Guest guest
Hi there! It look like I have a little problem with my alfalfa sprouts. This is my first time with them. They are supposed to be easy to sprouts so I'm ashamed to say that after 3 to 4 days, they are still so little that I'm planning to throw them away. I rinse them 2 times a day... Do I need to do more? How am I supposed to make them sprout? Thanks for your help! Karine
Guest guest
I personally put them in the fridge when they reach about 1/4 " long, and that's how we eat them, no longer than 1/2 " . But " greening " them as lots of people in this group do, is a good idea, too. Guest guest
Alfalfa sprouts are tiny, I usually sprout two - three tablespoons at a time. Guest guest
I have found that if you sow too many alfalfa seeds and get them too crowed that they seem to spoil after about two days growth. Try sowing fewer seed and see what happens. ew Alfalfa sprouts Date: Sun, 20 Jan 2008 13:05:00 -0500 Hi there! It look like I have a little problem with my alfalfa sprouts. Guest guest
I had a few problems with alfalfa when I used a tray sprouter and found that if I only spread a half a teaspoon over one third of the tray and three days later the next third, etc. it worked out. Now I use a automatic sprouter and the only problem I have now is sprouting too much. ew Alfalfa sprouts Date: Sun, 20 Jan 2008 13:05:00 -0500 Hi there! Guest guest
What about the alfalfa sprouts they sell ine the health store? They are huge! What do they do that I don't? Guest guest
Those alfalfa sprouts are grown TOO LONG. That's one the advantages of home sprouting--fresh, nutritionally maximized sprouts. Guest guest
Karine; I just ate some of my first batch of alfalfa mix and they took 6 days, same as my adzuki beans. I keep my house very warm during the day, but it cools off at night. I just used mason jars and cheese cloth. Don't give up, start a second batch today and wait for the first. Guest guest
Hi Karine, Do you know how old the seeds are? I recently found a jar of old sprout seeds in a cupboard and tried sprouting them, and very few of them did. Maybe your seeds are old. That's just one possibility. Maybe you could try some other ones from a different source. Regards, Lorri W. > > Hi there! > It look like I have a little problem with my alfalfa sprouts. > This is my first time with them. Guest guest
I have a Freshlife sprouter too, can you share your tricks. I tried to sprout whest on the lower tray and buckwheat and mung beans on the top tray, but wheat grass takes longer to grow (for juice) and it grew thru the upper tray, when I tried to remove the top tray the wheat grass pulled out from the bottom tray. I've been using it for two weeks only, so I am learning. Any tips would be appreciated. > > I use FreshLife and I love it. Guest guest
I don't understand, nor do I agree with not being able to duplicate the long growth at home. I have sprouted for well into 20 years and have had no problem getting my alfalfa sprouts to grow as long as the ones in the stores, until I moved into an unheated house. I use a mason jar with a plastic sprouter lid, and no chemicals! Karine, I would suggest checking to see if your temperature in the area you are sprouting is adequate. Next I would check to see if the seeds are old. Guest guest
The main thing they showed me was timing is everything. If you start more than one seed at a time on a tray, make sure that they mature at the same time. Such as alfalfa and broccoli. Start seeds on one tray and then turn the second tray upside down on the first tray. This keeps the seeds from being moved around by the spray, After a couple of days remove the top tray. When you see green, remove the cover and let your sprouts grow until you harvest them. You can start a second tray below the first at the same time you remove it from the first tray. My second tray is almost always mung beans because I eat so many of them using them in salads and nearly every thing I cook. The bottom tray should always been a bean or pea because of the weight of the top tray will crush smaller sprouts. I have never had the roots from the top tray get tangled with the sprouts from the bottom tray. I can suggest two things. You are not harvesting your sprouts on the top tray soon enough and you're letting the roots get to big. Since wheat grass is cut and allowed to regrow it might be best to get a second barrel just for your wheat grass, or grow the grass somewhere else. I don't do grass, but people I know that do, grow it in flats. I am fortunate to have a second bath room that gets lots of light where I can grow things in the bathtub so that I have lots of things going on at once. Hope this helps. Any other questions? Feel free to ask. That's what this group is for. ew Alfalfa sprouts > > > Date: Sun, 20 Jan 2008 13:05:00 -0500 > > > > > > Hi there! > > > It look like I have a little problem with my alfalfa sprouts. > > > This is my first time with them. Guest guest
I find I am developing a sprout palate. I am learning what to mix with what and which sprouts I like by themselves. Fenugreek I like by itself Alfalfa I have mixed with Chinese cabbage and I like that alot. Broccoli seeds are expensive but if you think about it, you are saving money in the long run by investing in preventative measures that will keep you healthy. n Rollings, PhD NJ Licensed Psychologist #4686 www.DrnRollings.com 908-500-7295 Sent from my IPod Touch On Oct 25, 2010, at 3:15 PM, " joyceiscrafty " <PaintingOnTheFly@...> wrote: > Last week I said that I didn't care for the alfalfa sprouts.
