Guest guest
Hey Thia, I have a Freshlife and I was grossed out at the yucky water I dumped after the first day. It turns out the first rinse is always pretty bad, it clears up after that. But, because of this, I change the water twice a day the first day, or even three times a day if I am doing broccoli/cabbage (they stink). I don't sprout my sunnies with the black hulls on, though, I buy hulled for my Freshlife, but I do use the ones with the hulls still on to make sunflower greens in a tray, with soil or a baby blanket. I would surmise that the reason everything was so brown was because of the pigment in the hulls. That should improve as the hulls shed, but, on the other hand, if they are not removed from the sprouter the pigment may stay, I don't know. Let us know how they turn out. The Freshlife is a good machine. You will be happy with it once you get to know it. Love those sunflower sprouts, yummmmm. Good luck! Suze > > Well, I settled on the Freshlife. Guest guest
Hey? Yes the hulls of the sunflower turns the water dark. By the third day you should start getting clearer water. Not necessary to change the water more than once a day. The water is not foul. Its ok to use it in your garden or on house plants. I have grown half sunflower and half pea shoots at the same time with no problem. There are several of us in this group who use the FreshLife. Continue to ask your question and concerns. We will help. ew Freshlife arrived Date: Thu, 11 Sep 2008 17:23:36 -0400 Well, I settled on the Freshlife. My first choice was the Gogreen, but since I have no way of hooking directly to a water source, that was out, for me. The Freshlife arrived Wednesday afternoon, and I set it up. I started with sunflower seeds (in hull) because I'd been craving sunflower greens. Been a while since I bothered to do them, since they seem to be a lot of work for me; They usually mold. Not sure if it's the humidity here, or what. Anyway, they sprout these (relatively large) creamy white tails that fascinate me to watch. And they are my FAV ones to eat. Because they typically mold on me, I decided to use hydrogen peroxide. I've never used it before, but didn't want such a large batch going bad (Man! That Freshlife is HUGE!) After the first day, I dumped the water, and UGH! It was BROWN. Not sure if that is from the dark color of the hulls? Anyway, day two- today- dumped the water, and again YUCKY BROWN. I decided to take a peek at the sprouts- so I lifted the top tray, and to my horror, found that the sprouts were that SAME YUCKY BROWN COLOR! Ok, this is just gross. I knew that this machine recycled the same water, until you change it (recommends once daily- which I have been doing). But MAN! This really makes a person hyper aware that it's best to buy organic produce in the market- cause whatever goes ON the plant BECOMES PART OF the plant. Yes, I knew this already-- but to SEE it in action. Wow. I'm really not sure what to do. I suppose I could change the water more than once a day- but Wow! That thing uses a LOT of water! Guest guest
Just wash your machine out with dish soap after your sprouts are harvested, and it will be fine the color is not permanent. ew Re: Freshlife arrived Date: Thu, 11 Sep 2008 22:23:52 -0000 Hey Thia, I have a Freshlife and I was grossed out at the yucky water I dumped after the first day. Guest guest
The color of the water looks yucky, but is not the source of my disappointment. The disappointment is the fact that the sprouts themselves are brown, where as they are normally white (on the second day- before getting big enough to green). The water color seems to be the reason the sprouts themselves are not white, as they are the same color as the water. They look to be growing well-- just not white. They do not look rotten, just not that nice creamy white I'm used to. Guest guest
Yes, sunflower greens is what I am wanting. They are my favorite. They are showing in a picture in the booklet that came with the Freshlife- growing in it. Nice, tall and green. One of my main reasons for getting a sprouter, is to have sunflower greens. I never used soil for those- I know many folks do. I may try presoaking and rinsing next time- before putting them in the Freshlife- and see if that helps. From my understanding, I can not get greens from the sunflowers with hulls removed, right? I'm not sure I understand why- but it's what I think I read somewhere... Maybe your seeds were a little to dark. Guest guest
I never had success with the hulless seeds sprouting. They seem to get slimy and smell bad. However, check out what .com has to say about it. Soaking and rinsing before you put them in the machine won't hurt. BTW the picture of the sunflower sprouts is tricked up. Take a close look and you will see another tray under the top one to make it look like the sprouts get real tall. Don't expect your sprout to get more than 4 inches. Harvest after six days for best results. ew Re: Re: Freshlife arrived Date: Thu, 11 Sep 2008 21:59:15 -0400 Yes, sunflower greens is what I am wanting. They are my favorite. Guest guest
Yeah, I noticed well before I bought it (pic online) that they had " tricked up " the photo with two layers of sprouts. But this particular photo with the sunflower greens is 'aerial view'; can't see the sides. But what I get from the photo is: they are claiming sunflower greens can be grown in it. I'm just not sure about what I have right now; I guess I'll get someone to smell them for me-- I don't have the ability: congenital anosmia. Guest guest
