-- German Shepherd UTI

I know we have dog owners in the group and would like to ask for advice (I have tried searching the group archives and find nothing on canine UTI's)Anyway, new German Shepherd pup, born 9/11/10, we've had her since the week of Halloween. She came to us at approx. 6 weeks with a UTI, I had her to the vet within a few days due to noticing that and to have her checked for any other issues not seen.Pup has had 2 UTI's so far, and has Struvyte (sp) crystals in her urine. Per a draw done the end of last week and a lab test, bladder urine is clear, but collected, passed urine contains blood, white cells and grows the crystals once spun in the lab, so the issue is in the uretha. I have had the pup on daily doses of probiotics and a cranberry concoction for weeks now. She's eating a raw diet supplemented with a dry organic natural dogfood.Other than this, the puppy is healthy, very active, and has gone from less than 10 pounds when we got her to 40 pounds. Based on the size of her mom and dad, she's probably going to top out in the neighborhood of 100-112 pounds.Any suggestions on what to do about the UTI issue?

No.  I have read that cat food is poisonous to a dog's system, but

what about the poop?  Any dog I have ever seen ate poop, but we keep

the yard picked up with this one.

UTI-in a dog, can be due to bladder stones, it is a very serious condition. Are you feeding the dog dry food? You could try changing the food, use a better food or give the dog fresh meat. Just no cheap dry food or organ meats. Any food that causes adverse reactions should be discontinued. Change slowly, tho', so you can pinpoint the problem.

Cat food is too 'hot' for dogs, they get hot spots and digestive troubles, from it, and eating poop is a form of pica. My dogs do not eat poop. My dh feeds them all wrong, but I can't do much about it, the little baggers are so terribly spoiled.

Thanks, Suzi, this looks like good info and I am looking for natural

ways, herbs, etc., to treat the pup. I've got her on a cranberry

mix now and she has been for a few weeks, I'd like to add something

else natural that I know to be tried and true, before the vet

convinces my daughter to take the dog to a specialist, which is the

way the conversation is going at this time. Maybe a dog owner will

weigh in yet :-)

Thanks again,

Aha. I have a Miniature Pincher that has the most terrible itchys. I foster cats and more so over summer / Kitten season. He has big bald spots on him at the mo from itching. All the vet will say is flea allergy. Not sure that I believe that is the only thing causing this. He is the most disgusting scavenger. he is like a labrador and eats only slightly less and at 4.5 kg not a great thing. lol. He will eat cat food before and "after". this could well be his issue.

Well, I have GSDs, but I’ve never dealt with UTIs in them, so I didn’t have anything to say.

I do, however, feed raw, I am a member of the NaturalRawDog list, and that group includes some extremely savvy folks. If you were to join that list and post your question there, I’d recommend that you specifically ask for Casey in the subject line. She’s incredibly knowledgeable.

Dogs are designed to eat raw meat- lol mostly rotten..... Mine will not eat raw, but started early it's good to feed them at least 30% per day.

Also....Dog food has too much ash for cats, it will give them UTIs, whole, raw foods are really best for both.

Okay, good deal.

I know if you don’t find good info in the archives, there are folks who’ll have some experience with the problem. Sorry I can’t be more help myself, but at least I know the right list to point you to!! (...and somewhere, an English teacher’s head just exploded. so sorry...)

My own dogs don’t seem to care much about my cats’ poop, but then, they are also raw-fed. However, they know all the places along our morning walk to seek and find everyone else’s cats’ poo, and they hunt it out with a vengeance. I stop them when possible, but if I get involved in a talk with my husband while we’re walking, and quit paying attention...

Ev"A hundred million miracles are happening every day!"

My Corgi only ate cat poo and then it was only when he was off leash on a portion of our walk. We called it "kitty roca". Luckily we didn't have a cat of our own!
