Guest guest
We have a veggie garden every year. We always plant cucumbers. I love them for everything. I could just sit and eat them raw all day. We had a dog named Molson who loved cucumbers so much that he would go and just pick his own right off the plant and sit there and eat it. He was soooo cute. I really miss him. Lynn From: evergreengarden Sent: Friday, April 23, 2010 6:04 PM health Subject: Re: The Cucumber I like to put in in the blender with tomato. Guest guest
Oh, Ziggy sounds like a great dog. I'm sorry for what happened to him. Both Molson and his (litter mate) brother Duke (or Dukie) died of cancer. They each had different kinds but still cancer. Those two boys will live in this family's hearts forever. Rich, the man that almost nothing has an effect on, was broken to pieces when we lost them. We have four dogs right now and there is one in the bunch that he's particularly attached to. His name is Kupo. We adopted him from the pound. He's our "pound puppy". He has the same markings (almost) as Dukie but he's waaaay bigger. This dog has sheperd, (sp) Rot., and great dane. He's an absolute horse, but looks very much like Dukie and just loves his daddy. So Rich kind of bonded with him. I have a something for anyone in here who might know or have any suggestions. We have another dog. Her name is Sadie and she is the "pack leader" she is going on 13 years old and has really lost a lot of her bladder control. As a result she is wet most of the time and has developed a sore or ulcer on her labia. I know that thing has to sting when she pees. The vet told me to make sure to wipe her off using those doggie wipes and gave me some Rx. powder to put on it. I just have had no luck in getting rid of that sore. Any suggestions? What a sick puppy he was that week. Corgis will eat most anything. I really miss him as well. Dog had the run of the garden, was fed organic, raw beef and drank purified water and he died of cancer! Guest guest
I'm sure you're right. I've just always eaten them as a veg. I use tomatoes as a veg too. I guess it's just the way I was raised and how we always ate. I'm sure it has something to do with the fact that when I think of fruit I think of "sweet", and cucumbers and tomatoes aren't sweet. In my brain, I'm sure that's the reason I think of them as a veg. That's just me. Guest guest
I've heard talk that a fruit is anything that grows above the ground, with veggies being only grown below the ground. That would take out most of the guessing for sure. The only exceptions would be those both grown below ad above the ground that we eat. Like a dandelion for instance. We can eat the roots, the leaves and the flowers. Onion bulbs can be eaten, but so can the leaves/stalks. Personally, I like the fruits and veggies to stay as they are and determine once and for all, what area a tomato belongs in. Guest guest
ok, technically it is a fruit if you go by most definitions... there are a range of foods that are considered both by most people.. Fruit and Vegetable Have you ever wondered why oranges or watermelon are classified as fruits? Why potatoes, celery or cabbage has been sorted out as vegetables? There has to be some scientific reason behind this classification, which has been confusing people for ages. The difference between fruit and vegetable lies in their scientific definition, which is used to identify them. Let us take a look at the definition of both, which can be useful in understanding the classification.Fruit: A fruit is deemed to be a sweet and fleshy plant product, which includes, apples, orange, plum, etc. In the botanical sense, a fruit is defined as the ripened ovary of a flowering plant and contains seeds. In most cases, the ripened ovaries, along with the surrounding tissues are called fruits and these fruits are a means of dissemination of seeds. This is facilitated by the consumption of fruits by animals and birds, as most of the fruits are sweet and contain fleshy, edible parts. Vegetable: In general, a vegetable is defined as the edible part of a plant. If a plant, which produces fruits, is also used as a vegetable, then the plant can be taken as a vegetable and the fruit produced by it, as a fruit. There is no botanical definition for the word 'vegetable'. It is a collective term used to denote all parts of herbaceous plants, which are eaten by human beings as foods. It can include the leaves, as in the case of cabbage, the roots as in carrots and beets, the bulbs as in Basically it is a fruit if you go by most definitions... there are a range of foods that are considered both by most people.., the flowers as in broccoli, the stems as in asparagus, seeds as in peas, etc. Difference Between Fruit and VegetableNow, you know the meaning of the terms fruit and vegetable. But, it can be argued that if any of the edible part of a plant is a vegetable, then fruit is also an edible part and can be a vegetable. So, what is the factor that differentiates a fruit from a vegetable? The major fruit and vegetable difference is that fruits contain seeds, which are capable of developing into new plants and vegetables lack seeds. Even though, some of the vegetables are used in plant reproduction, they are not considered as fruits. In short, a fruit is a matured ovary of a plant and contain seeds, whereas a vegetable can be any of the edible part of a plant, which does not contain seeds. Hence, it is the presence of seeds that makes the difference in classifying a fruit. This is the reason for classifying tomatoes, cucumbers, etc. as fruits, even though, they are used as vegetables. Other 'technical' fruits are avocados, squashes, olives, pea pods, squashes and zucchini, pumpkins and peppers. Even nuts and grains are also classified as fruits. Read more on tomato - fruit or vegetable, Is corn a vegetable.Fruits are ripened ovary or ovaries, of a plant and contain seeds. Vegetables are edible parts of a plant, other than fruits. It can be said that, while, a fruit could be a vegetable (as in the case of tomatoes), a vegetable could not be a fruit. Most of the fruits contains a simple sugar called fructose, which gives the sweet taste, but, vegetables have less amounts of fructose. The sweetness of the fruits attracts animals and birds to consume them and thereby disperse the seeds. Now, you know the difference between vegetable and fruit. Leave the debate of fruit vs vegetable to others and include lots of fruits and vegetables in your diet to lead a healthy life. Suzi List Owner health What is a weed?
