Guest guest
Now see what happens when you don't have your own garden... I didn't even know that there are yellow beets, I have only ever seen and used red. Maybe yellow ones taste different and need to be used sparingly.Carla From: kareningotham@...Date: Mon, 26 Jul 2010 22:24:26 -0400Subject: RE: Beets I make juice with carrots, Fuji apples, yellow beets (just a little), and fresh ginger--I juice a half-gallon at a time. Fabulous! Beets Hi, I've seen a few smoothie recipes with beets and they don't specify cooked or not. On one video I saw, the lady used frozen beets ?? Again were they cooked? Guest guest
Sadly where I live they have managed to destroy local agriculture and commerce to the point there is no alternative to big box stores for most things. Costco is the best of the worst and they don't ever have beets, so my beet vendor here is none other than Walmart no relationships there. 90% of food sold here are imported and the little local agriculture that still occurs is of certain crops none of which are beets.Carla From: kareningotham@...Date: Mon, 26 Jul 2010 22:29:17 -0400Subject: RE: Re: Beets They usually just toss 'em. If you have a good relationship with your vendor, ask him to save them for you. In fact, sometimes they'll trim them right in front of you. Guest guest
Really, so how many types of beets are there? Are the ones you grow all different colors?Carla From: berrywell@...Date: Mon, 26 Jul 2010 19:35:48 -0700Subject: RE: Re: Beets I grow three types of beets in my gardens, but since I grow organically, the greens are often nibbled on by critters-small price to pay though! > > I juice beets so I see no reason why they couldn't be used raw in a smoothie. I'd also suggest using them sparingly, especially to start. > > As a sidebar, remember that beets exit the body the same color as they enter, so don't panic if you see bright red in the potty the next morning-I did and called my doctor, lol. > > > > > [ ] Beets > >  Hi, I've seen a few smoothie recipes with beets and they don't specify cooked or not. Guest guest
I use them sparingly because I find that they have a "dirty" flavor that tastes nice if used sparingly but....dirty if not (FWIW, I find this true of all beets). Beets Hi, I've seen a few smoothie recipes with beets and they don't specify cooked or not. On one video I saw, the lady used frozen beets ?? Again were they cooked? Guest guest
There are actually many varieties of beets. I grow yellow beets, globe beets and cylinder beets which grow thin and teardrop shaped-I get the seeds from a friend in England, where they are very popular. When I started veggie gardening, I was VERY surprised at the variety of MOST veggies-I had only ever seen "typical" varieties in store. I grow lemon cucumbers, which are round and bright yellow. The corn I grow is purple. My carrots are snow white and shaped like golf balls, and I grow purple carrots too! I grow ying yang beans, which look JUST like the ying yang symbol! I grow 9 varieties of miniature potatoes that are a variety of colors. I grow micro tom tomatoes where the tomatoes are the size of green peas. I simply had NO clue that such things even existed! I suggest ordering a catalog of seeds from some of the heirloom seed companies on the internet-it will give you wonderful insight to whats available out there, that we never even hear about. I had ZERO experience with gardening, and have very limited yard space, so I grow just about everything in containers. I went from knowing zilch about gardening to growing ALL of mine and my daughters veggies for the year-and we are both vegetarian, so thats a LOT of veggies! I highly recommend trying it for anyone who has never gardened-very rewarding. I have been growing my own for over 9 years now-much of it grown in my living room in aerogardens and grow lights-pretty nifty to harvest a summer squash from your living room in the dead middle of winter!! > > I juice beets so I see no reason why they couldn't be used raw in a smoothie. Guest guest
wow, , I am trying to get started growing vegetables this year, thanks for your input, it is very encouraging. I just got some chicks which will provide us with eggs and some rabbits for meat. I want to grow vegetables for my family as well as to feed the animals. I think containers are probably the best way to go. I am in Florida but the weeds are a full time job. thanks you mayra On Tue, Jul 27, 2010 at 10:08 AM, Berry <berrywell@...> wrote: There are actually many varieties of beets. Guest guest
You are most welcome, . Container gardening is WONDERFUL! I use all sorts of unconventional things to garden in. I buy up round tables at yard sales for next to nothing, then flip them over and line them with landscape fabric and use them to grow my potatoes in-works great! These are small side tables, not a large eating table. I also sew up some simple potato "grow bags" with landscape fabric-they are easy to fill with soil as you "hill" your potatoes during growing, then even easier to dump out on to a tarp to harvest the lil gems at the end of growing! I grow ALL of my vine type plants upside down from containers I converted for the purpose-I cut a hole in the bottom of a standard hanging basket, then line the bottom with landscape fabric with a big X cut in it-I push my seedling up through the X, fill the pot with soil and let the plant grow downwards-I plant herbs or lettuces in the top part for double duty. I got most of my hanging baskets and containers free off of freecycle, or very inexpensively at yard sales or flea markets. Biggest thing is to be sure you use a FOOD GRADE type container to avoid plastics leaching in to your plants. Happy to send you pics if my description makes no sense, lol. >> I juice beets so I see no reason why they couldn't be used raw in a smoothie. Guest guest
You are welcome! And while tires are a good idea in theory, NEVER grow food in them! They are highly toxic and poison the soil, and thus the veggies! Hay bales are great for making a quick raised bed garden, and you can use the tops of them to mulch or hill up as you go! Many farms will sell old hay thats no longer fit for animal consumption in square bales that can just be placed end to end in a square for an instant garden!
