I finally have some fresh ginger. How is it cold? I don't > care for hot drinks. Here's what I do. I take a piece of ginger, about 1 inch in diameter and 2 inches long. I peel it (probably unnecessary) then slice/chop it up a bit. Then I pour boiling water over it, cover my tea cup and let it steep for at least 20 minutes. I like the taste well enough though it is quite strong, I often drink it cool or luke warm (a couple drops of stevia makes it taste better too!). This tea really works great for nausea, on me anyway. Even on those days I wake up ready to vomit, I just drink a cup of this stuff and in 5 minutes the nausea is almost gone! It's almost a miracle for me! I have also heard of people actually simmering the ginger on the stove for 20 minutes to get all the " stuff " out, but I haven't tried that yet since the other way is working for me... Guest guest
, I like to simmer a 1 " to 2 " piece of ginger, sliced, for a minute or two and let it steep several minutes. You can drink it hot, or let it steep longer until really cool and concentrated, and add it to other iced herbal teas in the summer. It's really good in those brew-in-your-refrigerator teas from Celestial Seasonings, and if you add it to a strong-flavored tea it tastes good without sweetning. It's also good chopped fine and added to stir-frys or blended into fruit shakes in small quantities. It is said to have protective effects on the stomach, I used it a lot when I was taking large doses of nsaids. Other claims made for it are anti-inflammatory properties and that it breaks down immune complexes. This is just from reading herb books, I have not seen actual studies on anything but the anti-nausea effects. Liz G
Guest guest
, My doctors told me that after I got under 10 mgs. of pred I'd start losing weight. I think I expected the pounds to melt away but they didn't. However, after many months of just 5 mgs. the pounds are now beginning to slip away, one by one. I'm averaging only a pound or two a week and some weeks I lose nothing, but for the first time in a year and a half I'm consistently now under 150 lbs. The amount of fluid you're retaining can have a lot to do with how much you lose. I take a ton of diuretics, so that probably helps, but without them my ankles turn into tree stumps! Take care, Geri

Guest guest
Ginger, am I using the wrong term or why isn't anyone talking about their platelet count? The reason I ask is Jodi's count has been under 50,000 ever since they found out she has AIH. The doctor at University of Miami says he will not do a biopsy of her liver because it's to risky, she might bleed to death. He tells us he can tell she has cirrhosis by the x-rays? I have not asked this question before for fear of sounding stupid but what the heck. Genny/Jodi's Mom

My Gastro doctor has never been one to prescribe anything for pain so I sleep a lot it is getting to the point where I can't stand the pain any longer and I get so depressed that I can't concentrate on anything. Does anyone know of anyover the counter pain med that would help a little but not be toxic to the liver? Would greatly appreciate anyones suggestions. Thank you, (mhe3053904@...) Guest guest
, When you have liver problems. Taking any over the counter drugs could have potential effects that could be harmful to your liver. I almost died because I used Ibuprofen, and Tylenol to ease my arthritis pain. Because I have moron doctors. So you really need to check with your doctor and hope your doctors have more brains than the ones I am stuck with. gayle/trans.6-99 galye@... ^0^ `

Guest guest
Hi Audrey, When you say it didnt show up in your blood work until last year, do you mean your LFTs? If so, thats kind of worrying that you may have active AIH and normal LFTs! Elena Audrey <aab1@...> wrote: Hi Ginger,My name was not on the list but I'm still out here reading the posts. Guest guest
All this talk about being depressed and the doctors not looking into it got me thinking. I can remember after my daughter was born I told my gyno how depressed I had been, with no reason to be. He claimed it was because I had my tubes tied. You see he didn't want to do but I already had a boy and a girl, having more would have been to hard on us financially. Seems to me that maybe if he hadn't ignored me maybe I would have been diagnosed earlier. My daughter was born in 1991 and I was diagnosed in 1997 with AIH. Guest guest
Tracie, Did you ever consider your depression was post-partum depression? Didn't you say it was right after your child was born. Your hormones play havoc with you after giving birth.
Guest guest
Hi I did have the " baby blues " but the depression I felt was not that. I am currently taking zoloft to fight the depression. I feel the depression was probably a sign then that something was wrong, my gyno just wanted to blame on tying my tubes, seeing as I had to fight to get it done.
