Jumping Frogs

Physiologist ph Erlanger's research on the nervous tissue of

frogs led to an increased knowledge of the nature of nerve

impulses. This and other experiments would lead to his winning a

Nobel Prize in physiology or medicine in 1944. While working at

the s Hopkins University School of Medicine, he invented the

sphygmomanometer to measure blood pressure and conducted studies

of how the sounds involved in the measurement of blood pressure

are produced. Together with Herbert S. Gasser - who shared the

Nobel Prize with him - Erlanger experimented on the nerve tissues

of frogs. They determined the configuration of the impulse,

measured its strength and duration, and learned that different

kinds of nerve fibers exhibit various transmission

characteristics. Erlanger was born on this date in 1874 and died

in 1965.

Hopkins: Researchers Identify Liver Toxicity Risk Of AIDS Drugs

BALTIMORE (s Hopkins) — Ten percent of HIV-infected

individuals taking antiretroviral drugs experience liver toxicity

at a level high enough to warrant stopping treatment, according

to new findings by s Hopkins researchers. Results of the

study, in the Jan. 5 issue of the Journal of the American

Medical Association, also showed that liver toxicity was five

times higher with taking one particular protease inhibitor,

ritonavir, which accounted for half of all cases in the study.

Hopkins: Side Effects Of Prostate Cancer Surgery Far Less When Performed By

Specialist

BALTIMORE (s Hopkins) — Many men with prostate cancer may

endanger their lives by avoiding prostate removal, unwilling to

reported in the January issue of Urology, s Hopkins

researchers conclude that when patients seek out a surgeon highly

experienced in the procedure, they are far more likely to remain

continent and potent than if their operations were done by a less

experienced doctor. In addition, the study's potency and

continency rates are the highest ever reported after prostate

Hopkins: Ameliorating The Effects Of Poverty

_______________________________________________________

January 5, 2000

BALTIMORE (s Hopkins) - Poor people can't afford the decent

health care that most Americans take for granted. That lack of

access puts them at higher risk for many kinds of problems,

including vascular diseases, neonatal mortality and shorter life

expectancy. Now, s Hopkins researchers have found that the

simple step of providing the poor with a primary care physician

can make a big difference.

Their study concluded that a doctor who has the chance to

establish a long-term relationship with a patient, to really know

his or her medical history, can help shield that patient from

some of the adverse health effects of poverty.

" Most things that come to physicians are relatively undefined,

not clear diagnosis. And it takes knowing a person very

frequently, in order to know what to do, to be more efficient and

more effective in diagnosing a problem, " says study lead author

Dr. Barbara Starfield.

But there is a shortage of primary care doctors in this country.

Dr. Starfield says government policymakers ought to give much

thought to how to address that deficit.
