If they have roots, eat them. In my experience, they are good from when the roots start to show until they have green leaves but I usually have eaten them all before they get that far gone. Taste your sprouts every day. Then you will know from personal experience when they taste the best to you. Sparrow
Guest guest
Here are some questions that will help us figure it out. What machine are you using. Are you changing the water daily? Are you sure that they molded and not that you're looking at little hair roots. Sprouts will usually wilt before they mold. I've used FreshLife for three years now and never had anything get moldy. Lentils don't need to be done in a machine. I do mine in a colander in the bathtub. Soak the seed. Dump them in a colander. Cover loosely with a cloth and rinse twice a day. Lentils are ready the second day after you see roots. Usually day four. ew first sprouting results Date: Fri, 21 Nov 2008 04:16:47 -0000 i started sprouting using the automatic sprouter. first i did mung beans, but could not eat them because they were too bitter. you people told me to eat it younger, and keep dark. thanks. Then i did alfalfa, and it molded in the sprouter. then i did amaranth, and it molded. then i did sesame, and it may be ok, but does not look good. then i did lentils, and so far they look ok, but how long until i eat it? maybe im doing something wrong. thanks. Guest guest
Thanks EW! EasyGreen automatic sprouter. yes, changing water daily. it does not recycle water. each day add a gallon of good water, and drain out from catch pail the used water. no question about mold with some. the amaranth has black spots in the root area. smell gives it away with some. it tends to be discouraging because with my severe health problems I had hoped to make sprouts a major part of my diet. And i do not know how to eat them except putting them through my Vita Mix to cream them, because I have so few teeth (due to mercury poisoning). Guest guest
At least two kinds of mold: one black, the other cream colored and a slimy mass by the roots. I am giving up on sprouting for now. I have not yet found a single one that sprouts properly and that I can eat and enjoy. all I can do is cream the raw slimy sprouts in my vita mix and eat raw somehow (gag it down slowly). So much for a raw food diet. The best ones sprouting were lentils, but they do not taste very good raw anyway. Besides that, in about 2 weeks i will be hospitalized for between 4-12 weeks in a hospital 1000 miles from home. That is, if they do not find a brain tumour first. And I spent most of October in 3 different hospitals far from home, and was released from another one yesterday. I had hoped that raw sprouts would be part of the answer to my health problems. But some people are just too far gone to help. But thanks anyway. > > > > Here are some questions that will help us figure it out. What > machine > > are you using. Are you changing the water daily? If your system can tolerate fruit, try filling the blender loosely with a dark green like kale (remove the stems) or spinach (the stems are okay) and then add 2 or 3 bananas and about two cups of water and blend until it's a smooth green drink. If you can't handle high sweets like bananas, try making it with avocado instead. Some good greens to use include: celery, parsley, romaine lettuce, colalrd greens (remove the stem) Any kind of fruit is good to use. If you go with avocado instead, consider adding " non-sweet fruits " like tomato and cucumber to make a " blended salad. " Sparrow
Guest guest
Hi... I am sorry to hear about your serious health problems.. you know I don't think that sprouts unto themselves is a panacea or a be all and the end of all.. I don't think that their might be any answer to what you are describing... but a comprehensive regimen of good foods.. non processed foods could not be a bad thing... I think if you had a diet based on germinated brown rice and other germinated/sprouted grains that it would not be bad for you... I think it you added a good source of oils like deep sea fish oils or if you are a vegetarian you could substitute borage flax or hemp oil... I think you you drank lots of good water between meals and maybe if you included kefir made from a kefir grain and or home made kombucha ... I think you might at least feel better than you would had you not made these changes in your diet,, I think if you cut way down on meat and sugars it would also make you feel better... the thing that is good about kefir that you make at home is that it frees up your immune system from being so active in your large intestines... this gives the immune system a chance to do other things ... kombucha also relieves stresses on the body and this give the body a chance to heal.. and you may just feel a lot better.. I'm not saying that this is a cure... I am saying that these changes in your diet may give your body a chance to heal and you may feel somewhat better if you used these methods... you can email me if you want more on this subject.. thanks mike From: Schverzhjedzova <ahoovahyah@...> Subject: Re: first sprouting results Date: Sunday, November 23, 2008, 3:56 PM At least two kinds of mold: one black, the other cream colored and a slimy mass by the roots. Guest guest
