mouth sores and stress

For a few years I have been getting mouth sores that are very painful. Many suggestions have come from friends and the internet but since the ideas of citrus and other acid foods do not apply, my doctor said it's probably stress related so, for the past many months, I have been keeping track of when I get them. The two that just developed in the last few days followed my finding a lump in my breast, going to the doc where he found two more and now I'm waiting until my mamagram on Sept 8. In the mean time, my mouth is very sore so, my question is a compound one--I'm using Ambesol for kill some of the pain which lasts just about as long as it takes to toss the used Q-tip in the trash. Is there something I can use that would last at least an hour? What herb will help to calm my nerves that I can take or make a tea out of?

How can I keep from getting these blasted sores in the first place? I assure you, I don't eat or drink much in the way of acidic anything and when I did, I never had one sore until I got stressed out.

What is a weed? A plant whose virtues have not yet been discovered.

I used to use alum which will take the pain completely away until you work at it with your tongue too much, Alum is aluminum and tastes terrible like super lemon juice, but it is a cure for canker sores I used to get them a lot, but not anymore; not for many years, I do not know why. Dab a Q-tip with water then a tiny bit of alum, then push it hard against the sore to completely cauterize it, and voilá. But it is Aluminum.