Hi ew Thanks for the water info. We make our own distilled (husband born with propensity to make kidney stones, distilled water totally alleviated the problem) and could use that, but I suspect the foaming is coming from the crimson clover. I got these white crimson clover seeds from about a year ago, from whom I buy all my seeds, and have great success 99% of the time the the rest of the variety of seeds. Cress and Arugula are tricky, but I am putting them in a mix now. It could be the foamyness is also from the cress and Arugula because of the slimy coating that comes off these seeds. No matter, I just change the water more often and use it to water my outside plants. Interestingly enough, I threw the clover onto the ground thinking it might grow there and they all sprouted! Go figure. Maybe this is a particular batch of seeds that need soil, little moisture, and no lid. Of course, I should rinse off the sprouts when I change the water. How clueless of me not to think of this. I suspect that will reduce the foamyness. Thanks for that! Regarding how much seed to use for the Freshlife, the instruction showed the whole tray covered with seeds, but we noticed with the Radish Sprouts, even though the crop was huge and thick, there were many seeds that sprouted but had no room to grow up. So I just returned the trays to the sprouter, put the sprouted by ungrown radish seeds back and the remaining seeds are growing. I will reduce how much seed I use. So the question is, if you have time, how much of what seed do you use in the Fresh life? Or if measuring is not an option, what does the tray look like once you have added a particular seed? Is the tray completely covered, or is there a tiny bit of space between seeds? Does the amount change according to the type of seed? Thanks again for all the info you share here. It was your inspiration regarding the Freshlife and the Vitality website that got us going in the direction we wanted. Their prices are very helpful. We also got their Yolife yogurt maker and are thrilled with the results of cow and goat milk yogurt. Interestingly enough, the yogurt maker comes with a huge lid to use when making quart jars of yogurt. Oddly enough, it fits onto the Fresh life tub , when using the holding hooks that come with second tub. This allows light in and the sprouts still get the water spray. How clever! Guest guest
Yes! This is my first batch, and I used exactly what the directions that came with the machine recommended- and it is WAAAY too many seeds. Some of the seeds have no where to put down root, and are sending them upward! wow. new one for me. It is also my first time using peroxide. yesterday I snitched a few to taste. YUCK, they tasted like peroxide! I used exactly what the booklet recommended, but I think it was too much as well. I immediately switched out the water, and left out the peroxide (used just water). Fascinating is the fact that this morning, the water was less yucky! makes me think that the peroxide was bleaching out the color from the hulls, and then, of course, washing it back over the sprouts. Guest guest
Hi, because I believe so strongly in the benefits of sprouting, I want to share. Here in SoCal, I speak at Garden Clubs on the benefits and how to. My suggestion with the FreshLife is to put a tablespoon of seed in each section and work up from there. I good way to id the sprout is to put a different color paper clip on the ridges. Then write done what that color is. To help me to id the sections I say, " Right is right. " So right of the red is alfalfa and right of the blue is clover, etc. With pea shoots and sunflower, I put in a lot of seeds because they don't seem to mind crowding each other, and you can put out handfulls of sprouts to eat leaving room for the slower growers. Try that with the radish. ew Re: Freshlife arrived Date: Sat, 13 Sep 2008 11:11:14 -0700 Hi ew Thanks for the water info. Guest guest
I do not use proxide in my FreshLife. If you buy organically grown seeds there is no need for it. However, I do buy mung beans from the local Asian Mkt. because they are only 79 cents a pound, vs. $6.95 and shipping from seed suppliers. With these mung beans (you don't know where they've been), I put them in quart jar, cover with water and add one capful of peroxide and let soak overnight. Then I rinse very well and place into the machine and go from there.ew Re: Re: Freshlife arrived Date: Sat, 13 Sep 2008 15:42:44 -0400 Yes! Guest guest
Thank you Ernest for your most helpful information. Starting with 1 Tablespoon of seeds sound much better than filling the tray. I use masking tape on the outside of the tubs to label each seed with the starting date. This keeps me from getting to impatient! We do buy the organic seeds from Sproutpeople, so I will not use Peroxide. This may stop the excessive foaming. I think I will run some diluted 3% peroxide thru the machine between batches though. Leaving the lid and top tray off after the first few days sounds good, except, as you said for mung beans. This will allow more air circulation and perhaps reduce any chance of mold. Thank you again, Ernest for your help. It is so valuable to all of us. Guest guest
If I remember correctly, that post of mine was referring to using peroxide in the water. It was suggested by folks here, as well as in the Freshlife materials. So I tried it. Once. Never again. The proxide was stripping color from the shells, then rinsing ( & therefore feeding) the sprouts with the nasty dark water. The sprouts also has a fizzy taste; like peroxide! Guest guest
Just a note about peroxide and the Freshlife. The only time I use peroxide in the Freshlife is when I am cleaning it. Every month I pour in the 3% you get from the store and some distilled water and let it run overnight. It seems to freshen up the machine which is used 24/7/365. Well, almost. I am taking a break because my batches were not turning out. Just way to hot in the apt to grow anything but peas and lentils. I don't believe that the seeds from Sproutpeople. com need to be treated with peroxide. Happy Sprouting, Diane
