how that feels. Just keep up with the facial moisturizer and in a few days it should be fine. If your face is actually red from the scrub then I would try not to use any soap on your skin and just use a cleansing cream for a few days until the redness goes away. Hope you'll feel better soon.

Actually it works great for me and on the rest of my body. Just be sure to scrub carefully so you don't end up like poor Galya.

I have survived the great experiment. I don't use much on my face at all besides well water. But I have been asked to add something like a face scrub (I already have a peppermint foot scrub) to go with the other things I sell. When it feels like that, I would never think of putting anything on it. I make some killer shea body butter that folks use on their faces, but I did not even use that. It's fine now.

I think you are right - I scrubbed way too hard. Scrubbed - it should be sugar pat, not sugar scrub. LOL
