Guest guest
Hello Betty, Minnesota is such a beautiful state. I have been sprouting for a long time and use my sprouts in nearly everything. On a sandwich, I use sprouts instead of lettuce, Lettuce has no real food value. I eat sunflower sprouts as snacks. I use mung sprouts in stir fry, in a Sat. morning omelet, and in salads as well as other sprouts in the salad. About once a week my wife makes grilled cheese sandwiches and always includes sprouts. I don't generally cook sprouts except mung beans. Sprouts are in my diet at most every meal and between meals. Try sprouting lintels. They are a great crunchy snack. I'm just remembering the last time I was fishing in Minnesota. Great fun! ew New to sprouting Date: Wed, 04 Jun 2008 07:35:53 -0000 My name is Betty. I live in Minnesota with my two cats. This spring I decided to start trying to produce year round a good share of the food I eat. I want to use a combnation of squarefoot gardening, container gardening and sprouting. I recently go an EasySprout and some mung bean seeds and some alfalfa seeds. I grew a batch of alfalfa sprouts and have eaten them. I have not grown the mung beans yet. I am wondering if those of you who use a lot of spouts, both volumne wise and variety wise would share a little about what type of dishes you use your sprouts. I am more interest in menu now rather than recipes at this time. Sunshine makes the flowers dance. Guest guest
Hello Betty, Like Ernest I use mine in ways that would commonly be thought of as uses for lettuce. Sandwiches, wraps, salads, and such. I also have a blended breakfast, with fruits and various sprouts; tastes much like a milkshake. I haven't tried it yet, but am looking forward to growing barley and wheat grass. :~) Thia On Wed, Jun 4, 2008 at 3:35 AM, Betty <bbor1212frugal@...> wrote: > <snip> > I am wondering if those of you who use a lot of spouts, both volumne > wise and variety wise would share a little about what type of dishes > you use your sprouts. Guest guest
It is always important to define your terms. " Food value " strictly defined equals energy, equals calories. So food value only includes carbohydrates, fats and proteins. Therefore much of what we eat as sprouters has little food value and at the same time much nutrition. Food with much food value is what is making america fat. I do realize how crazy this all sounds, I just want you to understand what it means when people say these things. And when your eating your healthy, low calorie sprout foods if someone says it has no real food value, you should hand him a bucket of lard and a spoon and say " You want food value, chow down. Guest guest
You may want to look at the Nutrition Data site. The following is snipped form there, about iceberg lettuce: " The good: This food is low in Sodium, and very low in Saturated Fat and Cholesterol. It is also a good source of Thiamin, Vitamin B6, Iron and Potassium, and a very good source of Dietary Fiber, Vitamin A, Vitamin C, Vitamin K, Folate and Manganese. " The charts so a whopping 22% DV of vitamin K! (Almost double that of alfalfa sprouts.) http://www.nutritiondata.com/facts/vegetables-and-vegetable-products/2476/2 :~) Thia On Thu, Jun 26, 2008 at 5:42 AM, <WanaBFIRM@...> wrote: > In a message dated 6/4/2008 7:26:32 AM Central Daylight Time, > 99tomatoes@... <99tomatoes%40gardener.com> writes: > > > ....Lettuce has no real food value..... > > > Actually, that's only true of iceberg lettuce (unless it has some > nutrient we haven't discovered yet). All those great, colorful charts, etc and so much info! I could get lost (having fun) there. I guess I was just passing on the misinformation that I had heard all my life - that Romaine, etc are good and that Iceberg lettuce is useless. I should know not to trust most mainstream info anyway. ************** Gas prices getting you down? Search AOL Autos for fuel-efficient used cars. Guest guest
I don't know any Willinghams in Michigan, but would love to talk to them. With four in your family, an Easy Sprout would work great for you. As your needs get larger, you could move up to an automatic machine. Let me know and I can tell you where the best price is. Don't forget the good ol' one quart jar. Nearly everyone starts with one. ew Re: new to sprouting Date: Sun, 13 Jul 2008 22:53:29 -0000 Thanks Ernest, I have 4 in my family .