I don't know about the food combining issue, but I've been enjoying green drinks for a month now. I don't like kale very much, but having them in green smoothies with a frozen banana or a pear or an apple or some frozen berries (for instance) makes it very tasty. Peach is awesome. You can combine fruits, too. The fruit is to make the drink palatable, I think, as the greens alone would probably be very strong. Plus you do get an extra fruit into your diet. I've tried several greens with the same result--when you add some fruit (especially frozen) the whole thing is quite tasty! Even carrot tops! (BTW, you have to strip off all the stems before blending those!) I found collard greens very strong, but was even able to drink that. You don't have to use fruit, by the way. Sometimes I use some red onion, garlic, dillweed, dried tomatoes, etc. to make a savoury green smoothie. YUMMY! Guest guest
How do you do " sprout soaks " ? I'd like to try the sunflower and sesame seed smoothie. It sounds good. Is it expensive? Got a recipe?? I sometimes make almond milk, and have been thinking of using it as a base for a green smoothie--except that I'm not (yet?) a raw foodie so I already get plenty of fat and protein. ANNA--try that! Make nice thick almond milk for the food value! You can run it through a sieve or a nut milk bag so you don't have to deal with the leftover bits. And you can dry the leftover bits, then run them through the vitamix to make a fine powder. Other nuts would work, too. I had been thinking of trying the mung been sprouts and the alfalfa sprouts in a green smoothie, but my instincts were that they would be too strong. Good to know someone has already tested out the theory so I don't have to. Guest guest
Just as with any food, it's all up to personal taste. I enjoy both alfalfa, and mung, in my smoothies. Actually, it's the only way I like mung! When making a smoothie, I also use fruit. But I do prefer green juices over green smoothies. With those, I add only carrot, or golden beet, to the greens. :~) Thia On Mon, Nov 24, 2008 at 12:50 PM, Connie Lacelle < groups@...> wrote: > I had been thinking of trying the mung been sprouts and the alfalfa > sprouts in a green smoothie, but my instincts were that they would be > too strong. For your information, I am also allergic to almond, filbert, sunflower, sesame, soy, corn, oat, sugars, honey, all caffeine, coffee, egg, milk proteins (not just the milk sugars), goat milk, garlic, and much much more. when i used to buy milk that worked for me, it was flax seed milk, which is very expensive. what i thought might work is sprouting rye, then juicing the green part in a wheatgrass juicer (one that is very easy to clean, so I do not end up on the floor while trying to clean it). i will need to buy one. any suggestions? (rye has been found to be a bit healthier for me in particular than wheat, although wheat is ok.) i saw the neurologist today, and they will be doing a bunch of brain tests on me. if all goes well there within the next couple of weeks, i will be leaving for a stay of 1-3 months in a hospital far away from home. thank you very much for your help and kind suggestions! >> I am > giving up on sprouting for now.> I have not yet found a single one > that sprouts properly and that I> can eat and enjoy. all I can do is > cream the raw slimy sprouts in my> vita mix and eat raw somehow (gag > it down slowly). Greens are a different class and can combine with either fruits or vegetables. > Banannas and Kale - sounds yuk. Is there some reason you mix > these two together. You taste mostly banana (or other fruit) in a green fruit smoothie. You mix these two together because it is a veyr eay way to get lots of greens in your diet. Chimpanzees in the wild frequently pick greens and wrap them around pieces of fruit and eat them like a " sandwich " so it is a very common practice among higher primates to combine greens and fruit and a very healthy, natural way to get lots of vitamins and minerals in the diet. For taste sake and also some hygienists believe that fruit is one of the most optimal human foods so for that school of thought it is also a nutrition makeover as well. (Fruit is a highly argued-over food in the raw world, though, so some say fruit green smoothies are great for you while others say it will be your downfall. Each must judge for herself/himself.)
