Okay, I can cook the black turtle beans. What about the sprouted green peas and

the sprouted green lentils. Can I put these in my salad (just they way they

are??

I put some beans in my salad today, and I'm just fine. A bit gassy though!! lol

I don't see anything wrong with eating sprouts everyday, if you feel

good and healthy keep doing so. I don't think the black turtle beans

should be eaten raw. The Sproutpeople website says to cook them.

I have no idea what that means about waiting until the alfalfa

flowers before eating. Could you provide a link? I'm thinking that

farmers might wait until a certain percent of the plant is in flower

before they cut it for hay. You can eat the sprouts after 3 or 5 or 7

or 10 days. Whatever you want.

Plants protect their seeds from being eaten by producing toxins.

These are not deadly, they may give an upset stomach. Both soaking

and sprouting help remove the toxins from the seeds. But the larger

beans should be cooked.

I found some pictures of alfalfa flowers and seed pods.

Yes, I've also read that Red Kidney beans and Cannellini beans should not be

eaten raw. They contain some sort of a toxin that can make you quite sick

(they are fine cooked though). But other sprouts? Eat away! They are very

good for you.

Okay, here's a good question. Why are they better for you if you cook them. And

I read where, if you cook them, the temp of the water should be about 115

degrees?

What happens when you cook these sprouted beans? Why does cooking them make them

less gassy? Especially if they've been soaked. This is quite confusing to me.

I'm not going to eat any more of the raw turtle bean sprouts. I'll do the stir

fry thing.

I'm just trying to learn.

Thanks much.

Beans do have baggage and lectin or hemagglutinin can cause minor to severe

problems depending on the health and sensitivity of the individual.Large beans

should be cooked to remove this unwanted dissruptor of blood flow.

What Jeff said. And also, when cooking beans that need to be cooked,

please bring them up to boiling for at least ten minutes during the

cooking time to be sure the lectins are destroyed. I have a friend

who, quite literally, thought he was dying for about 24 hours as a

result of eating beans he'd cooked in a crock pot that were still

chock full of lectins. He described the result as being far worse than

regular food poisoning.

Melody: the bit about 115 degrees applies to the raw food diet -- it

is the general temperature range where enzymes begin to be destroyed

and proteins begin to clump together, etc. But some beans, like pinto

and kidney beans, for example, cannot be eaten raw and the 115 rule

doesn't apply to them -- if you are going to eat them, you must cook

them thoroughly.

I cut the sprout off of the seed and just eat it. Then I throw the seed

and its root into the soup pot.

Well, obviously, I'm not buying any pinto or kidney beans. I don't want to start

cooking beans. I just want an easy dinner. So I'll use whatever lentils, peas

and turtle beans I have. Regarding turtle beans, do I have to boil these (after

they sprouted)? or can I just toss them into the frying pan for a quick stir

fry. I did this, and I'm just fine.

I want to say fine. lol

I rinse thoroughly. Run them in a salad spinner to get them as dry as I

can. Then I wrap them in a clean white tea towel for about one hour. Then

into the fridge.

I soak beans for about 12 hours. Then sprout for four days, but beans

don't go in the fridge. They go directly into the soup pot. I plan ahead

for when I want bean soup or chili and start them then.

I live in New York City. This morning I left my house to go to my local cafe

where I have my morning breakfast. We all sit around and socialize. I have the

time of my life. And the coffee is freshly ground and they give it to you for

free when you buy a breakfast sandwich of two fresh egg whites on a roll.

So I make my own delicous cup of coffee, go over and get my sandwich and the

whole thing cost me a whopping $2.20 cents. I do this several times a week. I

don't indulge otherwise.

So we are sitting around and I happened to look out the big window and I said

" oh my god, we are having a blizzard " . Well, we all just sat there enjoying our

breakfast, and continued talking. I believe in letting the world do what it will

do, and sitting and having coffee with good people, well to me, it's a

privilige.

Should have done this a long time ago.

I only wish they sold organic seeds. lol
