Guest guest
Okay!!! here's a new one for you. I've been sprouting the oganic GREEN lentils with no problem. The other day I purchased a bag of pink ones. Organic, as I usually buy this kind. I did the same process. Only a handful sprouted. The rest just stayed little pink lentils. Even after 4 days. And this morning, when I went to the bowl, I smelled them, and i said " uh oh, they smell funny " . They didn't smell CLEAN, like all my others did. I promptly threw them out. Now I have two questions. How come they didn't sprout like the green ones, and do you think they were a bad batch (the smell). I rinsed and drained them very carefully like I do ALL of my seeds and stuff but this time, well, I have no idea what I did. I'm thinking of taking the rest of the bag of pink lentils and going back to the Organic store and trying t get my $3.50 back. What do you think? Thanks much. Guest guest
Melody, just because they were organic doesn't mean that they were meant to be sprouted. Maybe they were meant for soup. ew My pink lentils didn't sprout. What did I do wrong?? Date: Sun, 14 Dec 2008 17:14:59 -0000 Okay!!! here's a new one for you. Guest guest
Melody did you buy lentils that are specifically sold for sprouting? If not, it may be that some sprouted by luck, but the rest is not good for that, so of course after days in water they went bad since they are dead - so to speak and... if they do not sprout , can you not cook them and eat them , since they are organic. red lentils are so delicious as a soup with miso. I do not know, but I am not sure it is worth the gasoline to return such a small amount, unless you go there a lot anyway. I have found that some seeds are easier than others. I am very successful with some and not at all with others and just Ok with others. Lentils have been in the OK category, but they are specifically sproutable So I have pounds of stuff like buckweat that does not work too well, popcorn that is a pain, 5 shoots out of 2 table spoons. on the other hand broccoli and cabbage are fabulous and so is snow pea . good luck with it Brigitte > > Okay!!! here's a new one for you. Guest guest
Where did you buy these red lentils? The pink lentils that I buy in my local health food store do not sprout either. I think that the pink ones are often decorticated (hulls removed) and then they won't sprout. Make sure that you get whole lentils. Sprout seed distributors sell many different kinds of lentils. Check Sproutpeople, Sprouthouse, Jaffe Bros., Sun Organic for more choices. Lee On Dec 14, 2008, at 12:14 PM, melodylubart1 wrote: > Okay!!! here's a new one for you. Guest guest
Hi All: I feel like a complete fool. I never knew that certain lentils could be sprouted and certain could not. My green ones ALWAYS sprout just fine. These were not soaking in water for days. Just over night (just like I did the green ones). I can walk to the place I bought them from. I phoned the man. but now that I know that some can be sprouted and some can't, well, how do I know the difference? Thanks to all who responded. You're all so nice. Guest guest
Hi Melody, The brown and red lentils I sprout are just food lentils, not special sprouting lentils. I find that the red ones are a little trickier to sprout. I soak them about half as long as the brown and have to be extra careful to drain the red ones super duper well. The brown ones are much more forgiving (and I think the brown sprouts taste better so I end up cooking the red lentils more often than sprouting them. But mine do sprout - they just take a lot more attention.) Hope this is helpful if you decide to try again on your red lentils before giving up on them. Guest guest
Hi, does i indicate anywhere on the package that a certain color can be sprouted. I never did the brown ones. Only the green ones. I didn't do the red ones either. I bought the pink ones. Thanks much if you know the answer. Melody Re: Re: My pink lentils didn't sprout. What did I do wrong?? Melody I've never even heard of pink lentils before - I assumed you were talking about red lentils since they're such a light color of red. Any lentil *should* be sproutable as they're plants and grow from the ground but someone else said something about some kinds of lentils being cut into pieces in some way for food purposes and any seed that's been cut up is no longer viable so that sounds like it might be the issue you're up against. Another possibility is that they are steamed in some way before being sold -- that's why regular store-bought oat groats won't sprout; they're steamed to keep them from going rancid on the shelf and steamed seeds won't sprout. Aha! yes, this page says that pink lentils, also called masoor dal, are skinned and split: http://www.foodsubs.com/Lentils.html That's why they don't sprout. The other poster was spot on. Guest guest
Wow, I clicked on the link AND LEARNED A LOT ABOUT LENTILS. Never knew this. thank you very much for the information. I bought the lentils back to the store and they gave me a credit. I bought the green ones instead. Also, this is an organic food store. They sell Tofu but not Tempeh. Anyone know where I can buy Tempeh?? Thanks much. Melody Re: Re: My pink lentils didn't sprout. What did I do wrong??
